Man poor Aiden Riddle, is a massive Freo fan and seems like a decent young ruck option and gets drafted to the team he loves to have the entire fan base be extremely angry about it lol

For the record yes this is clearly a balls up, Knobel had shown a bit, but I'm not sure it's enough of a balls up for this to be melt worthy

And in 12 months, the same people melting will be saying Riddle is projecting as better than Reidy too.

I'm gunna hazard a guess there would have been an equal amount of melts if Knobel had stayed and Riedy had gone from #TeamLiam.

I'm neither here nor there on the loss, I liked them both. I'm putting all my eggs in the "Swaggy keeps his body intact and plays a full season so we don't need to go to depth players" basket.

But that's me being very, VERY optimistic.

STRENGTHS:
  • Athleticism
  • Follow-up work
  • Handballing
  • Overhead marking
  • Ruck craft
  • Strength
IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Versatility
Riddle has been on clubs' radars for a while now, having played in four WAFL Colts games as a 16-year-old in 2022, before playing just two games in 2023. Returning this season as an over-ager, Riddle was able to put together 14 outstanding WAFL Colts performances and impress in the ruck for Western Australia.
Riddle excites scouts with his athleticism. For a 200cm ruckman, he moves well across the ground, getting involved in transition and proving unafraid to drive his legs and use the ball by hand or foot. He often roves his own ruckwork and delivers the ball inside 50 himself. He had several moments on the biggest stage at Optus Stadium on WAFL Grand Final day, where he showed off his agility by collecting the ball off the deck, weaving through traffic, stepping around much smaller opponents, and penetrating deep inside 50.
Riddle’s ruck craft is impressive, using smart bodywork to position himself well, then knocking down hitouts to the advantage of his midfield counterparts. As an over-ager, he is easily able to manipulate his opponents’ movements with his strength and tap the ball where he desires.
The 199cm ruckman has also demonstrated a unique dexterity with his handballing. He is skilful by hand, particularly in traffic and times his handballs well to put teammates in position to break away and go forward.
Riddle has also shown that he is able to take big pack marks right across the ground. He is a target coming out of defensive 50 as he can take contested marks to bail his side out of trouble, and at times has been able to take opposition ruckmen forward and take big marks inside 50.
He didn’t take his opponents forward as much as he probably could have, usually playing as the sole ruckman for the Tigers. In a matchup against fellow top Western Australian prospect Kayle Gerreyn, he went forward three times and thrice outmarked him in packs to kick three goals. It wasn’t enough on the day, and he didn’t show it enough over the course of the year, but this was a promising sign that at the next level Riddle may be able to develop some kind of forward presence as well.

Signing guys like Worner for that extra year too long is what leads to situations like this.
Worner is just another Stefan giro. Very similar player, same level.
Will 100% be delisted next September and back in state league the following season. He should have been let go this year. Got 3 seasons as an u19 draftee - it’s more than a fair shot at it for a non KPP.

The difference was our list was crap in 2018-20 period when we had Giro, but now we bat much deeper and list spots are at a premium.
We need to be more ruthless now. You don’t hand multi year deals to guys whose ceilings are the 30th best player on the list.

Have we ever done an "unwelcome to the club" post?
Genuinely feel bad for the kid, drafted to the club he supports and everyone is angry because they're more worried about Knobel.

Not exactly a warm welcome for a kid who's done nothing wrong.

Yeah but we still have Reidy. Who will still be first choice ruck for Peel. So the different circumstances that would lead to more league time for Knobel don’t really exist at the Dockers.
Agree. That's why i said we have probably done him a favour. It is more that, than a reflection on his ability.

I'm surprised at how much of a 180 this forum has taken on Reidy, while Darcy was injured people were begging the club to play Reidy, now all of a sudden he's useless?

He was fine in the two games he played.
Wanting him to play Reidy because playing Jackson as our #1 ruck creates multiple problems. A totally cooked Taberner coming into the side for example. Better to adjust to a losing ruck than to create a losing forward line.

It’s embarrassing and amateur list management.
Forget the player involved.
Thats not the point. It’s just really poor stuff from our LM team.

