yes the interpretation of the Greyness in the rule is what is at issue here

18.6.1 Spirit and Intention
The Player who has Possession of the Football will be provided an opportunity to dispose of the football before rewarding an opponent for a Legal Tackle.

So the intent is to always favour the holder of the ball
18.6.2 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: Prior Opportunity
Where a Player in Possession of the Football has had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if that Player does not Correctly Dispose of the football immediately when they are Legally Tackled.

So if you have prior opportunity then you must make a CORRECT DISPOSAL via hand or foot. Not just attempt to make disposal. This is getting mixed up by some umpires who are missing the prior oppurtunity, eg, push off, steping, changing direction, hands free
18.6.3 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: Incorrect Disposal
Where a Player in Possession of the Football has not had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if that Player elects to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when Legally Tackled. For the avoidance of doubt, a Player does not elect to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when:
(a) the Player genuinely attempts to Correctly Dispose of the football;
(b) the Legal Tackle causes the football to be dislodged from the Player’s possession.

So we get to the above and we we see it has grey area of "Attempts" to correctly dispose. The rule is about the word "ELECT" the player makes a choice to DISPOSE ot not DISPOSE , if he a good actor he can ELECT to keep the ball but jsut make it look like he ATTEMPTING to dispose of it.
18.6.4 Free Kicks - Holding the Ball: No Genuine Attempt
Where a Player in Possession of the Football has not had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if the Player is able to, but does not make a genuine attempt to Correctly Dispose of the football within a reasonable time when Legally Tackled.

So another area that can get misinterpreted , once tackled you have to TRY or ATTEMPT genuinyl to dispose of the ball. This does not mean you make a CORRECT Disposal by hand or foot, just that you TRIED
So dropping the ball towards your feet can be seen as you TRIED.

So in summary the rules are there. but erros are made by umpires

Would be easier to remove the greyness and change it to if you tackled after prior opp and you dont dispose correctly it is FREE KICK , if you tackled as you grab the ball, (within max 5 sec) then it is ball up.

make it simpler to interpret.

Great post. This really highlights how flawed by design the rules are. Umpires should be expected to adjudicate on actions, not intent. If you attempt to dispose of the ball but the tackle forces you to drop or throw it then the tackle should be rewarded. Instead umpires are so busy trying to determine whether a genuine attempt was made or trying to determine the player's true intent that there's now no consistency at all. I actually feel for the umpires (except the POS that screwed us against Carlton).

In a time when we give umpires shit let’s appreciate this fella for a moment. One of the universally loved characters. Was a pretty handy player and could dance better than Patrick Swayze
That worm goal signal he did in an exhibition match is the best ever. Needs to be allowed to do it during a proper AFL game if the home team is up by 10 goals.

To be fair, you have to remember the mentality of the average footballer and commentator....

WOW, fancy that, Summa been run outta Fremantle. Now looks like being run outta.... where will he be run outta. Can't find a place called West Coast.
They are in a world of pain, the Yellas.Talking about the best 22 all year, Bringing back premiership players still considered among their best after six years on.
Mind you, I just hope they suffer in their kock straps for the next ten years... at least.I know jock straps went out a few years back, but some of their returnees would still be wearing them.
