Would be good to see the order of Berry, Allen and Reid to know if they got shafted or not.
So many things I wanna know

Where did we actually have Carr? Seems like we were predetermined on picking him with our final spot.

Where do we rank Narkle in the scheme of things (Do we have any regrets locking him away? Seemed to happen really early on)

Where was Nicholls placed for us?

Where did we have Davis

Where were Toner/Davidson/Hannaford/Bowman for us

Walls said himself it was a strong draft but it feels like we went in with 2 live picks, such a weird 2 nights.

It's hard to know but I don't think Carr was being looked at by anyone else.

So we were shafted by West Coast and Port. Gotcha.
Can’t really blame either club tbh. Port were as keen on Berry as we were. Even with no trades they wouldve taken him before us. If we traded with WC there’s no guarantee Port wouldn’t have taken their man Allan. I thought it was just petty of WC not to trade with us but really it would’ve put their own pick at risk if they did. Would’ve been nice is Port had gone early on Whitlock though.

Carr took our last available list spot, if there were any massive sliders that Walls rated we would have taken them at 63. It doesn't really matter that he could have made it to the rookie draft - pick 63 was our final list spot

By all reports could've been taken by Brisbane in the MSD if he had nominated. The West reported that they offered him an 18 month contract.

But yeah, doubt he had any interest in the ND.

We screwed ourselves over in that sense. If there were any sliders at our last pick we couldn't take them because despite the official reports, we had comitted to taking him. He was even getting involved in all of the off season training sessions with the guys.

Yeah only 2 live picks really after talking the draft up so much is something...

Seemed to go early on comitting to players. Narkle and Carr could've both joined as SSP rookies with Odin likely out long term. Then could've bundled some futures and moved up to one of Brisbane's earlier late picks.

Does seem a bit poorly executed

Not quite that far, but him having an unimpressive draft year was probably inevitable. He was REALLY hyped up in his u17 year (like top 10 to watch: https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/35150185/afl-draft-top-10-prospects-2023), and while that faded in his u18 year he still did enough that his range was thought to be closer to early 2nd round than the pick 60 he was taken at. The talent is very obviously there.

Issue: he was a pure goalscorer who had iffy speed, endurance and was skinny. A trifecta of bad physical attributes. He was never gonna be amazing in his first year outside the highlights he showed himself capable of delivering. On top of that, I believe there were stories out there about how coaches would blow a gasket at him for being out of position routinely.

If I'm trying to sell you on hopium re Delean, I'd say that plenty of others have mentally turned it around at the age Delean's at right now. He also went down to WAFL Reserves and, on the stats at least, it seems like he took the dropping as motivation. Tackle numbers in particular looked good, though I think some of those games were wet weather conditions where everyone was getting tackles.
If that’s the case, then why delist Emmett? So stupid is in hindsight

I’m very skeptical whether the changes made have made even half the changes that are urgently required.

It’s still possible to match a top ten pick with a bunch of picks in the 30s and 40s if you’ve got enough of them. All they’ve done is bring what’s useful forward ten picks or so.

Discounts should’ve been entirely removed and going into deficit almost removed (I’m fine if clubs are short by very minimal amounts). Parameters on how many draft picks can be used to match a bid are also desperately needed.

Brisbane should’ve only been able to match the Ashcroft bid if they traded their future first and/or a best 22 player. I don’t think we’re ever getting there tbh but the draft is borderline broken until we do.

And yes, clubs actually bidding when they should would help a lot.
Yes agree
You should have to use a first round yourself if a bid comes I first round. Or at least limit the amount of picks that can be used from one round.
Brisbane using 4 x picks in the 40’s I think it was to match a top 5 pick is crazy.

Yes but we shafted ourselves by swapping pick 11 with 14.
Always not going to end well if you let west coast have the pick before you. Disappointing if they were pro active in making sure Port got in front of us as well.
Port were already in front on us, WC played them beautifully, “hey port, Freo trying to trade to get ahead of you, we’d like pick 45 please”

Richmond were the campaigners, could have easily just accepted 10 + 18 for Bolton and Kept 14 from Baker to take their guy Faull. But needed to “win” the trade, I ****ing hate them for it.

Yes, but Richmond couldn’t have known who would Faull where, and maybe a player they wanted didn’t slip through, we will never know.
Fixed.

Genuinely feels like we didn't open up enough list spots for this draft

Clubs were clammering to get in as evidenced by brissy off loading their spares
I think the opposite. Outside of Reid we got a couple of roughies. Overall this draft shows signs of being overhyped.

Regarding the roughies, probably a good move to go with developable players with upside.

I think the top 17 were pretty good overall, and 18 to 30 (maybe 35) was pretty good if you were looking for a key position player.

It just appeared to me that certain types of players went together, and those were the players we were looking for as well.
