Where's your proof for this?

Why theh have only 2 players been recently been detected as positive on game day?

It doesn't appear to support your claim.
No one has proof. Anecdotal evidence as well as friends who have seen players over the years. The numbers would reflect society also, its fairly widespread.

I doubt there's many, if any who do it the night before a game.

So you are just plucking percentages out of your arse...

Well I already knew that, but good that you confirmed.

What do people legitimately think the % would be among current AFL players?

I wouldn't have a clue.

I wonder if it differs much from club to club?
I reckon a lot more than people are willing to admit. I’m a bit shocked people are acting so indignant, as if a bunch of 18-29 year old males straight out of high school and given a load of cash aren’t within the exact at risk population. there’s also been a coke surge in the last 5 years or so, it’s absolutely everywhere when you go out (sorry to the over 40s who are in bed by 8pm—ie mostly anyone who still uses forums; ps that is close to including me too btw don’t get angry at me) and I know this may break the illusion for some of you but after games and during off season them players aren’t going home to their long term partners to catch up on would I lie to you or muster dogs.

how many do we seriously reckon are doing it a day or 2 before a premiership points game though?

I’ll raise you half time during a prelim in 2006

Can't help stupid.

I see they are trying to argue that the percentage found was very low & not performance enhancing... but not sure that will make a difference.
Which would possibly account for him ONLY getting 2 years. Fairly sure the WADA standard for testing positive in competition is 4 years.

The question isn't why he copped a 2 year ban. The question is why the ban was ONLY 2 years.

I'm guessing most players have a general plan for doing drugs that doesn't involve doing them right before a match where they could be game day tested. Evading detection by doing them earlier in the week is probably what most of them do

Supposedly cocaine use in Australia amongst general Adult population is around 5 to 6%. Maybe its a little higher amongst footballers because of income but I'd be surprised if it's much higher than 10%

That includes all the elderly people though right?

It would be much higher in the age demographic of an AFL player, of course not factoring in how a lot of coke in Australia has no cocaine in it

Don't the players get randomly tested during the week too?

You're misunderstanding the situation. You need to look at it from the sports/leagues perspective. If they tested everyone and 50% are testing positive, the black mark against the sport and league would be catastrophic. Loss of sponsorship monies would be huge.

Ultimately it's in the AFL's best interest for no one to test positive apart from a handful of no name players who can act as sacrificial lambs to make the league look tough on drugs. It's a bit of a balancing act between enforcing and turning a blind eye. The clubs not reporting on players 1st strike helps.

NBA is notorious for letting players get away with murder. You want to know why Lebron is playing basketball at a higher level and for longer than Jordan...? There is more smoke than an Aussie bushfire. The NFL is pretty lenient too but so they should be, half the league plays in position where they are literally brutally tenderized every game.

No, actually the data was for employed Australians , so working age only

It's interesting that only 1 person got a 2 year suspension for in season use again this year. No one has had a strike 3 since travis tuck.

There is an easy loophole for players in the AFL where you simply self report yourself for illicit drugs immediately before doing the test. Then you go down a medical management pathway instead. The AFL no longer reports those numbers, last I heard it was a couple dozen a year ( but that was all illicit drugs, not just coke. Cannabis for example is at least 3 to 4 times more common in the general community).
The player has to agree to participate in a rehab program, but while they do any positive results don't count as a strike and don't get reported
Nick Reiwoldt went on a big rant about it a couple years ago as he felt its being abused as a away for some players to just continue to use indefinitely while excluding themselves from any repercussions.

But still if it's a couple dozen per year for all illicit drugs out of around 750 players on AFL lists, it's not indicating the numbers some people are throwing out.

Why does the media need to provide constant updates on Oliver not being at training?

The guy has some issues he needs to take responsibility for, but his own club threw him under the bus and told the world he has all these issues and the media has not stopped talking about it since.

Just the AFL media parasites trying to stay relevant in the off-season.

Cornes and Edmund were talking about the makeup of the Test team this morning……

Do we know how often they get tested though?

Like how often during a season would you get tested?

I somehow doubt it's every player, every week, twice a week.

And if you kinda sorta get told a test is coming up... so it's not that random... I'd think it would be pretty easy to get away with.
