No need to so harsh on StKilda.

Well it wasnt Riewoldt Milne or Sneider. Kosi had to ruck as Gardiner got injured and McQualter was on Shaw. StKildas other options for half forward where injured in Armitage and Steven. So that left Eddy. Gilbert moved forward after half time on Maxwell and turned the game .

Who did he play on thst was so amazing? What did his efforts consist of exactly a mark and touching a rolling ball.

in fairness, his 1 possession in that last quarter was a good one

Not sure why Saints fan would put Maxwell down. Take him off the ground in the last Q of the 2010 GF and St Kilda probably win. Ask any captain what they would want to do in that role and saving a grand final would be pretty high on the list if they were backline players. Maxwell twice summed up the game late in the last Q and did what no other player did. Had Milne attacked the ball like Maxwel, Saints probably win. Had any defender summed up the moment like Maxwell did and Davis probably doesn't kick his goal.

Yet, not many are willing to give him credit for his efforts in the 2010 GF. Selective attention?
After the 2010 Prelim, Scarlett's excuse was that he hadn't seen pressure like that. Was he effectively saying he was shit house under pressure? Would I be justified saying that couldn't handle the heat and therefore is a fair weather player?
When your back line structure falls down and players start deviating from the plan, it affects where everybody stands or runs too when the ball is coming in. Collingwood often spoke of their back six unit. If one or two players struggle to contain forwards, the unit struggles. We all know that Hawkins got a hold of Reid that day, so the onus was on players like Maxwell to try to get to that contest to help out a struggling Reid. Playing with fire coz that released Johnson.
Oh yeah, Reid was on one leg, Hawkins beat him.Hawkins' performance was overrated. True?

This is all I hear from Pies Supporters and King Eddie himself.... but didn't the pies "honour" the top draft pick every year with the #35 because of the sacrifice he made in puling out of a gf because he didn't think he could get through a game?? After the flag all we heard was how unselfish it was and that's why we dedicate the #35 to a new draftee. Yet 12 months later they take Ben Reid into a gf who clearly should not have played carrying the injury from the Prelim against the hawks! I assume the club would be filthy with him for being "selfish"?? Oh no they will just use it as an excuse instead!

It's like all the God Bothering Sportsmen.

When they win it's always "thanks to God for making it happen"

but when they lose, it's never "you're a douche God, it's your fault i lost"

Regardless of Reid or the club's reasons for playing him, he wasn't right. He wasn't right, he played, he got thumped, end of story. IMO he shouldn't have played but the match committee probably thought they had nothing else. Don't know, wasn't there.
Presti hadn't played enough footy so he was shot anyway. I suspect that Mick was pushing to pick him but he knew he was gone. Reid passed a fitness test but as we know, no fitness absolutely mirrors the game.

The difference Brown was missed 2010 with a knee so we had no player on the list to replace Reid. Reid was also AA in 2011 and arguably our most valuable player (along with Cloke). The same could also be said for taking Jolly into the GF as a he was even more injured than Reid. At the end of the day it cost us but we didn't really have any choice in the matter imo (except Cameron Wood lol).

fwiw I suspect there were quite a few Geelong players who weren't 100% in the prelim loss to us the year before. In the end you have to make a judgment call on whether the injured players were more valuable playing at 80% than the potential replacements.

They thought he would be ok get through the game, but during the game the injury got worse hence why he was selected.

Presti also didn't play in the lead up to the GF so he was taking the spot off a player who didn't deserved to be dropped, we had no adequate Reid replacement at that time

Beams did pull out in 2011 GF after trying to get through in the PF and not firing a shot.

Take Hackwell out means another player would have taken his spot, and that player`s output may have been greater than relying on saving the GF where we would have been further in front than having to rely on a desperate smother

Yeah and perhaps this other player may have been responsible for a hole in the zone that allowed the Saints to get through and kick a few more in the first half. This game is fun for everyone.

Speaking objectively about Maxwell's output across his career. He was a very effective player for about 2 seasons, serviceable for the rest, except for 2013 season where he was terrible. The fact he was given AA and awarded AA in his 2 best seasons probably inflates his reputation to a level that is undeserved. Nevertheless his career and captaincy have been an overwhelming success especially considering his talent base.

Who would replace Reid down back? N. Brown, he was injured, L. Brown, I'm pretty sure he was carved up by Hawkins a few weeks ago, Keeffe, he was very inexperienced and was playing as a forward anyways.

No, the hole in the back half is Hackwell, you know, the defender that can`t defend, the rebounder that can`t create. the loose man that needs no opponent to be recognised

What? Ha ha ha. No defender could have stopped Davis that moment. Especially Maxwell.

Love a poster that uses sarcasm to put down his own premiership captain. Bianconerri all you posting here is showing is you have little idea. Maxwell is much better than that. Ask Bucks if you need a 2nd opinion

Which player on the list would that be? Do you realise only 5 Collingwood players had more disposals than Maxwell in that game? In fact only 3 had more SC points.

In the drawn GF only two Collingwood players received norm smith medal nominations, as Hayes and Goddard were thought the best players on the ground.

D.Thomas and Maxwell were the two.

Can pick plenty of faults with Max's game, but the GF of 2010 was not one of them, when plenty of his team mates were second guessing themselves he was leading from the front.

Out of 198 games he got a few good games under his belt, the 2010 drawn GF (albeit important game) been one of them. then in the replay he could have cost us the Flag if Gilbert kicks straight.

Mate, that is a stretch. He kicks a goal and the ball goes back into the middle and the pattern of play changes. Who's to say that the Pies wouldn't have rallied, spewed that the goal was kicked and then rattled off 3 quick ones? Quite a few scenarios with coulda, shoulda, woulda written all over them. All bs.
