I’m positive that one is so bad others are shitting on it, like, that’s actually meme worthy that some numpty actually posted that
The average wage is 400k per year in the AFL. If you're 26, just had a career best year, and firmly entrenched in the 22, you should, at the very least, be on the average wage.I still can’t understand how Acres is regarded as a big loss by many here. He played half a dozen good games for us in his 3 seasons. If it wasn’t for JLo he would probably be playing WAFL now. Call me old fashioned but his attitude stunk at the end of last season asking for a payrise.
Carlton are in a bit of a pickle:
1. Sack Vossy and be known as that club that sacks everyone - so not a very attractive proposition for any good coach to go.
2. Keep Vossy and persist with someone who, although a great guy, at this stage has not shown the tactical nous to be a good coach.
What do ya do?
While we are chatting all things Carlton, this from the Carlton board:
In - dow, binns
Out - mcgovern. Acres
"Acres turns the ball over way too much and just makes silly decisions. Sure he works hard but is obviously low on confidence. Binns works hard/has a high footy IQ and might give the team a spark."
In the eyes of the Carlton fan, it has taken Blake 10 weeks to go from "steal of the trade period" to dropping him.
Not much patience that mob.
That’s kinda his problem, took him over two years to pull his finger out. Being on an AFL list beats being on a WAFL list and in my opinion that’s exactly where he was headed in his first two years with us.The average wage is 400k per year in the AFL. Because there is a chance they get an even worse coach which shit spirals them into the dark ages for 2 decades.Yeah I've never understood rival fans wanting other clubs to move on a bad coach. Ideally, there would be 17 of them going around.
The other musical chairs scenario has Stewie being sacked for Hardwick to enjoy the sunshine after six months off, and Richmond grabbing Ken quickly. If this is the case, Port need to upgrade their offer to Hinkley smartly. The only way they sack him is if someone else comes up. If Port sack Ken to bring in Hardwick then you would assume Carlton would try everything to get Hinkley. Other than that, there is not really any point in sacking Voss- at least not yet.

If we go off your metric, that 16 players in each team are on 400k or above, then Acres absolutely should be on 400k in 2023. I think he finished about 11th in the best and fairest from memory. The average wage is somewhat skewed by the high earners. Most players earn in the 100-200k and 200k-300k bracket. On average, each team has 16 players on 400k and above. Would you want Acres being in that group? I would say there are clearly 13 players who would/should be paid more than him, not including what we are on the hook for with Hamling & Wilson, and not including players like Switta, Schultz, Brodie (who would be in the conversation for similar/bigger contract values compared with Acres). And then there are the youngsters coming through underneath (O'Driscoll, Johnson, Erasmus, Chapman, Amiss, Walker, Treacy, Freddy), and many/all would be projected to be more valuable than Acres. It makes total sense why we took the stance we did (ignoring the poor trade value), as 400k for Acres is very much borderline and perhaps overs for what we should be paying a player like him. And remember that while he had a career best year, he also was poor for a few years.

Look, let's look at this a different way. The metric that was used is that the top 16 players at any club are on 400k and above. Why?
He has a history of spudding it up and barely can get through a season. His disposal is an absolute momentum killer.
I believe he was offered a performance based contract was because the club saw him being overtaken by players with actual ability to kick a ball this season.
$14,040,000 salary cap. 36 primary list. Min contract $100,000 with no allowance for match payments and just twenty six players considered "best twenty two" comes to $500,000 per best 26 player.
The average may be $400,000 but 56% of players earn less than that.
20.64% of players make under $200,000 (7.6 players per team)
19.12% of players are between 200k and 300k (7 players per team)
16.54% of players between 300k and 400k (6 players per team)
It's not possible to field an AFL side without a significant number of these players above in the best twenty two.
I don't think Blake Acres is in the top quarter of players at any club, neither Fremantle or Carlton.
You didn’t ask me but I’ll answer it anyway. I personally think he was (just scraping in based on few very good games) but to base the new contract value on that would have been naive at best and reckless at worst. He was never gonna be our long term winger and I hazard a guess the club probably shared that opinion and offered him less than he thought he was worth.Look, let's look at this a different way. Do you believe Blake Acres was in the best 16 players at Freo in 2022?
