He couldn't do **** all with a team facing a rebuild at Hawthorn. In fact they couldn't wait to replace him when it was clear that he'd run out of ideas. He's facing the same issue with this his abomination of a team at norf.

When his story is finally written, we'll see if he truly is a great coach (probably) or one who was gifted a dynasty with a draft hand aided and abetted by Freo selling the farm for Trent Croad. Which netted them the backbone of their onfield leadership with Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell during his reign(possibly).

Followed by what is probably the greatest draft haul of all time 3 years later when they got Franklin, Roughead and Lewis. You'd be hard pressed to find a club that has bookended a 4 year draft period jackpot as well as the Hawks did in those years. It's quite amazing that a lot of their selections in between were busts. This included the one, the only Lachlan Veale.

This has worked out exactly as every footy watcher has thought, and would’ve thought 6 months ago. Except for whatever geniuses put the fixture together.

I understand it’s not an exact science. Who could’ve foreseen the saints being up there and Freo shitting the bed.

But ffs could we all have agreed that Dees v Nirth and WC v Blues would not be a compelling Saturday night?!

Someone somewhere in AFL house is getting paid more than most of us to make these insanely terrible decisions.

The 2004 draft was great for them but I think it’s sometimes overlooked that in the 2004-2006 period they used 4 x Top 6 draft selections on KPFs. They got 2 duds in Dowler (next pick was Ryder) and Thorp (next pick was Selwood) but were lucky enough to hit the jackpot with Roughy and Franklin.

I get some teams perform differently to what the afl is expecting (eg Freo, so we lucked out there), but you shouldn't get 3 of the bottom teams from the previous year

But we keep thinking this is sport and really it is sport + business + entertainment + gambling vehicle. Fairness is a folly. The fixture is just that a FIXture.
