Should have been a free against. It’s funny though for key forwards, they get scragged & held all the time but pretty rare for frees unless you’re protected (Hawkins, Kennedy) or a flopper (Brown, Riewoldt)
What’s this new standard from the commentators that if you accentuate the contact it shouldn’t be a free?

Weightman gets his jumper pulled yesterday without the ball and the umpire doesn’t give him a free so he makes it obvious … somehow Carey thinks it should be play-on.

Because Ballard made the push obvious it shouldn’t be a free?

I’m all for cracking down on acting with in-game penalties (free from next centre bounce) from a VAR type system rather than nothing $1000 fines but it’s fine to show the contact that was always there.

Cody’s a bit over the top, he absolutely does not flop (which is what the fines have been paid for recently) and always plays the ball and is no where near as bad as gets made out - you read the comments on a FB article and it sounds like he kicked 5 goals from free kicks when in reality he kicked 1 from a line ball decision and ethe rest was just great footy. My only gripe with him doing it is sooner or later umps are going to stop paying him frees he should get because he’s got a name for it, he’s noticeable enough already that for the most part if he should receive a free he’ll usually get it. The one yesterday was line ball there was the smallest of tugs maybe technically there but im happy to see that go unpaid for the most part as if we’re paying them then you could pick one out of every contest and I think the games already over umpired.

Well said.
Unfortunately the AFL Rules Committee and Umpiring Board are often influenced by the commentocracy. So the silliness quickly finds its way from the media into the game itself.

St K are 4-1
Are they actually any good?
They're probably 1 win ahead of where you'd expect them to be with their draw, having beaten both Richmond and Freo (I'd have thought 1-1 from those games would be par). They look good at times and a strong chance for the top 8 but in my opinion certainly not in the top echelon of teams. Max King breaking out has made a big difference.

In the past when I've been a neutral observer watching 2 other teams play, I've had what I think is a reasonable grasp of the umpire decisions and why they are paid. Lately however, I cannot understand many of them at all. There is so much interpretation of the holding the ball/holding the man/push in the back (both one-on-one and piling on packs) that the understanding of the rules has become guesswork.
Is it a case that the rules are too complex that even the umpires and players have difficulty understanding them? One could argue that it has always been thus but as I sit watching 'neutral' games on the TV these days I often have to shake my head and join the chorus: "What the hell was that for?"

It’s strange this year. After being told that umpires were going to clamp down on this and that, they now seem to be inconsistent with HTB, disposal and prior opportunity, yet coming down hard on moving on the mark, waving arms to suggest dissent, or saying something to another player that the ump takes personally.

While it’s good to see the Richmond flogs complaining, remember Adelaide media and supporters after their game against the Bulldogs in 2016 at Docklands when they whined about a lopsided free kick count in our favour.

I suppose they don’t think frees have to be even today do they🙄

33 to 13!!! I demand an enquiry! I hope Hardwick mentioned it in his presser.

does anyone else hate watching Melbourne play?
Yes me. I have to add that, to be honest, I am somewhat envious of just how well they've got their football act together: game plan, team structures, personnel and above all, fitness. They truly are the benchmark by some margin.

When has this ever happened? Selwood has been a ducker for like 15 years, everyone knows it, and the umps have never stopped paying him free kicks. Hunter has been getting away with his shoulder shrugs or whatever he does for years and the umps never stop paying it. McLean never stopped getting frees despite his reputation. I really don't think having a reputation influences the umpires whatsoever.

Absolutely. I've never really liked the club, but hats off to them. They have done a lot of things right to turn things around. I feel some grudging admiration coming on.

Fair call, probably more wishful thinking on my behalf that umpires do crack down on serial offenders more than any actual evidence to the matter - point still stands though that I think he overdoes it a bit and would like to see him tone it down a notch, kid is a seriously good footballer in every aspect of the game there’s no real need for it - in saying that I ****ing love every one he gets at the time 😂
