Season felt ample long enough with 16 games imo. Why make it 18? The top 4 was basically set a long way out besides the fight for 4th.

I just don’t see the need for 18 especially in the environment of clubs at all levels struggling for reserves.
I would think 16 games over 18 rounds is basically guaranteed.

Finals would be a top 5, with an outside chance of a top 6. They both require 6 games over 4 weeks.

With Div 3 finals requiring an extra week, they would probably want to start Div 3 a week before Div 1 and Div 2 so they can keep the grand finals on different weekends.

The next step in the process regarding Ivanhoe and the OPs is for it to be ratified by AFL Victoria. The VAFA still have the right of refusal, however with this much water under the bridge now, I’d be surprised if they did.
Once that is done, the NFNL can start the task of fixturing.
VAFA have released their structure for 2024, with Division 4 being abolished. They are definitely not going to fight to keep Old Parade and Ivanhoe.

A top 6 would not be a bad idea if that were the case, in a draw that may be pretty unequal opening up an additional finals spot to counteract that may be beneficial if its still the same amount of finals games played?

Wk 1 - Elimination Finals - (EF1) 3 v 6 and (EF2) 4 v 5.

Wk 2 - Semi Finals - (2SF) 1 v 2 and (1SF) winner EF1 v EF2

Wk 3 - Preliminary Final - loser 2SF v winner 1SF

Wk 4 - Grand Final
Looks good, I don’t mind that at all! NFNL want all GF different days so a 16 game comp with a top 6 would be good

I can only see the first sentence but sounds like great news.

It’s a tick from us.

Northern league club presidents have overwhelmingly voted to accept two wantaway VAFA clubs into the competition next season.

Ivanhoe and Old Paradians presented to club representatives last night at Heidelberg Golf Club in the hope of playing in 2024.

Both were accepted and, if there’s no objection from the amateurs, the decision will be ratified by AFL Victoria.

Should that happen, the pair are expected to be entered into Division 3, which would expand to an 11-team competition.

The Hoers and Raiders have almost 200 years of history combined in the VAFA but both were determined to move leagues in the hope of long-term sustainability.

Ivanhoe members voted in August to move leagues.

After being accepted last night, president Peter Rawley said it was an exciting time for the club.

“We presented and it went to a vote but some people I know advised me we were unanimously voted through. That’s greatly appreciated,” Rawley said.

“While we were putting plans in place, you couldn’t prepare for 2024 with 100 per cent certainty, but now we can start to enact those things.

“We can start having those discussions with our coaches, our players, staff, sponsors and members and look to obviously recruit.”

Hoers senior coach Wayne Schultz and general manager of coaching Ash Close are both well known to the NFNL having earned Team of the Year honours during stints at Northcote Park.

They’ll be joined this season by club great John Matthew, who was football manager in Northcote Park’s 1999, 2000 and 2012 premiership years and was an assistant coach in Heidelberg’s 2016 premiership.

Meanwhile, Old Paradians members voted to leave the VAFA in September.

After appointing a new coach the day of the vote, Raiders president Simon Vincent said the club could now ramp up preparations in earnest.

“We had 10 minutes in front of the clubs and I focused on what value we could bring to the league.

“We got asked a couple of questions we were expecting, such as proximity to other clubs and a women’s team, then we sat out in the foyer for a nerve-racking 10 minutes.

“We heard an encouraging round of applause and I thought that means we’re in, they invited us back in and made it official.

“There’s a real buzz around the club at the moment, we announced our coach Ben Turner (on Wednesday) and now we can sit down and have more meaningful conversations with, not just prospective players, but also people who are looking to help off the field.”

Yep, forgot there was 11 sides. Carry on.
I’m no fixturing expert..

