James Aish- Any young player would be ruined at Brisbane but looks to be building well at Collingwood.
Sam Mayes- Again ruined by Brisbane but has so much potential.
I take it someone doesn't like Brisbane?

ummm lets take a look at this list shall we
Sam Jacobs- Been one of the premier ruckmen in the comp for the past 6 years now. Could return to his best in 2017.
Brodie Smith- One of the best rebounding defenders in the comp. With better luck with concussions could return to his 2014-15 form.
Rory Laird- One of the best small defenders in the comp and still can get even better. Possible All Australian in 2017
James Aish- Any young player would be ruined at Brisbane but looks to be building well at Collingwood.
Sam Mayes- Again ruined by Brisbane but has so much potential.
Jack Redden- Was one of Brisbane's best players, didn't settle as well as expected with West Coast but I think he will be better in 2017.
Bryce Gibbs- Hard at it player who is one of Carlton's best leaders.
Troy Menzel- Lots of upside and I see us getting the best out of him if he can stop being lazy.
Travis Varcoe- A big player in Geelong's dominance era.
Matt Scharenberg- Would be a star of the competition now if it wasn't for his bad luck in injuries.
Tim Broomhead- Shown some good upside.
Brodie Grundy - One of the best ruckmen going around atm and will only get better.
Ben Kennedy- Showing good signs with Melbourne.
Orazio Fantasia- Going to be a star player for Essendon, showed good signs in 2016.
Lachie Neale- One of Fremantles best players and one reason they didn't finish bottom in 2016.
Daniel Menzel- Since having better luck with injury he looks to be playing close to his potential best.
Phil Davis- One of the toughest defenders, always puts his body on the line for his team.
Billy Stretch- Will play some good footy under Goodwin, one of their future guns.
Trent Dumont- One or the rising younsters at North Melbourne, will step up more with their recent departures.
Jack Hombsch- Good defender who is one of Port's best leaders. Possible future captain for them.
Tom Jonas- Reliable defender for Port apart from his 5 week suspension haha. Still a good player.
Chad Wingard- Love him or hate him, he is one of the best small forwards in the comp when up and running.
Luke Dunstan- Could potentially be St Kilda's next captain. Will only get better.
George Hewett- Looks to be a good player, you don't get selected in Grand finals if you arent any good.
Caleb Daniel- One of the many reasons the Bulldogs won the premiership this year, one of the smartest footy brains in the AFL.
Alex Neal-Bullen- Like Stretch looks to be part of Melbourne's positive future.
Maybe. I don't know much about SA jnior footy but a couple of regional teams with a few suburban teams not alligned to SA clubs might work better than a system that isn't working. What will motivate clubs to change their approach? Can they even afford to?We don't have the population to do it though. The SANFL U18's are the best we have and it looks to be staying that way. As Papa G mentioned, country footy (in terms of youth development) here is absolutely shit house. The state clubs do **** all for it.
An academy for young kids in the country in SA would pump out a shit load of kids for the draft.
A lot of potential in that group though to become genuine stars.Add in Betts.
Yeah not awful but it lacks the firepower of Victoria and WA. Franklin, Rioli, Ablett, Pendlebury, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Selwood, Naitanui, Gawn, Rance, Parker/Kennedy/Hannebery, the Bont, Cripps.. it's close to 22 genuine stars in both WA and Victoria v guys like Davis, Daniel, Smith (who aren't shit but aren't the true stars of the comp) being some of the better players in SA.
As I posted earlier though I think it's cyclical and may be reversed in 10 years, particularly if junior footy gets a more streamlined pathway in SA, but for the time being I don't think you can argue the list of players above is close to Vic/WA.
Did better than WA in the shield and One day comps last season. They are garbage at cricket as well.
This. Local league is more concerned about being "the second best team in the comp" through recruiting washed-up AFL rejects rather than developing local talent.
SA clubs need an academy
I look forward to them showing their stuff in the Test side in a couple of weeks.Did better than WA in the shield and One day comps last season.
I like it here too. Still love "home" back in Vic, but have no issues living in SA. Of course, I'll never admit that in person to any of these flogs hereI moved here from Melbourne and i have to admit Adelaide took me by surprise. For a young family it is amazing.
Bought a puratap the other day - my kids should have a leg up on the rest to get drafted in the future! It's the tap water.
oh not really mate, I am just saying that Brisbane haven't been able to develop players properly under Voss and Leppitsch but I suspect that will change under Fagan.I take it someone doesn't like Brisbane?
Too short, will never make it.Oh Hai guys.
Because (as Port have been saying for years), the SANFL is a totally inept and corrupt organisation and the AFL have been negligent in not prising control of footy in SA from them. Why isn't South Australia producing stars anymore?
Champion South Australians since the mid-80s – Kernahan, Bradley, Jarman, Platten, McGuinness, Rehn, Modra, Ricciuto, Goodwin, Edwards, Hart, Smart, Pickett, Tredrea, Wanganeen, Cornes, Burgoyne, Cooney, Enright, Pavlich. Includes four Brownlow medallists from the last 30 years.
Cooney, Enright and Pavlich have retired meaning the best South Australians in the AFL – its only genuine stars – are Wingard, Neale and Gibbs, not counting the soon to retire Burgoyne, Thompson and Griffen.
The majority of the premiership winning Crows and Power teams were South Australian. Now, only one of the Crows – Brodie Smith - and three of the Port B&F top 10 – Ebert, Broadbent and Westhoff - were locals.
Lots of solid contributors from SA including Jacobs, Vince, Mackie, Puopolo, Varcoe, Laird, Pearce, Thomas, Davis, Edwards and Grundy. But most of these are close to retirement too.
The real worry is when you look at the South Australians chosen in recent drafts, the situation is only getting worse. Excluding the 2015 draft because it's too early to judge, and accepting that 2009 draft potential stars Trengove and Menzel have suffered injury, apart from Wingard and Neale there's virtually no star potential since then in the early rounds of the draft from 2010.
The 2016 draft shapes up with the strong possibility of no South Australians going in the top 20 picks according to the experts.
- 2010 - Sam Day #3, Jared Polec #5, Daniel Gorringe #10, Seb Tape #13, Brodie Smith #14, Scott Lycett #29, Patrick McCarthy #34, George Horlin Smith #37
- 2011 - Brad McKenzie #18, Alex Forster #29, Mitch Grigg #41, Sam Rowe #44, Nicholas Joyce #46, Jordan Murdoch #48
- 2012 - Jimmy Toumpas #4, Sam Mayes #8, Troy Menzel #11, Brodie Grundy #18, Ben Kennedy #19, Tim Broomhead #20, Tim O’Brien #28, Brodie Murdoch #40, Matthew McDonough #42
- 2013 - Matt Scharenberg #6, James Aish #7, Luke Dunstan #18, Sean Lemmens #27, Trent Dumont #30, Malcolm Karpany #31, George Hewett #32
- 2014 - Sam Durdin #16, Harrison Wigg #35, James Rose #37, Declan Hamilton #39, Alex Neal-Bullen #40
My question is what's happening in SA? Is this the bad part of the cycle or this this the new normal? Do South Australians really want to watch local teams made up of Victorians?
Too short, will never make it.

