Had used close to 100% of my salary cap initially. Due to injury and S Thompson, had to trade out a mid-priced backman, and brought in N Brown (Coll).

This week, I've got over 200,000 sitting in the bank.

If the values of my players change significantly (ie, Aaron Davey is going down big time) at the first role over, am I better off having spent that money (I ie, will I loose it), or will that 200,000 buffer just sit in the bank regardless?

The buffer sits in the bank regardless.

However the value of the player going down will affect what other players you can get.

For example say you have player A and you want player B. Player A costs 400k now and player B costs 600k now. With your 200k buffer you can make the trade now.

After prices change player A might drop to 375k and/or player B might jump to 625k. You still have the 200k in the bank, but you can't make the trade anymore.

Hope that helped.

Tremendously helpful! Thanks very much.

Apologies if this is a hijack. I joined the forums a couple of weeks ago but still can't create a thread. Not sure why but my questions are on topic for this thread though, hence my posting here.

Please let me know if I should have done something else?

I have a couple of questions re trading:

1)

It appears to be accepted wisdom around here that sideways trading is not a good idea. However, Given how well Josh Hill has started the season, he obviously looks pretty sweet right now.

Problem is (if you want to call it that), my forwards have been very good so far and the only ones due to fall (on current form), are Pav and Riewoldt, neither of whom I will trade. The rest of them have played really well, which leaves me no real option if I want Hill except for rookie-swapping.

I have 3 FWD rookies: Rioli, Gamble, and Tippett. Rioli and Gamble are untouchable for me at the moment, but it is tempting to trade out Tippett (especially after his knee bend on the weekend) and try to run with Hill for a little while.

To the guys in the know, is this really a bad idea? Hill looks super impressive and could be one of those A Everitt, J Roe types to post some big consistent scores as a rookie. Tippett looks like a great talent, but probably a 50 pt per gamer barring injuries.

2)

On the trading sideways subject, I have serious doubts re Masten at the moment. I know he's only played 1 game, and I do not doubt his potential, but for an in-and-under player he looks very small, both in height and in build. After the Adelaide game I am questioning whether he can command a place in the eagles side this year (so might only play a couple of games). It seems a real likelihood that he will end up in the WAFL for most of this season so he can bulk up a bit.

The best looking rookie MID I can currently see is Morton (MEL). Is it far too early to think of trading Masten out? The key benefit I was seeing is to ride the Morton wave upwards, although with Geelong this week he might not be due for a huge one.

What do you guys think about Masten? I'm worried that he needs a year in the twos. What are your thoughts?

3)

Finally, what are the experts thoughts on trading players down?

I had hoped to trade Jason Gram up to an Elite at some stage early-ish in the season, but currently I am looking at potential opportunities in the other direction, partly due to some strong performances from cheaper - but good quality defenders.

I see the opportunity to trade down from Gram, bank $100k - $250k cash, and trade in somebody who is capable of posting similar averages but will also have a strong value uplift.

Should I back off and wait for my opportunity to upgrade Gram, or is the downgrade a legitimate, if riskier option?

cheers.

Hi SNE. My comments are as follows.

Trading guns is pretty much a negative unless they pull a 2007 Barry Hall on you and start scoring 10 points in a game. Even then you usually allow them a few really bad games before you even consider it. You pick cash cows and use your trades in general to upgrade to elite players, hence you never really want to trade out an elite player unless its a long term injury.

I'll be trading in Josh Hill but I'm downgrading Akermanis. Downgrading is fine, however it also carries with it some risk. I doubt Hill is going to be as prominent in the coming weeks, remember he did play Melbourne last week. Sideways trading for a rookie is always pretty stupid unless you're sure the rookie you have isn't going to get a game and has a long term injury. Even then its a bit meh. Trades are worth their weight in gold and they should be used wisely and after careful consideration.

Perfect example is what happend to me last week. I was $800 short if not I would have traded out Akermanis/Dyson for BJ/Longeran. BJ looked in good form and they were playing the Demons. Dyson scored 33 and looked like crap. If I had gone through with it that trade would have cost me about 80 points this week and some cash in the coming weeks with Dyson set to increase in value nicely.

Same problem with Masten, I think hel get a run this week and hope for our sakes he has a good game and over the next couple of weeks cements his spot in the west coast midfield.

Have the same three rookie forwards as your good self. Look, Hill would be great, but think about it - you have had three rookies all playing (although Tippett may miss some time). You will have two playing and scoring well this week at the very least. Tippett will get more game time during the year. Not worth a trade to Hill in my opinion, they will all make you some handsome cash.

Hey Guys,

I really appreciate the comments. It's nice to hear from some of the gurus of this fine board! :)

You've given me plenty to think about, and I take your point re the BJ / Dyson situation Spartan.

Well, there's still a few days left until the sides are named, and maybe the Masten question will be partly answered then - or at worst by the weekend...

cheers :thumbsu:

I have always been in the understanding that having tall players is a huge risk as they are found wanting when it comes to playing on the big time defenders forwrds unless they are a freak such as Nathan Brown (Coll) i would trade hill in for Tippet as Hill has shown that he does everything, takes marks, tackles kicks goals and gets plenty of the ball. should be an interesting choice when prices change after round 3.

as for the Masten issue, i would keep him, he showed enough for my liking. he was a number 3 draft pick and tore it up in the pre season so he should be able to cope with the pressure that surrounds premiership footy.
So i would keep Masten and keep him on the sidelines for a week or two.

Hope it helps mate

this rounds trades are probably the most important so just wondering if i could get some advice does anyone think quinten lynch will start performing? i'm thinking about trading him out but would that be a waste? he just doesn't seem to be getting the supply this year up forward with the eagles depleted forward line planning on trading
dew- > hill
lynch -> BJ
is it worthwhile? or is it just a wasted 2 trades

I'm not a fan of trading guns.

i dont like doing it either but would you classify lynch as a gun though? his scores are fairly average and the way the eagles are playing will he get back to his best
i would have like to have kept him for the year or should he just be a keeper anyway?

When you spend over 500k on a player you would hope you would consider him a gun.

I dunno I would keep him atleast for a few more rounds. The Eagles got smashed on the weekend, hopefully won't happen too often (or at all) for the rest of the season. :)

ah okay then i'll keep him i kinda forgot about how great the score was on the weekend =]
just wodnering spartan you goign to get hill into your team? if so who are you goign to drop for him

I'm dropping Akermanis for Hill. He burnt me last year. I then got sucked into the hype during the pre-season and took the chance on him again. Funny thing is I got burnt by Tredders last year too, however I decided to go akermanis over Tredders.

The 300k i pocket will either go to upgrading Stevens to GAblett or waiting a few weeks and then upgrading Dyson to GAblett.
