Nathan Ablett officially quits

Was just thinking, did Nathan walk out on the club before or after the draft? Because if it was after, Wells must've known something by picking a 21yo. ready made KPP in Harry Taylor with the first draft pick. Will be interesting to see if there are any plans to play Harry in the forwardline at any stage next year.

After;)
Balmy's on 3AW in a couple of minutes.

my thoughts are harsh i agree but the club has given nathan ablett plenty and right now it was his time to repay them, so instead he quits what that shows me is that he has nothing for the club. As for other opportunities Tomcat is twice the player nathan is and he is a young blok who loves the club, however it would have been better to have both togeether with mooney down there

How exactly does he go about re-paying the club some would say he has helped the club achieve something they weren't able to do the previous 44years

Or by re-pay do you mean he should have just kept playing footy even though he wasn't enjoying it until he slipped into depression then he could really help the club out.

nathan ablett has shown his true colours and that i that he couldnt givee a shit about anybody but himself. just like his old man the only ablett that cares about geelong is his brother

Doesnt bother me, he helped us deliver a flag whilst waiting for the Tommahawk to develop, and lets face it most of us felt Hawkins would end up taking Nablett's spot, just means it has happened sooner then expected.

But after what Nablett has done for the club, ill welcome him back with open arms.

im a little dissapointed to lose Nathan.. but i saw in the news that he isnt 100% commited to AFL and the game (and tom harley and bomber both said there is no point nath being in te team if he isnt commited).. Tom Harley looked upset.

Thanks Nath for being a great player and premeirship player :thumbsu:

YEP totally agree, what an absolute disgrace. Fair enough I understand he cant handle the training and all the commitment that AFL players have to put in, but his comments today were that he is just happy to train once a week and turn up of Saturday and play VFL.
Why should he have that privalege when all the other aspiring VFL players are putting in a minimum 3 nights a week and getting a 10th of what he was on last year.
Piss him off totally and stick with the blokes who want to do the hard yards and not get a free ride off his olds mans name. Lets all be honest he only got a gig at Geelong because off his last name.

 :(Oh go away. The boy doesnt want to play AFL anymore, was pressured into it majorly in the first place, so he gets abused for not wanting to stay and go through the motions?

Sure, his pedigree helped, but the fact is that he's a talented footballer.

Look, we all know he's very close to his dad, and the Great Man did the same thing in his early 20s, although instead of sitting it out he went bush to play footy with his mates.

Give him some time away and if he misses the game and wants to come back, then great. If not, then it's a great waste of a talent but ultimately I think all any Cat fan would want is to see Nathan and the Ablett family happy and content, given what they've contributed to the club.

Kudos to him for caring enough about his teammates to know he wouldn't have been fully switched on for the season ahead, but all is not lost in terms of forward line options - Tomahawk, Varcoe, Djekurra, Lonners, Prismall, not to mention the draftees and VFL youngsters.

And just think, at least we're not having to discuss playing Henry Playfair in a key forward position. :p

Have to agree. I think Hawkins would be a better bet in the forwardline anyway, as he actually wants to be there. I would hate to be the guy who is busting a gut in the VFL and gets a tap on the shoulder if Nathan wants a game later in the season.

Congrats... you've taken a early lead in the annual "phukhead of the year " award.

Re: Cats call press conference (Possible Nathan Ablett Decision)

Wouldn't ablett's contract become void considering he walked out with a year to go.

Wish i had a job i could go to where i could quit for a year and still get paid.

You and me both. I think we're in the wrong industry Rizzo.

Its a bit sad,but all the best to him, you just never know he could come back. Well it just opens the door for TommaHawk, and guys like Taylor & Lonergan a go.
All the best NAB

It goes both ways at the end of a season every AFL club delivers crushing news and tosses out players that are deemed to be surplus to requirements. The AFL is like any other business, Nabblett doesn't owe anybody anything just like Geelong doesn't owe anything to the players it delists every season, those are the cold hard facts of life.

Re: Cats call press conference (Possible Nathan Ablett Decision)

If we renegotiate the contract it means less salary cap pressure. I dunno how voiding a contract would affect the cap, id expect that it would still apply in full.

That being said I fully support nathan's decision. I dont think we should be criticising the effort he has shown as a Cat. Its pretty poor form. You criticise him if he doesnt want to play and then you criticise him if you dont think he is playing hard enough.

And to those he dont think he was that skilled, just go back and have a look at some of the knock on, pick ups, somersaults that he did at 190cm+

Thanks for being a part of our premiership team Nath.

All these comments that Nathan was just keeping Tom's spot warm is rubbish. They are different players in many ways - athleticism, playing style for starters. Ideally, we'd have both playing in the forward line with Nathan probaly at CHF and Tom leading out from the square. Add Mooney to the mix along with Norm, Chappy, Stokesy and others and it was a prospect that had many of us salivating over.

Looks like we'll have to wait at least another year for it to eventuate.

Agree Catman , they are totally different players and it would have been great to see them both out there together. The big problem now with Nathan is if we did have to wait for a comeback in years to come , how far back would he have fallen and the steps forward he has made over the past few seasons could well and truely have gone.

Although I do think it is a bit soft of nathan to chuck it in, it his decision in the end. I don't want him to play if he was only half hearted about it. So good on him for having the guts to be true to himself and not be swayed by what others want him to do. I only hope he doesn't live to regret his decision in years to come.

I just hope hes come back near the end of this yr and plays a bit of VFL. As your said Tony, not only will he of taken a few steps back but if he gives it all away (AFL & VFL) who knows what state he might come back in aswell (thats if he wants to come back).

Don't bother with him mate(thehoff)... good post, you are absolutely correct. There is a heap of young blokes willing to do whatever it takes training wise out there... Nath has a silver spoon up his arse. You can't blame him though... the clubs attitude on this has been terrible.. Near forcing someone to be a professional athlete??? WTF?

He will be missed more than people think. Was a very handy player, a major part of a three pronged forward line. Tommohawk can come in and may one day be better, but in a quest for back to back, NAB would be handy.
