Why, are they having cap trouble or unable to sign their youngsters otherwise? That's the only reason the Bowes deal happened. If it doesn't apply here, they'll just eat his salary.
Probably cos they backended a bunch of deals till now when they aren’t in contention like Haynes to fit all their players in during their finals run

And unfortunately got no flag to show for it

Correct. Club officials have repeatedly said the cap is now under control. It's only one year, and if Himmelberg does exercise his free agency, there's definitely no $ problems, and the competition for his spot is also gone (with a couple of younger players in the wings). He's 7th for marks per game this season, despite being subbed out injured twice (once almost at the start) and subbed in for a third game, so he's back in form after getting over last year's health problems.

Do you think there is any chance we sign him for say $200k for 2025, and pay him say $759k in 2024, $450k in 2025? Or just wait till the end of 2024, or agree to pay about $300k of his 2024 salary to play somewhere else.

Gws 1st and Haynes for dogs second and we take all backended salary? Surely helps with keeping Himmelberg.

For our 4th….not paying over 1mil a year for a player who is going to spend half the season at Box Hill for a 20 pick upgrade. Plus the Bulldogs 2nd is the points we need for McCabe

This is how the Herald Sun described his situation in their 2023 rich list:

NICK HAYNES

GWS GIANTS, 31

$850,000-$950,000

The fattest part of his five-year contract kicks in this season and next, meaning Haynes will earn the best part of $1 million annually in 2023-24. While that seems like overs, it is a heavily back-ended deal which helped alleviate some pressure on the cap when he signed in 2019. Raised as trade bait last year, but no dice.
[italics mine]
Since he's on around $900k this year, if he's earning "the best part of $1m annually in 2023-24", that suggests to me that his contract next year is worth about $1m.

But it is only one year before he's OOC. And perhaps Haynes could be attracted by a guarantee that his AFL career would be extended. Maybe 2 years with triggers for a 3rd? In which case its not hard to imagine how a trade deal could be mutually beneficial for the club and the player.

In terms of the trade value... What about GWS' pick 8 + Haynes for North's first rounder from Port (~pick 17). In this hypothetical, North takes on all of the salary and gets much needed reinforcements for its depleted backline.

Pick 8 AND Haynes for Pick 17?

Jeez I’ve read some stupid stuff on Big Footy - but seriously…

It’s far less stupid than paying a million dollars for someone to play in the VFL for most of a year.
It’s also a better deal for GWS than any of those suggested so far in this thread.

Sorry you wouldn’t pay $1m once and then a year or 2 at a much reduced rate which could include an off field role for a proven quality player with versatility as our young KP players develop? You wouldn’t do it to upgrade pick 31 to pick 10 to get the extra first prior to the McCabe bid we are desperate for? You wouldn’t do it because you want to keep a pick that is purely for bid matching? Matching is easy in context if McCabe goes at 18, that’s 985 points less 197 discount = 788. We have dogs 3rd = 273 so 500 left which is pick 36. You don’t think we can acquire and end of second round pick somehow?

Let's get one thing clear.

GWS are not Gold Coast. They are not throwing in one of the first round picks in any potential trade involving Haynes so they can get his contract off their books.

That makes no sense whatsoever with him out of contract at the next season.

If.he goes to Hawthorn, it's just likely a direct swap for the Hawks second round pick (with maybe GWS chucking back a later round pick)

You ain't dealing with amateurs at GWS, unlike Gold Coast.

Why would we do that trade? Haynes only makes sense to improve our draft hand not weaken it.

He has been an reliable AA calibre player for a while now.

GWS are simply not going to pay another club with a valuable draft pick to take him and contract off their books. They could easily still absorb it for one more season.

Heck even your 2nd round pick this season is probably unders for a player of Haynes ability.

What you are saying may be right but unusually for BF, we can both be right and our points can be mutually exclusive. I am simply saying without draft improvement Hawks would have no interest in him at that age.

He's been mediocre at best for 2 years now Elmer
