I would have preferred somebody from outside the present coaching structure, a clean break if you will.

He must of said no to them in the last couple of days for this to happen. Why else keep the appointment this late?

Because they have had a thorough process and have slowly but surely culled candidates.

Why hurry?

It was us that were reading into it about Bomber, not once did the club say they were after him.

They had a process, they followed it, they came up with whom they thought was the best candidate.

Congrats to Knighter, a new era has arrived.

What's new, the last couple of months all i'm interpreting of Essendon supporters is that we sound like whining hyenas.

Accept change..cos it's happening wether you like it or not.

Believe it or not im not actually against his appointment. As i posted earlier on in this discussion. The board has made their decision and im happy to give the guy a go.

WTF are we not still going after Bomber Thompson? Did he pull out?

Hardwick would have been my preference....

Seriously, Knights could;t even coach the magoos to a win in their last final when they were 40 points up at 3/4 time - crazy bloody board.

All I can say is, we had better get Judd or I won't be buying a membership for 2008 - 1st time in 25 years.

Thats a ridiculous statement. Do you think he would have actually said "OK guys, we are 40 points up, just pull back a bit to save energy" Knights wasnt actually playing, and I dont see how a coach can be held responsible for a performance like that.

Im willing to see what he brings to the table. All along ive said that I wanted Bond or Hardwick as coach, because I admired them as players. Hardwick wasmy choice because I thought the way he played as a player could be used as an example to all the players. Matty Knights also brings those qualities to the table, so im not disappointed.

Do you honestly believe that we would get Judd with an untried coach such as Knights as our coach. I honetsly believe that this appointment is a fair indication that we are not getting Judd.
Lets not go over the top here. The appointment has bee made lets get behind him and give the guy a chance.

Then you obviously no very little about the game.

I've coached footy for some time and there are ways that a coach can influence a momentum change. I was at the game, there were moves he could have made. It was a tactical balls up.

Must admit I was hoping for Hardwick, thought he could put some toughness back into our team that we have lost, although Knighter was no girl either. Grats to the man hopefully he leads us well!

Calm yourself Potato man. Most Essendon supporters in 1981 were scepitcal about a certain former Richmond player with one years worth of assistant coaching under his belt.

This is no time to be cutting up members tickets.

Mabye the Knights appointment has a great deal to do with the fact that Essendon are very scared of loosing some of their young talent. Who better to try and keep them at the club long term, than the coach who would have spent the most time with these players who is still at the club. Due to most of our young talent spending time at the Bendigo Bombers in the past few years. Im not saying that this is a fact but when you look at the appointment (which i don't believe many of us saw comming) maybe this reason played a part in Knights being appointed.

That's obviously your decision - think about this though - Matty Knights has been working with our young kids for the last 3 years. He knows these young men better than any one else in Australia - Sheedy included. Bring it on I say. Cant wait for 2008.

Essendon Football Club today announced the appointment of Matthew Knights as its senior coach. Managing Director, Peter Jackson, said Knights was the outstanding applicant following an extensive interview process and that he had accepted a three-year deal.
"I congratulate Matthew on his appointment and the board is very comfortable he has the necessary skills to get this Club back playing finals’ football," Jackson said.
"We had some excellent candidates for the position and each of those that made it to the final stages would have brought something to this football Club.
"However Matthew became more and more impressive as the interview process went on and we are very excited about the Club's future with him as coach."
Knights has coached the Bendigo Bombers for the past three years and last year joined the Essendon Football Club football department as development coach.
"This has been a thorough and diligent process and we make no apologies for the time it has taken to reach this decision. Our members and supporters would expect us to take the time required to get this decision right," Jackson said.
Knights, 36, played 279 games with Richmond and won the club’s best and fairest in 1990 and 1992. He captained Richmond for 101 games and was an All Australian in 1998.
"Essendon has a good young list and a very exciting future. I feel honoured to have been given this opportunity at a Club that has such a fantastic history," Knights said.
"Our supporters want the team to play a competitive and exciting brand of footy and that is what I will be aiming to deliver.

"There is a lot of hard work ahead to get us to that stage but I am really looking forward to the challenge."

Great timing bombers, in the middle of GF week, stealing the spotlight for a brief moment!

Look i was a bit sceptical, but this has been an exhaustive process, the board has obivously seen qualities in knights that are above the other applicants. He knows where the young ones are at better than any other outsider.

Good luck knights and get us back to where we belong.

What on earth do you base that assertion on?

You and the rest of the posters who are canning the appointment have absolutely no idea what the board were looking for and where Hardwick, Daniher and Sumich fell short. Further, Bomber Thompson has no doubt told Essendon he's not interested, and will stay at Geelong - that's why they announce it now, rather than wait until after the GF and then it looks like he rejected them

Three things are clear about Knights:

1. he coached Port Adelaide's SANFL side in 2004 (i.e. he has coached his own stand alone side)
2. he coached the Bendigo Bombers' side this year, in addition to being an assistant at Essendon this year
3. his a former club captain, B&F winner and All Australian player.

Given the above, I think he is an elite ex-player, who has built a good coaching CV and will be able to work well with the younger players on the Essendon list.

Did anyone give a thought as to why Sheedy was not re-appointed? Answer: because he couldn't communicate with the younger players properly.

One final point - does anyone recall Al Clarkson's CV before he got the job at Hawthorn? SANFL senior coach, Port Adelaide Assistant, then AFL senior coach. He has just been voted as the best Victorian coach of the year.

Wake up Essendon, this is a positive and well considered appointment.

Stop bagging it and get behind your club.

I wish him all the best but cant help thinking of Spud Frawley with this appointment.Anyway have to trust Ess. board on this one and must have done a sensational interview.

All of you whinging or laying in to Knights are a complete joke. You dont have a clue about the coaching process or how Knights will go as a coach. Anybody having a go at Knights before he gets a shot is worse than 'SaveEssendon' by a long way. Complete disgrace.