But surely you could do 16 games

Play everyone once 10 games the do the rolling fixture

Ladder at that stage would be (for example)

Kilmore
Fitzroy
Old Eltham
Mernda
Epping
West H
Parade
Ivanhoe
Kinglake
Lalor
Reservoir

Each side is scheduled 3 double ups from each side of the ladder…

Parade would get double ups…
Kilmore, OE, Mernda / lalor, Kinglake, Ivanhoe..

Poor Kilmore having to double down each week and H. West have been kicked out 🤣🤣🤣🤣. It will be interesting to see how NFNL balance the draw there will be winners and loosers but such is life. 11 teams means you can't have a perfect draw. But so long as the expected strong teams don't get lalor/reservoir twice while the mid range miss out it could work out

While it's always easy to bash the league, you have to sit back and admit the league has done a brilliant job at slowly aquiring clubs in the past decade which has been mutually succesful for both clubs and league.
Each club had it's own predicament but from afar this is how it's paned out in hindsight.

Banyule - Struggled to retain it's juniors in the VAFA. Clearly the most succesful side since coming across. It's extremely impressive with what they have done in such a short time. Looks like they will be settled in D1 for the medium term now.

Kilmore - Struggled in the RDFL winning only a handful of games in it's last 5 years in the league. The NFL nabbed them and the juniors across and it's been a sustained success. The club seems happy with the move and has a solid group of kids coming through.

Old Eltham - From all reports they were really struggling for numbers in the VAFA and their viability appeared shaky at times in it's old league. Since coming across they've steadily improved and are now contending in D3.

Kinglake - Have been a welcome addition in their first year and had a very strong H&A season. Provides the NFL with some character and uniqueness with the away trips up the hill. AFLOE has been an absolute mess in the past 24 months and I'm sure the Lakers are enjoying the stablity of NFL football.

Ivanhoe and Old Parade will be great additions and are arguably in a better position than some of the above listed clubs when they first moved over.
More importantly the foundations of 3 divisions of football are now set in stone with 11 sides. The league has it's future sorted in the event a side or two sadly falls over, they have the numbers to cover it.

Compare that to the WRFL who have continually lost sides and are now in a precarious position with Div 3 and it's struggling clubs.

Banyule have been a good club well run and good juniors. Banyule got to a stage where they were losing guys to Macleod Heidelberg
Because money talks.

I think it will be a very to Ivanhoe expect to be out of Div 3 within years. If you know your footy their is roughly 10 ex Ivanhoe playing at other clubs and if they can entice them back watch out they will rise very quickly

The NFNL do a great job. The league is run very well. It’s not perfect but neither is the AFL. They do a great job overall.

Love this, as teams who would finish 5th or 6th would feel hard done by maybe if it was a top 4 with a lop sided fixter versing the 'harder' teams twice apposed to getting lalor and rezza twice. No brainer imo

The issue is its always going to be a fine line with teams coming and going.

Obviously, the ideal number is 30, but with clubs at varying levels of sustainability, its always going to be tough.

Ivanhoe look a great addition. I know the league has spoken with Bulleen Temp in recent years but believe eastern is their preferred destination if they depart VAFA.

The VAFA is in some trouble long term. There will be more clubs departing in the next 24 months.

VERY Random thought - would something like this work as the comp grows / support more even games in each division?

An 8 team comp / top 4 finals / 16 rounds of H&A / one up one down promotion / mid year bye if req

Based on that it would look like in 2024:

Div 1 (8 teams)
Heidelberg
Bund
Nth H
Mont
Hurst
Greens
Mac
Elth

Div 2 8 (teams)
Banyule
West P
Whitt
DC
ST Marys
South M
Wats
Laurimar

Div 3 (8 teams)
Thommo
NP
PH
Lower P
Epping
Mernda
Kinglake
Eltham C

Div 4 (7 teams / 14 H&A rounds)
West H
Kilmore
Stars
Res
Lalor
Parade
Ivanhoe

Salary caps could stay the same but spread over 16 and 14 H&A rounds?

Just a random way to start some Friday chatter.

Chump.
