No 15 hidden away is Josh Goater.

Pick 156 Oscar Adams (obligatory left field South Aussie who we've never heard of)

Rookie NGA Cat B Jack Peris
read your messages mate :D

As much as I really like Gibcus, I will cry if we pass on Josh Ward.

Exactly what we need

I've got my fingers croseed the top 10 falls that way and Ward us still available
I don’t like gibcus at our pick, plenty of mids it would be crazy to pass on a player like ward. Nothing on the small sample I’ve watched on tv screams key position defender, gibcus could just as easily end up another third tall.

I can't really understand why anyone thinks he won't be a key defender.

Has clearly got the size at 196cm and 87kg and likely still growing and is very good in one on one situations.

It's only this year where his intercept marking has taken off to a new level as well.

Strengths:
Vertical and running vertical jump
Contested marking
Intercept marking
Reading of the ball in flight
One-on-one defence
Shutdown capabilities

Closing speed
Tackling

I too would love Ward to slide to us bit see it as unlikely. I just don't see any mids that likely end up at that pick I'd be confident of having a better career than Gibcus.

no way Ward gets anywhere near our pick but if he does we lock that in without a second of doubt and run away like thieves. He's pretty much the best of the non father son picks probably equal to Callaghan but without the in vogue "Bont like" traits

Windhager the far more impressive prospect based off the footage I’ve seen. Bursts away from contests and a better user by foot. Looks very exciting.
At the start of the season he was the one mentioned as a possible top 20 pick. I’m not sure why he slid down the list even before his injury.

How often Windhager’s “explosiveness” is praised in draft notes is the thing that gets me excited about him. Obviously would prefer we get both Owens and Windhager but I’ll still be happy with Windhager.

Warning: long optimistic post/rant ahead 😉

Get excited people. Genuinely reckon we are a strong chance to get a really really good player from this draft, despite being just outside the top 10. If we were even just one spot back I wouldn’t be confident but I reckon we are in the sweet spot to land a big one. Would be stoked with either talls (Gibcus/Andrew) or a one of Ward/Erasmus/Johnson/Sinn/NWM/Rachele. Really just so many unknown factors in this draft (re: covid) but if there’s one thing our recruiting team has proven, we know how to draft in unknown territory.

We should get a player equal to the task of the potential of the saints team atm and into the next decade. Think the captaincy of Steele, the dominance of King(s), our young core coming through from Clark, to Heath, to Bytel, to Sharman. Not all are stars yet, but we see the tangible potential, and that’s why this is exciting, we should get an eventual best 22 player to add to the mix. Not to mention hopefully two very promising players in Windhager and Owens (and maybe Peris/Kyle). It should be a very good haul that will inject a massive amount of quality youth.

Our potential list of players under 25 years old (at time of writing):

Gresham (24)
Clark (22)
Coffield (22)
Sharman (21)
Long (24)
Byrnes (20)
Bytel (21)
Heath (19)
Higgins (22)
Joyce (24)
Pick 11 (18)
Highmore (23)
Allison (19)
Paton (23)
Owens (18)
Connolly (20)
Windhager (18)
Battle (23)
King (21) (+Bing? 🤞)
Peris (18)
Kyle (18)

Out of the 21 listed players (excluding Bing), only 6 are currently 23 to under 25. That’s a lot to work with in building a very strong team for the future. And of course we also have a fair amount of class players beyond the 25 range who we typically see as our maturer leaders (think Steele, Dougs, Marshall, Membrey).

BTW, players currently aged 25:

Cal Wilkie
Dougal Howard
Dan McKenzie
Dan Butler
Jack Steele

As I said in the warning, this is a rant, so I’m not entirely sure what my overall point is. But what I do know that is that we nail this draft, we do justice to an already strong list with a lot of potential from our young players. I foresee 2022 as a really strong year for development. We should see those aged between 22-25 really taking a step forward barring injuries, letting the youth below them step up into their shoes. We nail the draft, and that younger group is being led by players like King, Sharman, Byrnes and possibly Owens or Pick 11 (say Sinn or Gibcus for example). Should we properly develop next year, we will see massive improvements in our list as we come out of the 2010s list mis-management error. Top it off with a finals appearance and a big fish in 2022, (Bing, or, instead hitting the high-end of the draft again, or, big free agent) and we are well and truly rebuilt into a sustained contending team.

