On another note, I thought the mods usually tried to keep threads to around 400 pages

So you're the one...

If Port rolled us in the Showdown, every chance Koch would have taken the opportunity to announce Ken’s extension.
I think kornes stated exactly that. Announcement was all ready to go. Just forgot to be good enough to win

A cynical person could think they were taking an opportunity to rest some players…

I’m not talking about me by the way, only cynical people

I think your right and once they virtually had top 4 locked in it has all been about finals preparation.

By the first final they will virtually have their best side so I think people are too quick to right them off.

Dixon and Lycett probably only have a few games left in them so why ruin them now.

Not sure they would have banked on slipping out of the top 2 though.

They set themselves for the Collingwood game, didn’t bank on losing to us and now find themselves hampered by injuries when desperately needing a win.

Flirt with form and pay the price.

I don't think they desperately need a win. They won't lose a top 4 spot. Top 2 would clearly have been the aim but more important to have the best players out there when it counts.

Dixon and Lycett are better off resting.

Luck wise this has been their year. Even if they lose the first week they will probably get a banged up 5-8 team.

Maybe downplaying the difference between top 2 and top 4.

Top 4 means they play in Brisbane or Melbourne against a top 2 team in week 1.

If they lose that and go on to win their home semi, they are back in Brisbane or Melbourne for an away preliminary.

They would love a home qualifying final, win that and lock in a home preliminary. Top 2 goes a long way towards a GF appearance.

This. They don’t have the luxury of Victoria teams getting a home final despite finishing lower on the ladder.

They could pinch a win at AO, but at the MCG with 100,000 Collingwood fans and the umpires that come with it? No chance.

Just look at Collingwood v Port at MCG v AO this year. That’s the difference home ground advantage will mean.

Is he that much of a loss?

I think so, even when not marking plays a critical role in creating the contest to bring the ball to ground for their smalls to run onto it. Without him they're pushing shit up hill against some of the teams in the finals with the better key defenders like Melbourne and Brisbane.

Also probably their best ruckman such that while missing Lycett it's all the worse.

They're a better side without Dixon, well along as Marshall plays with some effort.

He's looked terrible the last month.
Finlayson is the key. He's dropped off/been injured in recent times.

They've probably cost themselves a home final in week 1, which is huge for their chances. Now they have to win away from home vs another top 4 team. Makes a GF appearance so much more difficult.
They also have the possibility of missing the top 4 altogether as well, GWS have the best record in the league since the bye and a good AO record, Freo away are tricky, Tigers will lift for Cotchin's last game. The banged up 5-8 team could well be us too which would be their worst case scenario.
Not that I'm complaining

Cotchin and Selwood gone. A great moment for the game

Gives me the shits how commentators NOW say "he raised his arm, that contributed to the high contact, no free".

FFS every football fan (except for Geelong fans) across Australia was saying the same thing for 15 years during Selwoods. career and it was crickets from these useless commentators.

Now he's retired "Oh, you shouldn't do that".

AFL media/commentators are the most useless of any sporting code in the entire world, they are so inept and unwilling to 'rock the boat' and call a spade a spade. "I don't want to lose my AFL accreditation".

I can't see them losing a top 4 spot.

I hope your right but they are not winning anything without their best team so Collingwood away with their best team compared to Melbourne at home with key players missing might be their best option. They get past the first week and they host a Prelim.

Compared to some other teams Port's best players will be back for finals. It's not ideal but given the situation they are in I think they are doing the right thing.

They were probably wanting to do it 4-5 weeks ago, but are waiting for Port's next win.

The thing is its not entirely impossible Port dont win another game in 2023. :drunk:

Did allow us that beautiful Luke Shuey memory from 2017 though.

It's ironic that out of all clubs it was a Collingwood player doing it that made them finally start umpiring it properly. 100% agree though. Absolute rubbish that he made a career out of it. They tried to curb it at one stage, then proceeded to umpire it different for everyone else and keep paying them to Selwood. But a Collingwood kid does it a few times and it's a crisis.
