A couple of lbw appeals yesterday, both, umpires call = not out, both reviewed, both had no bat, and ball hitting stumps, one reversed, and one not, please explain ?
CA would have preferred a fairy-tale ending for one of their retiring players?

Simon Taufel explained the first one by saying something something something something something something something something. Of course, that one was smacking the stumps as plain as day. The second one was too, but Simon explained that by saying something something something something. Or something like that.

The lower level test playing teams barely play tests. Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Ireland barely play tests. The icc scheduling is killing the smaller test teams.
Agree…something needs to change. These smaller nations need exposure if they are to develop…at the moment ld argue ICC is more invested in money than development. Gosh it must have been late 90s last time Zimbabwe played over here…..nuts.

We have three opening options, trialing two at a time is fine for two tests against WI, can give Smith/Khawaja/LooseBusChange two tests off
Better to give a specialist player in their best position particularly with no standout replacement (at least to them)
Best situation is to give someone an opportunity with two tests against WI and Chappell-Hadley to settle
I would love to see your last option taken…but my head thinks they’ll go the safe recycled option….As you correctly say the WI NZ series would be the best opportunity to bring in a newbie and let them settle….
Question is will the have the guts to do it…

Early 2003/04 for tests. Hayden’s 380 in Perth.

I have 55 years of supporting Australian Cricket (except for yesterday for an hour) and BBL is meaningless to me
I wonder how many years gokangas has been watching test matches for? I would have said Horace but I used to live on a farm in the vicinity of his place and we didn't have a connection to the electricity grid until 1966 so telly was out of the question. 32v battery and diesel generators didn't get the job done.

T20 wasn't very popular back in those days anyway.

Is there a CA rule that Tests have to be played at the larger, traditional venues?

In the mid-2000s we had Tests in Cairns and Darwin against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and a few years back Canberra hosted Sri Lanka.

I know that broadcasters, State Governments, sponsors, state cricket authorities and touring teams all want a slice. And there will always be a Test every Summer against an established Test nation in the 5 mainland capitals.

But why can't we host Bangladesh, Afghanistan, WI etc in regional centres? To answer my own question, it's because there's no money in it. But England have recently hosted Tests in Southampton, Cardiff, Chester. India have had 18 Test venues in the last 10 years and even NZ have 6 and SA 7.

Well if you have nothing to do over the next few days you could try this …personally l think it should be in the fantasy section…. What an exciting read it would be …no test wins in 23, no silverware…but the chapters of finding the spirit of cricket, our moral victories and joe roots contribution of l wouldn’t want to play for any other team as they are the best on paper would be up there with Pulitzer prize winning literature….bet it ends with a moral victory.
what absolute trash…

I agree that hosting test matches against emerging national teams in regional centres makes sense and I'd think that there must be plenty of grounds with decent pitches that could be used, although many would require temporary stands to accommodate a decent audience.

Some of the venues that those countries use are pretty "unique", which is another way of saying "not test match standard".

A long time - love test cricket. Lived through the upheaval cause by Packer and World Series Cricket. Would rather watch a test match than any other format. Used to go to Tests and Shield games.

I'm wondering, is this a colouring book?

Written properly it would actually be a fascinating read. But I suspect it's about how Bazball conquered the world so it is total trash.

The story of how charismatic leaders got a dysfunctional organisation to believe in themselves and a cause via unconventional means to the extent that they are oblivious to their shortcomings, apply moral superiority to those who vanquish them and are fanatical in their assertion that their beliefs are right is more interesting.

But the story of WW2 Germany has been told before.

Horace used to watch the chariot races at the Hippodrome of Constantinople back in his slightly younger years.

I miss the old ING cup on free to air. I still remember Andy flower hitting one of the 50k signs.

Test cricket remains supreme though. Nothing ‘tests’ a cricketer more.

I wouldnt joke about Bazball too much. Its the only thing keeping test cricket going at the moment. The rest of the world are not really putting bums on seats. And as for as no test wins I think you mean no test series victories but you should then also mention the poms did not lose a test series in 2023 either so dont let facts get in the way of a good story.

Probably both attend and wear the full BBL gear

Place I worked used to sponsor one of the teams - company name across the shirt. I somehow obtained a shirt but I no longer like the company so off to the Op-Shop it went.

I did keep most of my collection of Sydney Olympic flags though - although I suspect my wife has put them in a safe place like Candice did with Davey's hat so unless I ask I'll never see them again ;(

Yes, me too GK. Not better than any of that. I went to Boxing Day at the G in 1971. Not a Test...Vic v NSW traditional Christmas match...believe it or not!! Match started pre Christmas and a fellow called Robert Rowan knocked over NSW when it resumed. Check out some of the players on the ground...Bill Lawry, Ian Redpath, Keith Stackpole, Ritchie Robinson, Paul Sheahan, Jim Higgs, Max Walker, John Scholes (Roo Boy) for the Vics. For NSW...Brian Taber, Alan Turner, Doug Walters, Kerry O'Keefe(Skull), John Benaud, John Gleeson, David Colley. Other than Scholes (great, great bloke and North player...1967 Reserves Premiership) all were established Test players or about to be.

Did Fred Spofforth have a third day whip-round at the SCG for Typhus Horace?

Did Monty Noble and Clem Hill promote whale oil?

As a 10 or 11 year old our family went to our first Test game which involved Brearley as the English Captain

We sat down on the Boundary near where the modern AFL Members stand is today

As you may well recall alcohol was brought into the stadiums in Esky’s and we arrived after the Lunch break

A family outing descended into listening to 1 hour of drunken blokes singing the foulest lymrics about this that and everything else on the human anatomy that rhymed.

We moved after an hour

That was our first and last Test visit as a family

Exciting stuff that bazeball draws no silverware and feral crowds…it’s a fad introduced by a kiwi..The cricketing public over there might be turning up …but if it doesn’t produce silverware or wins only draws the tide will turn pretty quickly… may give hope at home …but not so much away…and their players it’s based around are going to be hitting retirement age very soon…true other teams may look at it but it’s unsustainable in its current format over a period of time…