I know it’s optimistic, but I don’t think it’s unrealistic. Keep the management of the club as smart as it has been, and let things run their course - because atm we are on the right track. And it all kicks off on Wednesday/Thursday night. If we are going to land a generational player or two, this covid-interrupted draft is the time to do it. Let’s make the most of it, and do justice to the immense potential of our list and our youth. Massive pre-season/season ahead! 🔴⚪⚫

TLDR:

The kids are alright, we’ll be alright.

Yep, the consensus seems to be he’s second round quality. If we get him for bugger all after getting Sharman and Heath for nothing last year we’ll have done ok.

My mate that is pretty well connected said that we are very very keen on Sinn. Not sure where he heard it though, he was talking generally about the draft and said it like it was a done deal. Not my first choice but not the worst choice. I guess if someone slides then anything can happen though.
ave heard Sinn too from someone with good links to the saints.

Pretty hard to find a good comparison to Owens.

We don't really know his best position yet and he's played just about everywhere.

I guess he's been likened to Steele as he was a forward-mid when drafted that was quite good overhead similar to Owens.
I’ve found it tough too. I’ve got too comps combined bare in mind this is purely stylistic.
On the one hand he remind a bit of former saint Nathan Wright in terms of his toughness and overhead marking and explosiveness.
On the other hand he reminds me a bit of Timy Taranto in terms of his midfield ability marking and body strength.

Interesting Owens gets ranked ahead of Chesser, Howes, Draper and Brown...

21. MITCHITO OWENS

Position: Midfielder-forward

Size: 190cm, 85kg

Club: Sandringham Dragons/Beaumaris/Mentone Grammar/Vic Metro

AFL player comparison: Elliot Yeo

A speedy, versatile and agile midfielder that had an awesome back-end to his 2021 campaign. Owens kicked a goal from 29 disposals and seven marks for Vic Metro in an Under 19’s challenge match against Vic Country, while he averaged 23.3 disposals, 5.7 marks and 3.7 inside 50s from his final three NAB League games. He’s grown 10cm in the past 12 months, meaning he’s become a greater threat at stoppages and developed strong overhead marking skills. Owens is tied to St Kilda through the club’s Next Generation Academy program. The Saints mightn’t have a chance to bid on him – unless they take him with their first selection (Pick 9) – as clubs with existing links to multicultural and Indigenous Academy players are now unable to match bids inside the top 20 selections. And Owens has clubs with top 20 picks interested, including North Melbourne and the Giants. However it’s expected Owens will still end up at the Saints.

Draper has slid due to injury. Interesting that they say North has interest in Owens, first I'm hearing of it

Even though I think we will get him I don’t like cutting it that fine. Would of preferred him being rated around 25

I think it will be. Putting him at 21 generates more clicks because we all get worried therefore more $$ for them. Academy players also tend to drop on the night because clubs don't think they can get him. We should be fine

Is Josh the new Jack ? Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but fox sports draft power ratings top 50 have FIVE Josh's in the top 14.
FIVE !!! Rachele, Ward, Gibcus, Goater and Sinn. Must have been a popular boys name with people bonking 19/20 years ago......:eggplant: Maybe
I've got too much time on my hands noticing this stuff ?

You could hardly say knocked out of the park. All of those players listed are still very speculative.

It is really when they all look to have the ability to play AFL and they are all picks in the 50s or rookie draft , Allison the highest pick and he was a pick in the early 20s and he still has time to show his stuff.

Its kind of weird, it wasn't a particularly popular name in the USA , and i can't think of any celebrities at the time that would have incited people to name their kids that.

I will back team in to draft best available at 11...whether big or small. NWM is the only one who I am a bit concerned about, with no knowledge just worry it could be Nick Winmar re-visited. Am hoping this will be our last good first round choice for a few years, don't want to be too speculative with it.
