Oh goody, another stat.

Does it actually mean anything?

What other variations have we historically seen from winning and losing teams?
So you were happy with the Pies defensive running and the holes in defence? Was pretty apparent to me the Pies were outworked which is what the numbers showed and confirmed what was plain to see.

Note in the pf both sides ran the same distance. Pretty big change.

He has similar numbers to Jake Lloyd’s 2019 but with worse kicking efficiency, and 2 fewer kicks per game.

Not sure if anyone thinks Jake Lloyd is in contention to be the goat…

I'll bite. If you played a team of Daicos' vs a team of Lloyds the former would win by 20 goals. Lloyd is one of the least damaging players of the modern era, I highly doubt any opposition coach puts any time into nullifying him

Does that still make Nicky the GOAT like Fadge is claiming or alluding to??

Most of this thread is discussion on Nicky being or close to the best player the game has ever seen like the OP stated and has been arguing for.

My goodness. Somebody actually brought facts and logic to this 66-page troll and bait fight. Appreciate your efforts in getting this back to a serious football discussion.

And if you put a team of Daicos' vs a team of GAJ's I genuinely don't know if the team of Daicos' would ever get the ball... Which is really what this thread is all about.

Daicos is weak in the contest, but is absolutely elite on the outside and is one of the best decisions makers we've seen with ball in hand. A very good runner too.

If you think that's controversial or contradictory to my ranking of him as 8th best player in the league... Well okay, I disagree.

Fyfe and Danger were the best players in the comp at stages and their kicking was always shite, rest of their game was so good it didn't diminish their dominance.

Darcy Moore is a poor one on one defender vs the best key forwards of the comp. He's still a very good Key defender though, in the top 5 in the comp imo.

Sam Taylor the opposite, his rebound and kicking is pretty meh, but his defensive game is absolutely elite. Best KPD in the game imo.

The players who I have in the GOAT discussion did not have these weaknesses. GAJ simply had no flaws in his prime.
If you are truly weak in the contest you will not make it at AFL level, it's as simple as that. You can certainly argue that he is not, as yet, a hard nut player , like a Joel Selwood. Like all young players he has areas of his game to work on and with his work ethic, he will.

Have no problem with posters saying they don't rate him but when gutless keyboard heroes who obviously never achieved anything in their lives throw around the words 'squib' it is a reflection on their own sad lives and a comment on themselves. It's like the Trump schtick " If you are a liar, accuse everyone else as being a liar to deflect attention".

I would never call any AFL player a squib as I know that if I was ever pitted against them, they would make a fool of me.

It's more than fair to rate body of work when ranking your top 10.

I'd be interested to see who your top 10 is, and then which of them you think a coach would take ahead of Daicos:
A) For 2024, and
B) For the next 5 years
That's a fair task, Fadge.

Even for 2024, to pick a top 10 is fraught with danger as some may fall off a cliff as the season progresses.

For the present moment I would say
1 Bontimpelli 2. Petracca 3 Toby Green 4. C Curnow 5.J Cameron 6. Sam Taylor 7. Butters 8 Walsh 9 Neale 10. May

with all of Gulden, Daicos, Rozee, De Goey, Weitering, Gawn, Liberatore, Merrett, Serong, C Cameron, T Miller, Tom Green, Anderson, Rowell knocking on the door.

In 5 years it may include Sheezel and that other young North gun Wardlaw, Horne Francis, Butters , Rozee, Reid, Daicos, Ugle-Haggen Curnow, Walsh, Darcy Gulden ......... but who knows?

Even us Carlton folk would acknowledge that Sam Walsh isn't top 10 in AFL , but hey, we all have our own opinions.
Fadge said Harry McKay is not top 100 which is discussion for another day

So a sample size of.... two games.

By the way, where can you access the stats for distance covered by player/team? I wouldn't mind checking them out.

Interesting you have Curnow, Butters, Walsh and Taylor in there, when their respective bodies of work are arguably inferior or at best similar to that of Daicos?

Yep, because why would a coach want their best user of the ball and decision maker setting up the play when they have the opportunity to do so?
Thats all fine but it shouldn't count as an uncontested possession.
You can't compare stats against other players when he is getting a 10 stat advantage by taking the cheapies from the defensive goalsquare.
