This period reminds me of soccer clubs who constantly tinker with their designs from year to year. Just look at Juve’s kits over the last 5 seasons, they’re all over the shop.

The cultural differences between the sports wrt identity is quite interesting. For some reason Aussie Rules is extremely conservative when it comes to change, every single element of the guernsey is almost considered sacred. Soccer clubs on the other hand have a much broader concept of what constitutes their identity and are happy to experiment with different interpretations (mostly for the sake of merch revenue I assume haha).
The last bit you wrote - mostly for the sake of merch revenue I assume haha - is a very big reason why.

My mate is a big Arsenal fan, was born in UK and immigrated when he was about 5, and has been going to watch home games every year since about 2005 (at Highbury and then Emirates) as with his current job as MD of a well known SA business, he always has a conference or two in Europe when the season is on and usually catches 2 or 3 games. Then if he takes the family for a Euro holiday he gets to see more games as he pops into UK to see family.

He said the volume and $$ value of shirts sales are ridiculous. He says every home game he goes to, the lines are huge, and people will buy up whatever Arsenal puts out, to be able to say they have a full set of shirts for X number of years.

He says the A-league, AFL, NRL, just don't have anything like what the volume of sales the big EPL clubs and big Euro clubs have for shirts sale. It's partly because you can wear a soccer shirt around the place, to the shops, to school or uni, to some work places, down to the park or beach etc. Footy jumpers you can't wear around like a normal shirt or t-shirt like you can with soccer shirts. Its one of the reasons why sponsorship contracts for big Euro soccer clubs is so big because not only do you have big value on the billboard component on TV of your name on the shirt, but you could have a couple of million people regularly walking around Europe with their name on peoples chest as they walk around the streets, shops, schools and offices.

I put up a chart of the value and industries of EPL shirt sponsorships, 12-18 months ago and the values are off the charts in one of the sponsorship talk threads. Might see if I can dig it up.

Edit I posted it here in August last year.

and in the same thread page 40 December 2017, cut and paste of part of my post re Manchester United's 2015/16 financial fillings with the UK equivalent of ASIC.

Commercial income alone was £90m more than City’s; unusually, the filings of United plc (registered in the Cayman Islands) cite the amounts of individual sponsorships: £72.7m from Adidas in the year; £59m from shirt sponsor General Motors.

The fans are rarely happy about it though.

A few things told today.
Wish I lived through this era.

I did mate. ☺ In fact, i helped make that banner and many more. Was in the Port cheer squad 1966 to 1973. No premierships but it was still awesome times. I'm having a guess it was his 100th game. We made the banners in a large room at the club that would now be the downstairs dining/bar area. Main rivals during those years were Glenelg, Sturt and North. There are 4 of us from those cheer squad days who still go the footy together. Half of us now need the lift to avoid the stairs but 😊 !!!

.

What I heard today from source, not sure how correct, no guarantees, OK. 👍

* the new logo is as combination of two logos into a single one. Only meant for 2020 but could become more permanent.
* Pirate Lite seems to have some role to play but he wouldn't elaborate.
* he (surprisingly) mentioned new guernsey design !!
* the march will no longer be from Rundle Mall because casino and railways are blocking access. New march route will be from Wellington Hotel in North Adelaide down Jeffcott Street.

Don't shoot me if not correct. I'm just a messenger of hearsay 😀

One of the memories.

The club publicly disowned us for holding up four large placards up.
I think it was mainly in reference to Graham Cornes, but could also be used for numerous Glenelg players. Only lasted one game but it was worth it.
One placard, with one letter on each F. A. R. T
To this day, I still can't see what was so wrong.
Some people have no sense of humour.

Another classic.
The cheer squad travelling to Melbourne for a pre-season game with a Victorian side.
But we had to book as the Ottoway Boys and Girls Youth Club because we somehow got banned by the railways from something that happened the year before. To this day I can't remember how a live chucked got in the carriage but there it was when we arrived in Adelaide.
Such fun 😀

Sorry, no more old man stories !

Supposed to be live chicken...

It will be easy to whinge and complain about any changes, but some of our great administrators have made some shocking changes and decisions over the years.

Not better example than the guernsey. Charles Hayter was Secretary of the Club from 1927 to 1948, when he had a heart attack and passed away mid season ie the equivalent of today's CEO and Big Bob Mclean from 1949 to 1980 (1969 titled changed to General Manager) then was chairman for a few years from 1983 when there was a President (the #1) and Chairman . Hayter more than Big Bob but both made some poor choices.

This is from The Guernsey Memorabilia poster which the club produced in 2014 (I think that was the year). Look at some of the shocking changes we made before getting it right.

Fair enough in WWII when we merged with West Torrens when the main league was suspended, but why not change straight back to our pre WWII jumper design in 1945 when the league recommenced??

First 2 Pre Hayter 1902-10 and 1911-26

Hayter's time as Secretary
3rd 1927-36
4th 1937-41 ( looks like more wharf less pylons)
5th 1942-43
6th 1944-45
7th 1946
8th 1947-50 Big Bob becomes Secretary in 1949

9th 1951 used the Collingwood jumpers during the Jubilee of Federation season.
10th1952-96
11th 1996-2011
