Actually, no. The 7/10 consortium is not committed to LIVE Friday Nights in Sydney and Brisbane.

As I understand it they will be telecast at 8:30 or 9:30 for Friday Night on 7 and 10 won't change the time for games telecast on Sat Night from what they were this year. Not live but a lot better than what is offered now

At the moment the Fri night games in Brissie are on at 1am Saturday. How is that capitalising on the growth of the game after lions make 4 straight GFs? It has to go to 7/10... I mean, 9 put World Championship POKER on before the footy... that's saying something.

7/10 will get it. It'll be great for the development of the game. If it goes to 9 then it's a sure sign that AFL CEO Alex Demetriatis is corrupt.

Hmmm ....... maybe if enough fans finally see how corrupt Demefroot & the commission is ....... it might not be a bad thing for 9/Fox to win the rights again then.

That's great if you live on the east coast. Translate that to an 8.30pm WST start and you realise that the games have already finished before we get to start watching them. Wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't for the fact that channel 9 still pads it chock-full of adverts and BS so the telecast doesn't finish until after 11pm. Frigging joke....

Live, no - but much closer to "live" than what Ch9 can offer.

Ch9 have committed to screening not one, but TWO Rugby League games on Friday nights. That means there is ZERO chance of the AFL being broadcast before midnight (more likely 1am) north of the Murray on a Friday night.

7/10 are talking about starting coverage around 8:30 or 9:00, that's AT LEAST three hours better than anything 9 can put on the table.

It is a myth that 7 will show AFL at 8:30 on a Friday night in NSW/QLD

Seven have already stated many times that it won't be on any earlier than 10:30pm

Caroline Wislon spoke of Nine and Foxtel offering substantially more that Seven/Ten budgeted for. 7/10 are not going to go way over that budget because Kerry Stokes will then have to answer to shareholders.

But it shouldn't be a short sighted, money driven decision. It really should be based on who will give the best coverage to AFL in developing states firstly, then once those criteria are met, who will offer the most clam.

It's no good the AFL getting an extra 10 million $ now but missing the best opportunity in the game's history to capitalise on the success of teams in Brisbane and Sydney.

Do you work for Channel 9 or do you just LOOOOVEEE their coverage? (in which would still lead me to the inference that you are indeed a Channel 9 employee).

10:30pm is still better than 1

It wasn't the AFL's decision to go with the highest bidder. The club presidents had a vote and decided that the most money would win ahead of who offered the best coverage. Wonder which way Eddie voted???

Capitalising on the Lions stunning success in the last 5 years, and the 5 years of Rugby League turmoil prior to that... has been via massive increases in junior development, promotion, and prime time coverage of the Lions. What promotional value is there in live or near live Friday Night AFL Football involving Melbourne Adelaide and/or Perth teams???

Well the idea is to get places like Brisbane more interested in the game not just the Lions. The AFL is really just wasting its time if the support of AFL in Brisbane relies on the success or not of the Lions. The number of people watching non-Lions games on tv is a very important indicator of the health of the AFL in Queensland.

The interesting bit in this is Foxtel's attitude when it comes to negotiating with 7 and 10 for the pay TV rights. 7 and 10 don't really need the pay TV rights (unless they want to start up their own Footy channel), but how much they can on-sell them for to Foxtel will probably determine whether or not they'll win the bid. Because 7 and 10 should be able to come up with $50m or so each, but if they can convince Foxtel to come up with the extra $30m for a similar deal to what they're getting now, but probably a fair bit worse than the deal they'll get in the 9 partnership, then they'll be able to match the 9 bid.

Current interest in regular season non-Lions matches is miniscule. The growth potential for interest in SEQ for Adelaide Perth Melbourne teams is therefore huge.

But at the very least, LD, this means that Sydney and Brisbane can participate in FNF.
As for a 10:30 start in QLD and NSW, we've been screwed over so many times by Channel 9 that 10:30 actually sounds like a decent time.

After a long week of work, it's just too damn hard to stay awake to 2:30 in the morning. And that's at the best of times. When tennis, or God help me, golf! is on, the footy gets pushed back to 5:30 in the morning! How the hell can anyone watch a game in that time slot?!

I believe that Ch Seven have promise even earlier coverage to places like the Gold Coast, SEQ, Canberra and the Riverina via their affliation with PRIME thus giving most of rural NSW and QLD (which includes important development areas) access to Prime Time AFL coverage on a Friday Night, while on the same hand not risking going up live against RL on Ch 9 in Sydney and Brisbane and thus not exposing their investment in their AFL coverage to a ratings hit.

True. It makes sense for 7 to televise live or near live Lions or Swans at 730pm in the Bris or Syd if they are playing, but otherwise begin the standard non-local FNF telecast at 930pm or 1030pm. That makes alot of sense.

1) tape it
or 2) wait for the foxfooty ad-free replay the next day

I thought the regional affiliates were owned by others... or is that just KP/PBL/9?

Well I know the regional Gold Coast- channel 10 had live footy on Saturday nights for a number of years. I can see Prime doing the same thing.

One thing that the Lions fans might not be thinking about is the large number of southern 'invaders' (like this mad catter) who still follow their teams even though they now live in a different state.

When the footy isn't on (which is too often) the fans must play 'spot the Qlder'..getting tougher every week so footy coverage up here isn't only about the Lions.

So what's the name of your President?
Anyone?

How did he/she vote?
