My Top 8

1: James Bartel- Clearly number 1- He won the brownlow last year by that far.
2: Dean Cox- Best ruckman in the game.
3: Jonathon Brown- A powerful Half Forward/ Forward, who has strong hands.
4: Joel Corey- Highest average possession winner.
5: Cameron Ling- Best tagger in the game+ shuts down good quality players.
6: Chris Judd- A speedy player who wins a lot of clearances.
7: Luke Hodge
8: Chance Bateman

The reason why Gary Ablett jnr, isn't in the top 8 is because....
Gary Ablett snr. got as many brownlows votes as a 32 year old, and the 32 year old is almost in retirement. Ablett jnr. is overated only because he didn't win the brownlow.

Ablett missed 5 games & still got 22 Brownlow votes.... You have a flawed concept of overrated.

I would have to say Pav, the way he can dominate all around the ground especually at the games toughest position CHF is unmatched in the league. And the fact he has achieved everything he has at fremantle he would always get the best defender or tagger when he is in the midfield and still dominats. im not sure how many goals he got this year but im sure it was over 60, not bad when the midfeild is crap. and also the fact that he can consistantly kick long 60+ metre goals on the run is a good skill to have. thats why he is the best

and why the hell is Richo on this poll he is so so sooooooooo below the other players on this poll it isnt funny

Num 1 player right now...

Buddy - From another Stratosphere....superstar that lights the game up, he just needs to go near the ball and the excitement factor goes through the roof.

then

Ablett
Pavlich
Hodge
Judd
Reiwoldt
Richo

What are you talking about with Cooney sure he is the Brownlow medallist and he even went to my high school so he is one of my favourite players so i'd be biased towards him but Cooney is not on of the top 10 AFL superstars.

Of course he is! He was as good as, if not better than Ablett and Franklin in the first half of the year. People underrate him hugely on here either because they don't watch football to form their own opinions, or have the memory of a goldfish and focus on his lack-lustre finals series in which he was injured.

Cooney 2008 > Judd 2008. Judd had a very good year, but down on his usual standards and probably not in the best 5 midfielders in the game in 2008.

He was good, but not that good mate. Get your hand off it.

Pretty sure he was favourite for the Brownlow for the first 11 games.
Not at all sure that's factual, but he may have been.

Not sure we should take much notice from betting odds though IMO.
It could be argued he was a high chance because of his ranga head and his propensity to consistently get the pill. That wouldn't mean he was regarded as the best player in the league.

The chance of a forward wining the brownlow is very low, so the brownlow isnt the best guide, I just look at all games and at the end see the big bloke in brown n gold with 23 on his back a long way ahead, just watched the season highlights again, his that far ahead its not even funny

So far, 14 out of the 22 people who voted for Judd have been Carlton supporters. Massive joke how he is only one vote behind Franklin.

EDIT: He is now equal with Franklin. LOL.

He was the best chance because he was the best player. Get your hand off it.

OMG...

3 of Abletts games this year were called some of the best performances by a midfielder of the modern era, by the experts.

*The sydney game in Round 5 where he got 3 goals, 35 possesions- about 19 of those were contested & he won us the game in the last quarter.

*His 2 goals, 39 possession game against the Kangaroos in Round 11. Was a phenomenal performance.

*His 2 goals, 37 possesion game against the Eagles in Round 14.

Cooney had a great first half of the season, but it was not better than Gary Ablett's, and I don't reckon it was better than Franklin's.

Gary Ablett can rack up all the stats he likes . . . and Geelong still lose the GF.

Whereas I don't see Hawthorn losing while Franklin boots 8 goals.

Franklin by a mile.

Ablett/Pavlich
Franklin
Hodge/Judd
Riewoldt
Richardson

Ablett, tough, freakish and consistent
Pavlich, can do it at either end and in the guts, only reason I didn't have him outright top was the handful of occassions in games this season where he could have made the difference and he didn't, probably more from fatigue from carrying the team.
Franklin not my number one purely because it's only been one season so far, another like this year and he'll be number one with daylight second.
Hodge tough, fearless, just a dead set gun.
Judd is a jet, gets tagged unmercifully and still beats them more often than not, is still going when others are vomiting. Hopefully he gets all of his acceleration back.
Riewoldt great player but not in Pavlich's or Franklin's class. Doesn't influence games like the other two.
Richardson love him, gives everything, just keeps on keeping on.