Coopers is the local brew.
Also even West End takes a dump on that VB slop.
The main reason is Adelaides population is ageing.
Young people get their uni qualifications and take off to the business centres of Melbourne and Sydney and to a lesser extent Perth and Brisbane.
Premiership player, 2nd in the rising star. All recruiters should be ashamed for thinking Caleb Daniel is too short to make it in the AFL, what he lacks in height, he makes up in brains. I can definitely see him being a 200 gamer for the Western Bulldogs. Where did he come from again? OH YEAH, SOUTH AUSTRALIAAAA
Once a South Australian, Always a South Australian.
I so agree, he was always a step above others here when watching him play for South Adelaide, used to always do lots of damage against my side Norwood. He is a star.Premiership player, 2nd in the rising star.
33 disposals
4 tackles
1 goal
5 goal assists
8 inside 50s
Over in subiaco in a final against west coast with extremely handy averages all round for the rest of the season in his second year of football.
If that isn't a star footballer from South Australia I'll eat my hat.
CUB along with most Australian brewers specialise in crap beer.Accidental discovery no doubt.
Just as well I don't drink VB then.
Actually, having spent a significant amount of time in Adelaide, the population is ageing because every day feels like it is a week long.......
Visiting the Big Balls in Rundle St Mall is seen as excitement.
I pity you.

Adelaide is the 5th most liveable city in the world.
You can bag it all you want, but I've lived in multiple world-wide cities and Adelaide is by far the best.
