One thing that the Lions fans might not be thinking about is the large number of southern 'invaders' (like this mad catter) who still follow their teams even though they now live in a different state.
Move people move to QLD from NSW than any other state...
whats your point??

Big bikkies

True but its not the end of it, and nine haven't even made thier offer yet.

It would be a disaster for QLD and NSW, where 50% of Australia's population lives

7/10 offered 120m 9 are believed will offer 135m, with much worst coverage FTA

I'm sorry, but can anyone else actually see C9 paying $135m for the rights then handing over their best game for the week to Foxtel for the areas covering 50% of the population.

The companies that shell out the big bucks for Friday night footy advertising want "national" exposure, if C9 were to do this they would not have a snow flakes chance in hell of turning a buck on their $135m a year.

I can see both the financial market and shareholders of PBL would being livid.

That is why they are getting a cashed up Foxtel to pay a large amount of the costs. Under an agreement with Nine, Foxtel would get 4 games as well as the oppoutunity to show Friday Night games in to QLD and NSW.

Nine will have the entire prime time Friday Night Football package to sell to advertisers where their product can get complete "national" exposure

AFL in AFL states
NRL in NRL states

7 would only be able to offer advertisers prime time coverage in AFL states (plus after 10:30pm slots in NSW/QLD)

Plenty of Sth Australians and esp Victorians are moving up here. My point is that they follow the AFL and as such would like to see their teams play on the TV. It aint Rocket surgery mon ami.

Having lived in the "northern markets" in the past - i know that deep down those in charge of Channel 9 despise the Australian code of football.
Weird isn't it? ...we live in Australia, call ourselves Australians but there are people who go out of their way to dislike the Australian game.
I just don't understand it... actually i do. When i grew up in sydney there was clever indoctrination from the beginning that "aussie rules" was for girls etc..
but when i watched matches the indoctrination didn't stand up to the facts. Players running at the ball full-steam with others coming from different angles
takes courage - no matter what channel 9 and their boys club says.

I always found it amusing flicking between channel 9 news and channel 10/7 to see which channel would give the best coverage of AFL in the sports section. Channel 9 was consistently the worst. If you were lucky they gave you the score just before the racing - with no footage. That compere - you could see it - (forgot his name but he comperes the rugby league state of origin)..hated talking about australian football.

Which Channel would i prefer see have afl rights?... well i think channel 7's record wasn't that good either. I remember that you were lucky if they showed replays of games at 2am... "Mate... it just doesn't rate... this re-run of nuns on the run rates really well at midnight" they say.... "we have to put it back to 2am due to the huge amount of people watching a 10th rerun of nuns on the run at midnight."

I don't prefer 9 to 7 - both are as bad as each other. In contrast - i feel channel 10 has at least taken risks and made an effort to promote the game. As long as 10 has the rights in some format i will be happy.

What ever happen there will be 3 games a weekend on fox footy, the AFL knows that foxtel is a long-term strategic partner and must guarantee a component of the deal is on sold to pay TV.

If for some reason the AFL go with all 8 games on free to air (channel 7 and 10) and virtually cut fox footy out of the loop then foxtel will wash it hands with AFL football and make fox footy into a Rugby union and soccer channel. The only way pay TV will be lost is it channel 7 and 10 sign contracts that stimulates that all 8 games will be shown live and in full through out the country.

Should be interested in the next few days to see how Andy D screws channel 7 over and make a deal with Channel 9 for more money but less coverage.

If Ch 7 & 10 show all 8 games and leave Foxtel out, then I suspect subscriptions in Vic, SA, WA and Tas to drop significantly. Sports is biggest driving force in Pay TV and their is no bigger sport in those states than AF. Foxtel surely wont let that happen

Foxtels on both bids 3 games 7/10, 5 or 6 games Ch 9. And some finals with 9 will have to be on cable.

Fox will go bust if it loses AFL, there is absolutely no reason to have it other than the footy channel.

No channel on fox is good enough to warrant paying for it, the only time it was ok to have fox was when you got the good old gold card and had a few extra free channels. Theres still a way to get it for free, but considering its all crap, theres no use going through the hassle to get it

Sorry I obviously underestimated the value of rerun american sitcoms and replayed movies.

No it is just a fact that there are plenty of people out there who have Foxtel and its not for Fox Footy;)
Some people actually like to see sports from outside Australia or even have the mental capacity to find some of the programs on discovery,National Geographic and History channel interseting:eek:

Agree with what you saying that foxtel is more than Fox Footy because we have foxtel for those exact reasons. Fox Footy, ESPN, International cricket and unique shows that would never be considered for free to air viewing but it is a very strong enticement for Victorian, SA and WA footy fans that may not have the opportunity ti see there side play in the future. Foxtel is currently in 30% of Australian households in SA it like less than 12% and having the AFL on fox footy will increase that by 50% (up to 24-26% in 15 months)

Foxtel would have a rather week return on consumers who have signed up in SA and WA compared to the eastern states and a way of increasing the market share in those states would be via the footy channel. Fox in SA and WA need AFL more than the AFL need foxtel.

Yeah, but what percentage of subscribers get it just for the footy? I'd say it'd be at least 30%... maybe even 50%. Take those numbers out and the business ceases to be financially viable.
