Nicky Winmar to take legal action against Newman, Scott and Sheahan

Another piece of evidence about what was being reported at the time. Over 50% of this post game report was dedicated to racial abuse that was being thrown at Nicky and Gilbert and other indigenous players at the time:

Collingwood vs St Kilda. The Aftermath

It is undeniable that racial taunts were being thrown at indigenous players on the day. It is also now undeniable that the media and football figures were talking about the racial implications at the time. It is also undeniable that Winmar had made reference to his skin colour (I’m black and I’m proud) at the time.

The real myth is the one spread by race baiters like Newman who falsely claim that “in April 93 everyone knew he has talking about heart or guts, it’s after all the PC lefties got to Nicky that he changed his story and made it about race later on”....

We know have video evidence from April 93 that that was NOT the case.

Also quite disheartening to see the AFL bosses at the time just claim, while they don’t like the crowd abuse, there’s really nothing much they can do about it.

If you ask me, this thread and all discussion in the media would be considered a win for the Podcast. Think it has elicited the desired outcome. Anyone who was previously interested in the podcast would be aware of the opinions and style of podcast you are going to hear and would not be shocked one iota to hear a discussion like that. Anyone that wasn't aware of the podcast now is. People who have taken umbrage at the comments were never likely to listen anyway, but they will pick up listeners as a result.

Whatever your opinion on the comments are, what could they possibly be sued for? Moreover, what could they possibly be sued for successfully? My somewhat uneducated guess is nothing...

Here’s a clip taken one week after that 1993 game. Winmar has walked out on St Kilda mid season looking for more money with a threat to stand down and go home to WA to play for the Eagles.
Do some fact checking. Nicky Winmar walked out immediately following that game for money...prodded by his manager.
The clip is one week after that 93 game and there’s no mention of racism... it’s all about money.
Look who’s the star - Peter Jess, the same guy who now threatens to sue.
1993 or 2020. It’s a bunch of white guys jabbering on about a black guy and how much money everybody gets.
This whole story is a sorry sorry exploitative mess.

From what I remember of the podcast, I don't think they said anything as a statement of fact - they were basically recounting their recollection of the events at the time and stating that they were different to the current narrative - and in their opinion, it has been hijacked by activists.

Reading a bit more of it here: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...y-Winmar-holding-shirt-not-racist-taunts.html - not sure Sheehan even did that - he seems pretty balanced to me. Newman though - well, as usual, he's just trying to remain in the headlines/be controversial.

Sorry, look at the clip my post #176 above. It was filmed the day of and the days after the match and clearly states that Winmar was the recipient of racial abuse from the man himself, commentators and AFL chiefs. It’s irrefutable evidence that shows race was clearly an issue on that exact day.

I'd wager they'll want an apology.
Doesn't really hold up, you can't sue for an apology if its deemed they just had a different view of the events. I haven't read quotes or heard any audio, but reading it doesn't sound like there's any candid false defamation here.

I don’t dispute racial abuse was rampant that day. I’m a Pies fan and I know what went on at Victoria Park.
It was shameful and horrible.
The clip you showed has players after the game enjoying their win etc and then another bit spliced in, funnily enough narrated by Eddie McGuire of all people.
My clip is entirely taken 7 days after that game at Vic Park. By then Winmar has walked out & did so for 5 more weeks. That is irrefutable too.
That it was all about money is irrefutable as well. That was the biggest issue of the time directly involving Winmar. Big enough of an issue for him to walk out on his club.
Everything else is other people talking.

Harm to reputation sounds possible to me. Their lies impinge on Winmar’s character. And it’s not like the incident was inconsequential -been discussed for a long time now and there is the statue as well. It’s significant.

Are you trying to bait Newman? He did not say “everyone knew he was talking about guts”

Don Scott said “At the time lots of people were thinking he was talking about guts”

differences you’ve made. It was Scott not Newman.

You used the word “everyone” when he said “Lots of people”. Lots of people does not mean everyone. People may of thought he was talking about guts.

you used the word “knew”, when Don Scott said “thinking”. He didn’t say “we all have hard evidence and Know what Nicky was referring too

Mike Sheehan stated “only Nicky Winmar himself would know what the gesture meant”

It is undeniable that racial taunts were being thrown at indigenous players on the day.

None of these guys have claimed there weren’t racial taunts on the day.

"I haven't got any black friends, in fact I've never even met an aboriginal I do think we should give them more land ,just not my inner Melbourne. I study dreamtime at school. I hate racists"

"I haven't got any intelligent friends, in fact I've never even met a uni graduate. I do think all their arguments are wrong compared to my opinions. I read the Herald-Sun and watch Sky News. I've never read a book. I hate lefties."

Good luck getting Sam to apologise, he’s like Donald Trump, they get to a certain age and really don’t give a sh*t what they say or what anyone thinks.

He shouldn't have to.

I listened to the conversation and he hardly said anything about it, but I guess saying you are going to sue Don Scott won't get as much media attention.

Yeah I agree he said nothing wrong, nothing they uttered warrants legal action, we don’t want to go down the path of Americans, suing for anything and everything at the drop of a hat.

I don't think they'll sue. I think they'll want an apology.

To be honest, I probably would too if I was accused of bullshitting for 30 years for my own personal gain. Although probably not intended as a slur on Winmar - it's a pretty scathing accusation really.

Why would they lie?? What lies?

How mean spirited can 3 blokes get. Even if there was truth in what they are saying, all they are doing is rewriting the story to suit their own narrative. They are attempting to take away any ownership of one of the truly great moments in Indigenous history, and there have been precious few, and white wash it. There is not an indigenous person in Australia who is not proud of that moment and that photo. And now they want to take that away. Well done guys, real big of you.

This is an extraordinary attempt to gaslight the football community, to whitewash out one the most inspirational moments of the past 30 years, and erase an indigenous hero.

The fact that some are actually defending this tripe speaks volumes.

This is the crap indigenous people face day in, day out and it’s utter rubbish. Bigfooty should take a harsher role in policing and removing it too - it adds nothing to the sport or the website for this sort of dialogue to continue

Some of the dumbest people I met were fellow students at University.

Truth is a lot of people are now convinced it had nothing to do with race and it’s all an invention of the “PC SJWs” to divide society. That Winmar was one of the “good ones” who unfortunately was brainwashed by the “woke brigade”....

I think Waleed Aly (now that will trigger a lot of posters here) said it best when talking about Adam Goodes:

“It’s about the fact that Australia is generally a very tolerant society until its minorities demonstrate that they don’t know their place. And at that moment, the minute someone in a minority position acts as though they’re not a mere supplicant, then we lose our minds. And we say, ‘No, no, you’ve got to get back in your box here’.

“What happens is the minute an Indigenous man stands up and is something other than compliant, the backlash is huge and it is them who are creating division and destroying our culture. And that is ultimately what we boo. We boo our discomfort.”

Some will boo indigenous players now, some will defame then in the media or on social media, and some will attempt to rewrite history to show that racism wasn’t an issue.

Just for the benefit of doubters, Collingwood fans were calling him a petrol sniffer, that’s why he lifted his shirt and said he was black and proud of it.

Please tell me you're on big footy boasting about being a uni graduate.

Tell us the sequence of events you know so well.
