Good post. A change to the academy system would only advantage us.

If Matt Clarke always wanted McAuliffe and Fawcett with our picks from what was available, then the trading with West Coast and Fremantle was very astute.
And Essington with a F4 tied to the Pies, pick 74

Going by this years ladder positions we added 824pts of draft value (equals pick 23) by making those 3 trades.

The list management crew have a fair bit of work in front of them next year with about 20 players out of contract and a bucket load of trades available to improve our draft hand.

Gives Yze a bit of flexibility in assessing the list over the next 12 months then making changes as needed.

Its a great position to be in, we could very easily turn our current draft hand into an additional 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder, hitting the draft with 2 x 1st's and a 2nd.

Or we could target a star in a trade.

Remains to be seen why we've stockpiled so many late picks. Only thing I can fathom is we reckon there's gonna be scope to trade them up with teams desperate for points. Carlton has the 2 f/s's incoming are we banking on them working with us?
Packaging up a dozen late 3rd/4th rounders isn't gonna net us a 1st rounder. Quantity doesn't equal quality in reality even if the points balance out.

Wonder why Arie Schoenmaker slipped so far down.

Don’t think he tested that well at the combine and copped a 10 game ban for doing something silly

He’d be lucky if he gets picked up in the rookie or supplementary period. Might have to do his time in the state leagues for a bit

Reckon our hand could be a little better than 2 1sts and a 2nd rounder.

Our 6 x 3rd & 4th round picks equate to pick 11 so a deal with the Lions/Blues would net us a pick around 14-17, so 2 x 1sts and 2 x early 2nds.

He got suspended for 10 weeks earlier in season for off field stuff.

Well points do matter in F/S bidding, our 6 x 3rd and 4th rounders equal pick 11, so a team with who's pick is around 14-17 will lose it and will trade for more points to match a bid, obviously there has to be a points gain for the club trading out a 1st round pick and that'll be the price we pay to move up the order

Depends where West Coast and Freo finish really. I can easily see those 3rd rounders together getting us a 2nd rounder if clubs are looking at F/S or academy players. (Won't be just Carlton).
It would then give us 3 second rounders who could easily get us a 1st round pick if a club is looking for points. (Its not going to be a top 1st rounder imo) Its still smart trading from a position of nothing really.
Think the Essendon pick trade doesn't get used but the club probably thought you never know.

ST kilda drafted him with a pick in the 60’s

Only works if the kid is a likely first rounder. We've crystal balled a few gun father/sons obviously but if they go to shit and their value drops we're stuck with a bunch of useless picks. Not really a big deal since we got the 2 kids we were targeting anyway this year.

The younger Ashcroft kid is touted to be better than his brother who was bid on and taken at number 2 last year.

"Regarded just as highly as what his brother was at the same age, Levi Ashcroft had a game-high 32 disposals and 20 handball receives as he gave Vic Metro ample run across the ground. He also had a classy moment inside 50, gathering a loose ball, changing direction and snapping a terrific goal".

So for only the loss of Soldo, based on 2023 ladder we’ve basically turned our 2024 draft hand from:

6 / 24 / 42 / 60

into…

6 / 24 / 25 / 39 / 42 / 43 / 60 / 70 / 74

So let’s presume we will do 1 x major ‘points’ trade for a F/S or Academy kid …. 25/39/42/43/60 is worth 2,121. So we trade that for let’s say pick-7 which is worth 1,644.

That means we end up with:

6 / 7 / 24 / 70 / 74

So effectively Soldo, some pick shuffles and a 3rd for pick-7…. now that’s some good business.

That gives us great flexibility to hit the draft hard if we have a poor 2024 (and even look to trade a couple of senior bodies to further boost our draft hand). Or some great picks for a trade (King/Cadman) if 2024 looks like our list is in good shape.

They’ve done a great job to effectively go back 5 spots in the draft for 2 x F3’s from teams unlikely to be at the pointy end. Kudos!

Lol. The Pies want the bidding system changed. How did they get Nick Diacos again?

Yeah, a friggin joke. Let’s change the bidding system after Pies have secured: Naicos, Josh Daicos, Darcy Moore and Isaac Quaynor.

Their club would’ve been a rabble for the best part of 15-years without the pure luck of F/S (add in T Cloke, J Cloke, H Shaw, R Shaw).

Meanwhile Tigers rebuilt during expansion teams and in the last 20-years have secured Roach, Bourke, Raines, Naish and probably a couple of other F/S busts…. and no academy picks.
