Nic Nat Top 5 Eagle B&F

Disgrace really. Overrated to the extreme, does one or two good things a game and people go stupid. The number 9 has gone from the hardest worker in the game and a brilliant football brain to the polar opposite.

Why do people think Nic Nat's year was horrible? We were first in hitouts, surely that is a sign of a potent ruck duo? In the second half of the year he got very little time in the ruck as Cox's fitness was back up to par and he took most of the burden, with Nic Nat playing around the ground more. Given that, it is no surprise that he actually does have a few good stats going his way:

- 2nd in contested possessions (behind Sandilands)
- 13th in hitouts (as a number 2 ruckman)
- 3rd in tackles
- 2nd in bounces (behind Jolly)
- 1st in clearances

It wasn't a horrible year by him, he just didn't dominate as much as he did in the first half of the year once Cox took over. No slight on him, he just is being worked into a full-time ruck role. I think he suffers from the high expectations from the first part of the year. Was there a ruckman his age who was better?

I didn't watch much West Coast this year but didn't Dean Cox miss games, struggle with injury and basically play backup ruck to NicNat this year?

No you obviously didn't. Naitanui got limited game time after Cox got his body right early in the season. Cox still ended up averaging 17 disposals and 23 hitouts (which is servicable not great). Naitanui ended up being about 20th in the AFL for contested ball despite playing second to Cox.

As I've posted elsewhere on this topic - Naitanui has played all 22 games for the Eagles in 2010 (a lot of AFL listed big men his age are struggling to get just one game), has improved his averages in every statistical category bar tackles (just a drop of 0.5 per game, but still averaged 3.4 per game, which is good for a ruckman, particularly of his age), and established a Champion Data Player Ranking score average 14 points higher than in his first season (one of the biggest improvers in the league in that particular stat), showing that his overall statistical impact is much greater. Obviously statistics aren't everything, but there's nothing there to say he hasn't improved on his first season. He might not have been dominant or pulling highlight reel moments out every week (if he was, he'd probably be incorrectly labelled "all flash" a la Dale Thomas once upon a time), but what do people realistically expect from a second-year ruckman?

Also, just out of interest...

Didn't see a lot of him, but from what I did see his tap-work was excellent, as was his follow up work.

I assume that the coaches have key indicators for him on which the votes would have been based. Played all 22 games and it's no great shock to see him finish that high in the counting.

When you think about it its not very surprising. We had 4 players play 22 games. One of them was ebert. With the eagles B+F you get points basically just for playing (0-5) for every game. Nic nat would of pulled a few 5's early on in the year. Got a lot of effective hit outs and a lot of contested possessions and clearances.
He was 2nd at our club for contested possessions and 4th for tackles

This year if you played all 22 games all you really needed to do was be an average player every game and you would of made top 5. Nic nat did his job in the ruck well. He just didn't do so well in the other areas people will judge him on eg, total possessions, marks and goals.

Also whoever put the champion data points up. Im not sure how many points taking an epic screamer, or taking the ball out of the ruck and bombing it inside 50 would count for in champion data but i feel it'd count for more in the B+F.
Round 4 against essendon he ended up with 13 possies 1 mark and a goal Would you believe he was BOG? because he was. Dont reckon he woulda got that many champion data points from that.

Looking at the Ranking Scores from that game, Naitanui (117) was statistically the fourth most impactful player on the ground, behind Jobe Watson (124), Matt Priddis (120) and Dean Cox (119). He had 7 Inside 50s, 5 clearances, 11 contested possessions (the Ranking Score values and weights forward-moving and contested disposals above all others) and 5 tackles for the game, which shouldn't be underestimated, particularly for a second-year ruckman. It was statistically Naitanui's 2nd-best performance of the year, behind what he did in Round 7 vs. Hawthorn (22 hitouts, 19 possessions, all but one of which were contested).

Amazing stat - 71.76% of Naitanui's possessions are contested.

I probably could have come top 5 in the eagles B&F this year.

Don't worry Esti, i'm sure your second year ruckman Zac Clarke might scrape into the top 5 for his club this year, and by that I mean East Perth :)

The Eagles Voting system i think is a little different,It works on games played, roles played ect i think also it is a 5,4,3,2,1 Voting slip from various coaching staff.I guess the merit is that it stops midfielders dominating and gives hard workers an opportunity AKA Waters.
