Very rare to be a D1 premiership chance without bringing in top end talent. WP have a strong junior and 19s program

I think Mont have done quite well.
Plenty of locals and added some icing on top.
The kid who was best on for Heidelberg in the 2nds will only play if a higher point player gets dropped or injured. I believe he is a 3 pointer.

First round 3/5 missing on West Preston and Macleod

Biggest winner of the weekend: Definitely Macleod who many gave no chance of winning at Shelley st, me included. A 10 goal to 5 second half did the damage after only 10 points separated them at half time. A great spread of goal kickers with 10 players hitting the scoreboard for Macleod.
Honourable mention to West Preston with a number of first gamers beat pre-season premiership favourites Bundoora. Ahmed Saad again proving to be a star with 6 majors.

Biggest loser of the round. No, surprise with Nth Heidelberg failing at home. Not a great start for the Bulldogs.
I would think both Hurstbridge and Northcote Parke would be disappointed with 55 and 78 points round 1 losses as well.

Ahmed Saad and Pat Fitzgerald lead the way with 6 majors each.

And finally a huge congratulations to Daniel “Bomber” Keenan who has announced his retirement. A legend of the NFNL.

NP didn’t fire a shot against Monty, will be a long season for them avoiding relegation at this stage.

Monty’s new big bloke looked the goods, dominated while Jong was relatively quite, I don’t think their tight ground suited him.

A few interesting games this week in round 2. Hard to pick.

BUN/MONT- Bundy Wouldn't want to start the season 0/2, especially against 2 other contenders. Bundoora by 15

WHIT/WEST- West just continue to be the benchmark. West by 40

MAC/HEID- Interesting game. Both teams were impressive. Are Macleod back or North just no good? Heidelberg by 20

GRENS/HURS- Hurstbrige are going to struggle. But half a chance at home. Greensborough by 20

NP/NORTH- North you would think comfortably. But interesting watch- North Heidelberg by 20

Round 2 and some good games coming up

Hursty (9th) take on Boro (5th). The slime started there season of with a workmanlike performance up the Showgrounds. Daniher by all reports showed a bit and the class of Johnston, Riddle and Bell saw them over the line. Hursty will be looking to improve on their efforts at Warrigal park last week going down easily to Heidelberg.
Only 1 change between both teams and Boro to go to 2-0 winning by 43 points.

Macleod (4th) take on Heidelberg (2nd) in a game which now means one of them will go to 2-0. Macleod surprised everyone (bar themselves) with a great win over the doggies and get Paynter back this week also. The Tigers were far to good for Hursty. Can Macleod stop the twin towers of Gilmore and Bellchambers. For me Heidelberg by 24 points.

West Preston (3rd) take on Whittlesea (6th). The roosters came out and gave pre-season favourites Bundoora a nice touch up in round 1. Saad showed he is still the best forward in the NFNL with 6 majors. The eagles pushed Greensborough for all 4 quarters but have lost Waite, Murphy and Laffy from their round 1 team. The roosters get back Valladares, Dreher and Lirosi. Can’t see the eagles kicking a winning score, roosters easily by 68 points.

Bundoora (8th) take on Mont (1st) in the match of the round. The bulls would be disappointed with their round 1 result and will need to bounce back at Yulong to avoid going 0-2 to begin the year. Mont got away to great start with Bzenic and Wale-Buxton both being named in the best. Lin Jong will enjoy the space at Yulong as well. For me Monty in a close one by 8 points

Northcote Park (10th) vs North Heidelberg (7th). Both teams would be disappointed in round 1 losses and look to open their 2022 account under light at westgarth st. The cougars lose Schroder which is a big out while the Dogs get back big man Daw. The Dogs won’t want to slip to 0-2 especially if they want to play finals and even at this early stage of the season, every 4 points is vital. Doggies by 27 points.

Enjoy the footy.

Hursty vs Boro - Few whispers of a bit of drama at the Boro. Hursty in an upset 12 points

Bundoora vs Mont - Mont looked the goods to me last week. Bundoora the hype side didn’t deliver. Mont 19

Macleod Vs Bergs - Bergs should win this 33

West Vs Whittlesea - Roosters nice and easily 50

NH vs NP - Terrible starts for both. Didn’t see much from NP to be excited about. North by 16

Whats the drama ?

Looks like big upsets with Whittlesea and Hurstbridge winning against the odds.
NFL D1 never disappoints and is a very unpredictable division

2 out of 5 last week missing in Hurstbridge, Whittlesea and Bundoora.

Biggest winner of the weekend: Huge win by the young Whittlesea outfit in defeating the roosters on their home deck. Not sure anyone would have given the eagles much of a chance especially without Waite, Murphy and Duffy. Great for the competition as well
Honour mention to Hurstbridge who knocked over the more fancied Greensborough as well.
Sets up a mouth watering ANZAC day clash between Whittlesea and Hursty in round 3.

Biggest loser of the weekend: Going with the roosters who would have pencilled in the 4 points against Whittlesea. Even champions can be beaten though and any complacency the roosters might have had definitely won’t be there moving forward.

Northcote Park would also be disappointed with their home showing against the Doggies, only kicking 4 goals. Lots of work for the cougars moving forward

NP has to be favourite for relegation at this point. Huge wins by the other sides in that zone

2 big Good Friday clashes kicks off Round 3. After 3 rounds only one undefeated team, 8 teams with a 1-1 record and only one team yet to open there 2022 account.

Greensborough (4th 1-1) take on Macleod (5th 1-1) Both teams coming off disappointing losses going down to Hurstbridge and Heidelberg respectively.
The Boro would be very disappointed in losing a close one to Hursty last week after looking to have the game won late into the last quarter.
Macleod on the other hand were outplayed by Heidelberg for most of the day.
Honestly think this is a toss of coin but will go with Boro at home by 6 points

Nth Heidelberg (6th 1-1) take on Bundoora (8th 1-1). Both teams opened there account last week with wins over Northcote Park and Montmorency.
The doggies getting the job done under lights at Bill Lawry Oval. The doggies will be looking for an increase on the offensive end if they are to beat the bulls.
The bulls had a great win in a high quality contest over Monty last week at Yulong. Class players across all lines and starting to gel, the bulls look like a top 3 team.
The Dogs will have to be at there best to get the win, even if they are, I think the bulls are a bit more talented from 1-22 and will move to 2-1. Bulls by 23 points

Macleod were outplayed in the 1st quarter only, other than that matched Heidelberg and outscored them for the remaining 3 quarters. I'm tipping Macleod by 2 goals
