You wouldn’t for a pick 1 gun mid?
They’re so thin on first round talent now. It’s a genuine question and will continue as the picks given up start to become players.

JFH will be good no doubt but throwing in all your chips on him might not give Port the edge to win a flag. Compare to Collingwood got Daicos for nothing. Brisbane got Ashcroft for nothing and will get another. GWS went past Port this year and have Callaghan, Cadman and this years crop coming through. Melbourne have a list that has won a flag and added Windsor this year.

There are gun mids every year. What is the bar for a gun mid anyway?

We offered North three first rounders for JHF. He is quality, could be a league best player within 5 years.

But yeah, Port's depth is terrible. The reason they make Finals. But struggle in September.

We were lucky the Roos rejected the deal as no (particularly unproven) player is worth 3x 1st rounders.

Watching him play, he will be a genuine star of the competition but I dont see anything more than Butters already offers. So paying 3 first rounders was way over the top. I think our list is ticking along nicely im not sure a JHF would make anymore difference.

Ports list is cooked. Its some incredibly poor list management. A lot of balance has been sacrificed for that midfield. I can see them not making the 8 next year.

And next year they only have a 2nd round draft pick and a third round draft pick. No first or fourth.

How are they going to build their list?

I mean from our perspective its great but there is pain to come for them. They will look back and see that 2020 and 2021 were the equivalent of our 2005 and 2006.

I think he's got more brute power than Butters, he will be the guy that they rely upon to win the contest and break forward of the stoppage. And he'd make a huge difference to us. But 3 firsts, depending on where they sit, is a big ask. Not that Port paid that, they got him for a decent price. Plus they had exposed form at the level, where he'd shown how good he's going to be.

He’d want to address, and adjust, his lazy attitude if port are gonna rely upon him to win the contest in future.

the lad has talent but he loves to pick and chose his moments to put in effort.

if he changes this he can easily become a top 5 player in the comp.

Man, this was almost a direct quote from the early season JHF criticism by David King .....a bitter and biased POV by him

The facts are, 2023 was effectively JHF's first AFL season .....in the off-season he had operations on both legs, thus restricting his running .....so of course, JHF can't 2-way run to the same level as a 3rd season midfielder

That said, his running improved dramatically as the season progressed .....so the description of picking & choosing is plain wrong !

2nd year mid coming off an injury hampered first year. Can't expect him to be able to go at full throttle for a full game yet. Gonna be huge if/when he can.

Butters game fell apart in Finals. Too soft. Rozee as well.

JHF was able to keep contesting. Statically not great, but you can see as a second year player he has that physical presence.

They need a fit and in form Wines in the stoppages. At least whilst JHF is building the tank required to run out a full game in the guts.

Name me Ports round 1 2025 forward line and back line.

They’ll cobble together enough to play finals. Marshall and Georgiadis aren’t a bad couple ahead of the ball. Tall backs you can cobble together, like we did with Butts and Murray. I see them being better structured behind the ball in 2024 than they were this year. They’re not losing much over the next offseason. I’m seeing a Cats period around the top 6, most likely without the flag though.

Everyone says their midfield is the absolute key.
Butters, Rozee, Drew, Wines, Houston played 25/25 games last season.
JHF & Bergmann 24/25.
One or two serious injuries to this midfield group and they are badly exposed, literally have no-one to replace them.

This x 1000
Thier SANFL team is horrendous they have zero depth , a couple of key injuries they’re screwed
We at least have depth in all areas

I think an enormous amount rests on some of the young guys on their list like Sinn, Jackson etc ( and some of the young talls too) if that group can't throw up some regular player's then the depth is thin as you say.
