Top 3 player is a massive call. Who’s the two players you would have above him? some high quality players in this division
Sam Gilmore, Jai Burns, Patty Farrant, Brent Macaffer, Taylor-Egan, Tim Ellis, Nick Paton Kain Proctor, Zac Cuppens just to rattle off a few. He must be a jet to be above some of those names.

Mernda look to be moving through the gears well at the moment with a couple more to add to the current playing squad.

Epping too good in the end for us today and with many more scoring shots the 31 points probably a more realistic result rather than the 4 point deficit mid-way through the last. So congratulations to the Pingers on the result and thanks for the hospitality 👍

We learned a lot today and will look to keep growing in this competition with some key players to return in coming weeks after our next bye.

Looked very impressive Chump. Well structured and skillful. Watched them against your mob earlier in the year (where you thoroughly deserved the win BTW), but they've certainly gone up a notch or few since then. Got a birds eye view of why they went within a minute or two of promotion last season.

I'm sure our boys also learned a thing or two on the weekend, as we too find our feet each week we play.

Hope everything is okay at the Turtle Dome.

Run home is scary, might miss finals completely. Run home is - Kinglake (beat by 6 goals) , Mernda (beat by 8pts) , Epping (beat by 2 pts), Ivanhoe (beat by 5 goals), HW (lost by 3 pts), OP (lost by 4pts). Turtles v Ivanhoe and v Epping will be 8 point games to determine 4th and 5th I think.

Ivanhoe who are on the same points play HW, Lalor, Kinglake and Reservoir in the run home.

Epping also on same points play HW, Kinglake and Lalor.

Mernda sends timely reminder of its class, handing Old Paradians a first home defeat

Mernda has surged to the top of the NFNL Division 3 ladder after handing Old Paradians its first home defeat, a timely reminder of the Demons’ power.

Mernda has risen to the top of the NFNL Division 1 ladder for the first time this season.
With arguably their best performance of the year, the Demons claimed the top rung with a 28-point victory over Old Paradians at Garvey Oval.

It’s the first time the Raiders have been knocked off at home and the first loss with inspirational ruckman Sam Gilmore in the side.

The 11.12 (78) to 7.8 (50) triumph sending a timely reminder to the competition why Mernda remain premiership favourites.

“We were playing for top spot today and we believe we’re the best side in the competition, so we wanted that spot back, which was a bit of motivation,” coach Rob Fletcher said.

“A lot of things didn’t go our way for long periods, 10-15 minutes where we didn’t score and we’re a fairly high-scoring team.

“We stuck to our structures and kept grinding away, it was a bit of a dog-fight today and I’m really proud of the way the boys played.

“I think every game you play now, third division is so strong, you’ve got to be up and about every week and if not you come unstuck.”

Both teams were coming off big wins, Old Paradians by 97 points over Reservoir and Mernda by 108 over Lalor.

The Demons settled the quicker, taking a 13-point lead into quarter-time.

Inaccuracy cost the visitors a bigger half-time lead, going into the main break with a 17-point margin despite kicking 2.5 for the term.

Last year’s grand finalist kept the pedal down in the third term and opened up a match-winning 32-point lead at three-quarter-time.

And despite being down two rotations on the bench, Mernda still finished the stronger.

Co-captain Matt Golledge is racing the clock to be fit for next week after suffering an ankle injury, while key defender Riley Vincent will miss at least the next fortnight with concussion.

“We lost two before half-time so to keep fighting was awesome,” Fletcher said.

“We thought we had control of the game, just some of our decision-making and disposal kept them in the game, so we were never nervous at any stage.”

Team of the Year star Kai Turner was named best-on-ground in the win, while Josh Mazzarella, Jayden Bell and Lachie Taylor also impressed.

Bryce Kimuliatis and Matt Bawden both booted three goals, Kimuliatis sitting equal second in the league goalkicking race.

“I thought Kai was really good, I thought our back six went really well,” Fletcher said.

“Our ruckman Lachie, we got smashed in the hitouts but we won the clearances, so our midfield did an awesome job and the big fella up forward was great as well.

“You do (have a plan against Gilmore) a little bit, we know he likes to hit the back out the back a bit, so we were wary of that.

“He’s a bloody great footballer, one of the best I’ve seen, so he’s great for Parade and great for third division.”

For Paradians, Kyle O’Sullivan, Nick Kolotylo, Tom Cooper and Blair Healy held their heads high.

The result sees a three-way tie at the top of the ladder, with Mernda leading Fitzroy Stars and Old Paradians on percentage.

Epping, Ivanhoe and Old Eltham Collegians are then locked together fighting for fourth and fifth with Kilmore only a game back in seventh.

In other results, Epping leap-frogged Ivanhoe into the top-five with a 31-point win and Fitzroy Stars edged Old Eltham by seven points.

