Nine/Foxtel have put forward a bid to the AFL for the football rights. If Seven/Ten alliance can't find an estimated $50 million to outbid them, the AFL is set to announce, Foxtel and Nine as the new rights holders as early as this week.

Great news well done AFL, you have assured that Aussie Rules will play second fiddle to a lesser competitor for another 4 years.

Meanwhile you all grow fat on your exhorbitant contracts and inside trading perks you filter through to your catering companies making us all pay top dollar when going to the footy.

Also buy going in with that Rugby loving Packer for another 4 years you have all but assured that Rugby League can catch up to the lead that was opened up over them by aussie rules.

My grandma and her nursing home mates could run the AFL better than these pigs. Aussie rules is succesful because it is the better game. These idiots have maximised nothing.

I agree with Bloodz on this, Seven has very few redeeming features. I think it's only the passing of time that's making evryone get soppy over Seven "coming home" to football.

Hmmm, had Shane Healy (general manager of 3AW) MC a sportsman's night at my cricket club last Thursday where he said Seven and Ten would get the rights, who do I believe???

The question mark will be regarding Saturday night footy in Brisbane, and to a lesser extent Sydney.
10 guaranteed prime time Saturday night football in Brisbane, are 9 going to do the same? If that's the case, then 9 getting the rights probably won't be a bad thing. But there's a lot of fine print about the deal that needs to be looked at before anyone decides whether it's good or not.

Although it's almost certain that Andy D will have sold the game out.

Of course Nine would be in bed with Foxtel. Because if Nine get the rights you need Foxtel in order to watch the footy (Qld). Foxtel has so much carp on it these days that without the footy they would lose thousands of customers IMNSHO.

Agree with what was written re:Robert KnoWalls, the only unifying factor in football..no matter who you barrack for you can't stand the guy (excepting Carlton diehards maybe).

I fail to see why they have to outbid them by $50 million. Seven have the last bid option and they only have to bid one dollar more than Nine to get the rights. The AFL can not do a thing about it as Seven paid for the last bid rights before the last rights deal. So long as Seven want the rights and are willing to bid more than Nine they win.

Yes actually.

If this is true and 9 is set to retain I will no hold out on saying it will eb the death of the game. Just gonna cut to the chase they won't show any games live to QLD except the Sunday Arvo 1. And within a couple of years, like with the NRL, will take over naming the draw to suit them and basically it will be a horrific experience.

Don't make a huge mistake AFL, FFS give it to 7/10!

Nice theory.

Reality check time.

Channel 7 don't need to outbid anyone. That's why they forked out $20m for the last rights of refusal for the previous and current bidding rounds. Even if they match 9's bid, they win.

7 hold the trump card, FTA coverage in the northern states against Rugby League.

It really boils down to whether Kerry Stokes wants to match the dollars being put on the table by 9/Foxtel. The recent court case will have absolutely no bearing on the outcome.

Last time around they simply chose not to do so based on financial reasons (weren't willing to pay over the odds).

Last but not least, Channel 9 have lost money on the AFL coverage since having the TV rights. Channel 10 only made a profit due to having the finals.
