Next season's NAB Cup format

The AFL are looking more stupid every day.

teams need a proper game not some kids comp

in 2014 there will be 4 too many teams in the AFL

I agree with the first two points.

Seriously, nobody wants to see a "round robin" twenty20 style footy FFS!!

Everyone wants to see a proper 4 quarter match.

I don't mind adding Team GWS to even out the numbers for the Nab Cup but this format is a joke.

Just keep it the way it is and add Team GWS. I can't believe it is that hard. Gee, these muppets can over-complicate the simplest of things.

This is a stupid idea, just scrap it altogether. At first it will be a novelty event, like when the 9-point rule Goal rule and a few others entered the Wizard Cup.

ridiculous idea.

just have a straight lightning comp with 15 minute halves, or go back to the original pre-season format, without all the bullshit gimmick rules like supergoals etc.

combining a lightning and regular formats together and calling it 20/20 is just ******ed.

Explain how they can "keep it the way it is" with more than 16 teams genius

16 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2

Doesnt work with 17 or 18

They should go even further and make the second round Twenty20 as well, to cut the competition down to just three rounds. Qualify only six teams from the first round and have them play in two groups of three for the "semi finals". Stretch the first round over two weeks to satisfy the sponsor and TV requirements.

If the first team wins 2 games the last game is a dead rubber.

The loser first game warms up for an hour, cools down for an hour then warms up again for an hour - way to go for injuries ! That team would just field reserves for the third game - therefore the team which plays games 2 and 3 will win - and get a one in three chance at the next round

This is a good novelty idea - plus 3 sets of fans turning up to matches will create an interesting atmosphere...

Here's how I'd program the first round:

Friday
7.40 Adelaide/Port Adelaide/Geelong (AAMI Stadium)

Saturday
4.10 Carlton/Collingwood/Essendon (Etihad Stadium)
7.10 Sydney/Melbourne/GWS (ANZ Stadium)
7.10 Brisbane/Gold Coast/Western Bulldogs (Cairns)

Sunday
1.10 Hawthorn/Richmond/St Kilda (Aurora Stadium)
4.10 West Coast/Fremantle/North Melbourne (Subiaco)

One grouping of games in every state should ensure good crowds.

I love the idea. As many people have said, three sets of fans rocking up to matches is going to be awesome.

can't wait to see how this transpires.

Very clever way to get around the first round problem with uneven draw IMO.

:thumbsu:

Like it.

Teams would have to match up with their cross town rivals.

Adelaide, Port, Melb Team
GWS, Sydney, Melb Team
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melb Team
West Coast, Fremantle, Melb Team
Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon
Melb Team, Melb Team, Melb Team

Could we possibly have one team eliminated from each group in the first week, then in week 2 the same format happens but with 4 groups of 3 and only top getting through. Week 3 could see both the Semis and Grand Final on the same day.

It's bloody stupid, and I hope my club would treat it as such and just play 22 kids.

How pissed off would you be if your gun player went in for the hour break, cooled down a bit, only to come out and bust his hammy 5 minutes into the second game you had to play? All for some stupid little gimmick.

How about Collingwood just voluntarily sits out the mundane NAB cup and we can revert back to the normal system.
I'm sure we wouldn't be too phased about missing out.

It can. With 18 teams, 4 teams play an elimination round, 2 eliminated, then 16 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2 as now. The first round of the NAB is split over 2 weeks now, so competition will still take 5 weeks to play with 18 teams.

I dont like this new proposal at all, even worse than the current NAB. The whole NAB thing was done to death on BF pre season. Best suggestion I saw was split into 2 to shorten it (a Vic comp and a National Comp).

will be a total flood-fest with teams basically able to sprint the entire game out getting back in defence.

will only work if they reduce the field to fifteen (or even twelve) a side.

I don't like the proposed format.

How about three teams on the pitch, three sets of goals. 12 players per team. Each team has a defensive and offensive goal. You get points for scores in your offensive goal and lose points for scores in your defensive goal - so teams can have negative scores.

The winner is the team to get to 60 points first. Each team's defensive and offensive goals swap when a team reaches 30 points.

Oh, and jet-packs for the rucks and cannons for the full forwards to launch out and take marks. Just imagine Buddy flying out of a cannon 50 metres in the air and taking a grab, then playing on and kicking a goal as he parachutes back to the goal square. This is the stuff excitement is made of.

And two goal umpires per goal - it's about time, AFL.

Not sure what to think.

Obviously once they go past 16 teams the old format doesn't work mathematically, there has to be another way of selecting who goes into the next round.

We need to have a pre-season - coaches want to have a look at their new recruits and rookies, and they want to experiment a bit with set-ups.

Not too sure about the proposed format playing two half-games against different opponents. That seems a bit mickey mouse to me.

I''d be a bit worried about the fitness staff down at wobbleland if they couldn't figure a way around this 'problem'.