Also I’d confidently say you have probably watched a sum total of 5 mins of Knobel playing in his career so far so you have no idea whether he’ll make it or not, and shouldnt be stating with such confidence that he’s not a long term AFL player. He hasn’t even players a game yet at the level and you’ve written him off!
I’ve seen plenty of Knobel - predominantly league but a couple of reserves as well. I don’t get to training just watch WAFL.

There were some comments about him getting lost around the ground and that is spot on. In the forward line - he played some minutes forward at reserves just had zero idea when to lead. Very promising in the centre clearance ruck taps though.

As Walls has been quoted as saying now that they knew this was a possibility. He also said last night “IF” Knobel is available. They could have even last night added him at last pick 63 and selected Carr as a rookie. BUT they didn’t.

In saying that Knobel was at training this morning so the selection was somewhat a surprise but I guess they could hardly say don’t come tomorrow as we don’t know whether you’ll be on our list. Gold Coast have pulled a swifty but club delisted him in the knowledge that there was every possibility he get selected in ND or RD. If they really wanted to avoid this then McDonald would have been the better delisting choice.

And in 12 months, the same people melting will be saying Riddle is projecting as better than Reidy too.
That's not hard.

We aren't melting about Riddle, we are melting we lost knobel and 2 years of development.

If he isn't projecting better than Reidy in a year then we will be in strife for our backup ruck department.

Cmon, nobody is wishing Riddle anything but a 200 game career in purple.

Reidy is out of contract end of next year off a one year deal. It's ok to accept that ideally we keep the more developed prospect this off season knowing the risk that we need some decent coverage as of round 1 2026.

We've just done the same thing with Banfield

2 years with a trigger for a 3rd

Gonna come back and bite us

I'm disappointed we lost 2 years of development into Knobel, but I think there is some serious questions about the type of ruckman Knobel is for the modern game. He projects like a Ned Reeves to me

The modern day ruck's are either 1) Incredibly strong or 2) A great runner with mobility, or ideally both. I don't think Knobel is either. Geelong just drafted an athletic freak ruckman over the number 1 rated ruck in this draft (his teammate), after investing pretty heavily in both Toby Conway and Mitch Edwards as both tall, lumbering ruckman

If we rated him highly we never would have delisted him and risked it. Always thought it was strange he didn't get game time with Reidy at Peel as a ruck/forward rotation. Because forward minutes would be useful for both Reidy and Knobel's development
Yeah the game has changed. There is room for both types still, but we already have one signed up long term and an adequate reserve. Freo want rucks that can go forward. Riddle is a good mark and very agile and skillful by the looks.

Would’ve Max still been training with us? Makes for an awkward situation walking off the track today and checking his phone lol

Losing Knobel isn't the reason for the melt, it's losing a player that the list management team wanted to keep that's the problem. The list management team committed to picking him up in the rookie draft, because they wanted to keep him, but they miscalculated and now they don't have the player they want. This then asks the question of where else have they miscalculated? Did they accept the pick downgrade in the Bolton deal because they thought Allan or Berry would still be there? Etc.

A lot of people on here said trying to send Knobel to the rookie draft was a bad idea because of this risk. Other players looked liked much better candidates. McDonald is old, injury prone, already a free agent, not that good, and now behind Draper. Hawks just sent Gunston to the rookie draft, we could've done the same to Walters.

****ing Dickheads

Lloyd Meek level dumbassery 2.0

Had to **** Reidy off and put him on the main list …. stupid campaigners

Starting to get hot for a full clean out at the top again

Sacking Longmuir and Walls over losing Max Knobel would certainly be a decision, that's for sure

This is my main gripe too, in recent years we’ve given out unnecessary overly long contracts to players who are either unproven and/or were in no danger of leaving.

I understand front-loading contracts to lock in young guns long term but we’ve gone OTT. Murphy is contracted until 2026 and hasn’t even played a game yet. Simpson has only played 2 games and is contracted until 2027. Worner would’ve 100% been delisted this year had we not given him 2 contract extensions before he’d even debuted.
