Bont is an awesome player no doubt but he sure as hell isn't the only one in the comp. To say there is no question about him and next best in the comp is definitely trolling at best or possibly delusional/ blinkers on at worst

I think there's a clear gap between Bont and the next best, thinking about performances over the past few years. Heeney, Gawn, Petracca, Butters etc very good but not at Bont's level - who's close to Bont?

There's a group of match-winners that are more or less on par depending on how many actual matches they win off their own boot each season.

Bontempelli and Nick Daicos are both easily in that group.

I imagine this thread was bumped as Daicos was on the losing team tonight, but you don't get 25+ contested possessions in a match without putting in a very honest shift - he did far better than that though; he threatened to win the game himself at points.

Great player.

Great player.

27 in the end which is good enough for top 20 since the stat has been tracked & the same for his 16 clearances. With no De Goey/Mitchell he's had to play much more of an inside role & against Adelaide in particular his ball use was poor, but he's adapting to it more and more each week.

Judd with skills

And not gifted a Brownlow (3 votes in a 10 goal loss) or Neale with a 15 posesh one. Embarrassing and makes the award worth nothing
Even if you're trying to pump up his tyres, that's an awful comparison.

Judd was 6'3 with lightning speed and power out of stoppage, and then post OP changed his game to a big bodied mid who thrived on contest, shovelling it out to the outside ball users.

In terms of how Daicos plays the game and what his role is, he's closer to GAJ or even Boomer in terms of style.

Nick needs to get his side over the line to be in the same bubble as Ablett. Bulldogs were lazy on both Daicos leaving them too much room which lead to two goals, and from memory several open shots on goal. Another from poor discipline.

Give Daicos attention and he's not even in discussion as top 10 of all time. To suggest so gives a great disservice to so many exceptional players currently playing the game.

Geez he’s so good to watch. Combination of vision, kicking and speed is probably on par with the best we’ve seen.

But the diving is heckin'g hard to watch. The reaction to the Duryrea accidental elbow was almost Rance like. Its not winning him any fans.

^ fixed it for you ;)
That’s completely fine too. Just feels like he’s an outlier in terms of “best player(s) in the league conversation”, in that he often feels the need to play for his free kicks or exaggerate contact. It’s essentially gamesmanship and I’m sure the Collingwood fans love it, but as a neutral trying to show appreciation for players, it’s certainly a hard watch

Completely agree. Daicos is one of the biggest stagers currently playing, including when he collapses his legs to draw in the back free kicks - painful to watch.

And the all important:

Age:
Bont - 28
Daicos - 21

The title of the thread is (at least for me) unserious. Daicos isn't the goat and would not even have a claim at it until his career finishes which could be 10-15 years away.

However, surely we can appreciate what he is doing at 21 years of age? He's in the discussion for top 5 best players in the league, very likely would have won a Brownlow last year if not for injury, and he's just recently ticked over 50 games. And yet all I (feel like I) hear is "he's not as good as" xyz player who is older and more experienced than him (with the exception of Walsh who is still 2 years older from memory but is most comparable).

He's not the GOAT. And he most likely will not end up being the GOAT (not that anyone can agree in who is anyway, so it's an arbitrary discussion at best). Turns out it's pretty hard to become the GOAT... Of anything really. And then even when you are, there's still people who don't agree you are... So... Yeah. LeBron/Jordan anyone? 😎

So yeah, he's not the GOAT and likely will never be. But he's just... Good. Better than a player this age and experience has been for a bit. And yeah, Pies fans love him and want him to have our babies. Please remember our last hyped up prospects Matt Sharenberg and Nathan Freeman did a grand total of Jack squat for Collingwood. So it's nice to have one who is over performing the hype level for once.
If we are really super biased and you think Daicos sucks, then please do forgive us for barracking for our club and best player 🤣. As though any team with a generational talent doesn't talk them up and froth them any chance they get (Harley Reid is how many games in and this is ALREADY happening??). Heck even North fans can get excited about Sheez, and I reckon JHF looks and plays like a young Nathan Buckley. There's some amazing talents coming through, and a few of them may be seen as once in a lifetime types by the end of their careers. Nick is one, already, for us.

If you want to turn this in to a Daicos sucks thread that's your prerogative but if you just imagined for a minute this kid was on your team hopefully you can see what our fussing is about.

Thanks for attending my TED talk.

I never said Nick Daicos sucks.

Bont showed Nick how to get the job done when the game was in the balance.
Otherwise pretty good game by Nick. He has no mates whatsoever who can go with him for support poor kid was buggered in the last quarter
Maybe at 25 he could carry a team for 4 quarters. He was supreme the first 3 quarters and then faded badly. Bont wasn't as good first half but his team mates were more competitive until he took over than the other Pies were in Q4.

Daicos is more death by a thousand cuts whereas Bont can be an actual colossus for a quarter or two. And you need the body strength/stature to be able to do the latter in my opinion.

The title of the thread is stupid and so is the thread now. It's like starting something saying can Curnow kick 1000 goals and then jumping in here and ripping on him when he does anything remotely negative.

Loving the Carlton attention, maybe we can splice together Nick's ball use last night with Walsh's on Thursday night. I mean Walsh appeared to be playing for Port such was his precision in hitting their defenders on the tit...and he has Curnow and McKay forward. Daicos had Markov and Frampton....
