Prediction National Draft 2024

Happy with the Reid pick, time will tell with the other two but not optimistic. Boring draft but probably shows the work has been done the previous 5 or so years and it’s time to seriously challenge with the list we’ve developed.

What on earth is wrong with Nicholls. Rated by Twomey and others in the 30-40 range. Developing Key forward from SA who takes a good mark has very good speed for 197cm and also very good endurance.

Someone please tell me Delean was injured with OP and is going to have a breakout season
Not quite that far, but him having an unimpressive draft year was probably inevitable. He was REALLY hyped up in his u17 year (like top 10 to watch: https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/35150185/afl-draft-top-10-prospects-2023), and while that faded in his u18 year he still did enough that his range was thought to be closer to early 2nd round than the pick 60 he was taken at. The talent is very obviously there.

Issue: he was a pure goalscorer who had iffy speed, endurance and was skinny. A trifecta of bad physical attributes. He was never gonna be amazing in his first year outside the highlights he showed himself capable of delivering. On top of that, I believe there were stories out there about how coaches would blow a gasket at him for being out of position routinely.

If I'm trying to sell you on hopium re Delean, I'd say that plenty of others have mentally turned it around at the age Delean's at right now. He also went down to WAFL Reserves and, on the stats at least, it seems like he took the dropping as motivation. Tackle numbers in particular looked good, though I think some of those games were wet weather conditions where everyone was getting tackles.

hate to say it but I love West Coasts draft
West Coast will get a lot of credit for their draft, because they essentially took the highest rated propect by the media available at nearly every selection. And teams that do the opposite get smashed. But time will tell

Cal has mentioned before an idea that every club submits its draft rankings after the draft privately. Then they can release the aggregated draft rankings. Would be fascinating because they would be wildly different I think

Haven’t seen enough of him to make an in depth judgement but his highlights are average and just looks like an athlete rather than a footballer. Kicking a big question mark too. Hope I’m proven wrong.

On paper looks good using the draft rankings, though I find it hilarious that seemingly every player they picked has kicking as a weakness in their draft profile.
Didn't even think of that but yeah Allan, Davis and Gross doing a kick to kick would be a sight to see.

I'm no drafting expert, but I will say that I've followed phantom drafts and drafting profiles for 15+ years. One thing that is noticeable, is that a majority of the time, players slide for a reason.

The times that our fans thought we 'reached' for certain picks, have actually turned out for the best. Here I'm thinking of Fyfe, Hill, Ballas, Pearce, Frederick, etc. Even Brayshaw. There were melts as there were 'higher rated' players available on the board.

Last year we picked up 'bargains' in Murphy and Dealan, and I don't think there's been anything to say that they should have gone higher last year.

Let's just wait and see on this intake. There's literally no reason to melt.

Well, I wouldn't have used 36 on a KPF, but if we were committed to Carr then I guess we had to take one there. Or he could simply be best available.

Certainly has some nice traits. Gut feel is that size and speed is prime to take over from AP in 3-4 years but we already have all the KPDs so I suspect he plays forward to start. Don't think he does anything for our KPF depth in the short term though. We'll play Reidy, Cox and probably Davies or Murphy as forwards before him.

I do think it makes sense to take project players as you don't have to try and give them games early. Wouldn't expect to see either of the boys from today in 2025. Reid I think will force himself in at least a little next year.

Also think there is a good chance we are factoring in the NGA and future trades. Whan and Robinson are both consistently in higher level squads. Even Hart has decent pedigree but seems the type that could go either way. Plus the possibility of Chad or Pickett. I think our drafting might make more sense in 2-3 years time.

And contrary to popular belief, Banners and Walters probably are better small forwards for 2025 than anyone we could pick outside the first 20 or so. And I don't think we are in need of decent small forwards (we already have those), it's high end or don't bother AFAIAC.

I don’t remember any talk about Delearn being a bargain. Murphy yes.

Genuinely feels like we didn't open up enough list spots for this draft

Clubs were clammering to get in as evidenced by brissy off loading their spares
Seems that way, but we'd have to trade out of 2025 to do it and with possible trades and potentially 1-2 bids to match (under stricter points rules) I don't think it made sense for us.

The fox ratings had him at like 40 from memory. Pretty sure the "bargain buy" thing popped up for both of them.

I think for the first time freo have had to think what players are coming through the NGA as they are allowed to bid as normal.
Sorry I haven’t watched whan and hart but others have and rate them ok.
I’ve seen Robinson and he’s gone through a growth spurt since carnival.
He could be a beast and has a lot of country mongrel.
Predicticting the future while not fun is going to be fun to watch

Just I’d go through the Rookie Draft tomorrow for those worried about Knobel. Before people question me - Richmond’s list is full except for Category B rookies so I’ve left them out on purpose.

1. North - Pink (One spot left - have committed to him)
2. West Coast - They’ve committed to Burgiel as a train on and Champion will indirectly take their other list spot (they already have two Cat B rookies)
3. Adelaide - Burgess/Schoenberg (Two spots left - have committed to both)
4. Melbourne - one spot available.
5. Gold Coast - four spots available
6. St Kilda - two spots available
7. Essendon - three spots available (likely Prior SSP)
8. Freo - Knobel

I think they’ll be one selection in the PSD (Day to Brisbane) so Knobel has to get past four teams. Three of those teams drafted rucks today.
