Some of you guys just do not get it.
You don’t start with a list of positions you need to fill and just pick whatever neatly ticks that box, you scout by talent always. Thank god we don’t have Bigfooty posters running the place and picking whatevers ‘required’ inevitably glossing over future stars of the game.

Thankfully David Walls does get it and has knack for spotting out gems and does so every year in spite of Freo fans melting every year. Our drafting has been by far the best part of our operations for yonks now. Think we’ve got a couple more good ones this year too
Annnnnd here we have it, this year's gen-u-ine, all in, no holds barred, first anti-melt melt.

Well done!!

Geelong: "If you cowards don't bid on Brisbane kids we'll bloody well do it!"

Incredible how many people just do not understand this.

I think the best way to describe how the actual clubs look at it is to imagine you went back in time say, 10 or 12 years ago and were drafting for your list today, but from the 2013 or 2014 draft, but you knew how good (talented) each player has been in reality since that date.
You wouldn’t pick on needs. You’d just pick the best players one by one and skip over all the guys that turned out to be duds.
All listen managers try to project now, who are going to be those duds.

If Walls thinks there is a 60% chance that Charlie Nicholls makes it but he also thinks the best small forward left has only a 10% chance of making it long term at the level, he’s going to pick the 60% chance every single time. Even if we need a small forward more than a key forward in 2025.

Walls clearly thinks that Nicholl is going to be a superior AFL player than Alger or Boxshall or Clarke, or whoever else was touted on this board at this pick. Thats really all that matters in the end.

Sure, but it's probably not going to be 60% versus 10%. When you have a rankings list, each one is not going to be that far behind the previous one. It could be 60% versus 55%, and in that case there is an argument to take the 55% option if they better suit needs. Having said that, a KPF (with versatility to be a fast KPD) could be deemed a need with Jones going down and our fastest KPD Pearce approaching the end.