Heidelberg West was too strong for Lalor in a 51-point win and Kilmore smashed Kinglake by 69 points.

Yes agree Mappa and we had a few things fall our way that day to help us get the 4 points.

I feel they are the club house leaders at the moment, but what a great comp with so many teams competitive and looking for a place in the finals.

IF you make the final 5, have some luck, get your best squad together - then still wide open. Great year of footy.

Cafari and Nolan overseas at the moment, luckily Gilmore seems to be prioritising the raiders over european adventures. Travelling is rampant this year, makes results interesting all over the league with players in and out constantly.
Back in the good old days, it was footy all year long unless you were injured, and still then, you were at the club. Change of times!

It’s every where. Every league. European trips galore.

Yup - all teams and all leagues. We had a lot last year who were a bit older (25-30) and we have 8 away now that are a bit younger (21 - 25), but that how it goes and to be expected these days. Hopefully all back next year and ready to give it a big crack together in our second year in the comp :)

Blokes aged between 18 and 30 locked down for 2 years, god forbid they realise there's more to life than missing a couple games of local footy and travel while they're still young!

Mernda co-captain Angus Mills speaks about his second knee injury in as many years

Injuries don’t come much more devastating than a repeat ACL tear in your comeback game but Mernda’s Angus Mills isn’t giving up on the game.

“That’s just footy”.

Mernda co-captain Angus Mills isn’t ready to hang up the boots just yet after re-rupturing his ACL against Lalor a fortnight ago.

In his comeback game after more than 12 months on the sidelines, the Demons star devastatingly suffered a repeat injury in the same knee.

He faces a second round of surgery and another year out of the game.

How his knee recovers and his work commitments will be key factors in whether he pulls on the blue and red again.

Mills went down in a tackle, a Bloods opponent knocking his knee in a seemingly innocuous collision.

“I started alright, got tackled and tried to step through it and he hit the outside of my knee,” Mill said.

“I spoke the surgeon and he said it could have happened to anyone, consider yourself unlucky, that’s just football.

“Right now you’re like ‘I never want to play again’, you hate the game but it’s not the game’s fault.

“You question yourself, ‘have you done everything you can to get yourself right to come back’.

“I think (I will play again), it’s difficult with work to decide if I come back but I’ll get through the next 12 months with rehab and see where I am.

“It’s hard because I’m not going to have surgery for a few weeks which puts the return toward the end of next year and may push into the following year depending on the recovery.

“I could be 18 months away from playing again, it’s a long time.”

Mills will have surgery in three weeks and faces a couple of months off work as a result.

The support he’s received from his clubmates and the wider footy community has been significant.

“The boys, it’s a great club, everyone immediately got around me,” he said.

“All four teams at the club, the committee, the members, past players, you feel really supported.

“I run my own business as a plumber, last year I had two months off and I’ll probably have another two or three months off.

“It’s hard, the people you build your business around – builder and your clientele – they don’t really like waiting so that’s the only hard part.”

It’s an especially hard pill to swallow as Mernda chase a premiership.

Mills would likely have played an important role in the club’s push to end its 12-year drought.

A breakthrough 2022 season saw the rising star earn Division 3 Team of the Year honours on the wing.

Frustratingly he’s played just two full games since.

Despite his injury setbacks, Mills has been proud of the Demons’ development has made in recent years.

“It is to great to be a part of, I’ve been here for 10 years and the majority we haven’t been going well,” he said.

“The last two years we’ve really turned things around and that’s a credit to the boys who continue to turn up, put in the hard work and you get the reward.

“The coaches too, they’ve put in a lot of hard work, Fletch (Rob Fletcher) for four years – without that investment we probably aren’t were we are.

“Fletch can be hard around the edges but he’s soft on the inside, he’s a great person and he’s been great for Mernda.

“He’s built our culture, we wouldn’t have retained as many players if not for him either, he has a great relationship with everybody – Kingy (Jarrod King) too, he’s a great coach.”

Mernda currently sits on top of the ladder and will be aiming to go one-step further this season after grand final heartbreak in 2023.

The Demons expect to regain veteran leaders Brent Marshall, Michael Evans and possibly Team of the Year ruckman Billy Morrison from long-term injuries in the coming weeks.

For Mills, he’s sure it will be no trouble finding a role to keep himself invested.

“I’ll find a role, we expect Nipper Marshall back so maybe I’ll help the mids out at the breaks,” he said.

Carlton legend anthony koutoufides son is playing down at Reservoir for the remainder of the season!!!

Many older heads getting around in Div 3? Haven’t played for a while and wanting to have a run before it’s too late.

Massive outs these two blokes, Nolan in superb form over past month! Is W Gilmore still about or overseas as I had heard
