Port also have history in this area. I'm surprised the punishment was so lenient.

They certainly do.

I'm disappointed in the leniency of the punishment, but not at all surprised.

A fine allows the case to be considered closed, swept under the rug and never talked about again in time for the weekend matches of football to distract any further attention.

A legitimate punishment, with the threat of losing premiership points or draft picks would require a lengthy investigation that would put the AFL itself under scrutiny. For example, why wasn't there an independent doctor from the AFL, rather than from the club, available to conduct the player assessment?

That's a situation HQ would rather avoid.

On the groin incident can you imagine the uproar if someone had of done it to say...... Nick Daicos. As far as im concerned that is the dirtiest thing that can happen on a footy field and should be a 7+ week suspension. It's effectively forcible sexual assualt on a football field.

Completely agree.

Do that in any other line of work and you're unemployed with court appearance dates in your calendar.

Once again though HQ tried to pretend it didn't happen at first, then made a token action at the last minute to get it out of the media cycle before the weekend fixtures.

Agreed.

Everything about Gil's comments here are a massive cop out

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan told reporters on Friday afternoon that the League hadn't considered docking premiership points or draft picks as part of the penalty.

"It's obviously a large sanction but Port Adelaide's ownership of the mistake from the start and their contrition and the way they worked proactively with our Integrity department meant that I don't think that was ever contemplated," McLachlan said.

McLachlan said the size of the fine would act as a deterrent and a reminder for all clubs to take seriously their obligations under the AFL's concussion protocols.

He said the incident would be looked at as part of the League's annual review of concussion management, but he didn't believe that the club doctor's ability to make an objective decision was an issue in this instance.

"When everyone's comfortable it's a mistake, I don't think it goes to independence; it goes to a poor decision," McLachlan said.

"At the moment, the focus is on systems and processes and what was going on on match day in what is - with two people coming off at once - obviously a pressure situation, how we can make sure the right decision is made every time."

Port took ownership from the start? Pretty sure Ken was in the media telling everyone how right they got it from the start.

Further to this: why are there rules for the handling of concussed or potentially concussed players but nothing written down about penalties for breaching those rules? I mean I know why, but someone should be asking the question.

This is a bit extreme. The Port Dr said he made a mistake and the coach has explained it.
Realistically, with all my medical training, who would jump to conclusions that a head knock test would be required just because two players are lying on the ground unconcious. I can see why the AFL would be undersranding.

only after the entire industry laughed them to shreds and the AFL sent a "please explain"
Laughable they can now say they made a mistake
(and yes i got the sarcasm).

Hawks were destroying them at the moment.
Great to see the pies struggling with expectation
