Looks like us and the Aints will soon be the only perennial losers left
Imo they aren’t a club that will handle a head full of steam . Can see clubs that have gone deep in years prior picking them off. Will be a good team for a while though

That's a really impressive win from Melbourne.

In the first half I was all ready to do a sarcastic post about how Vic teams get credited for home wins and excused for losing away because 'interstate teams have such an advantage outside Victoria' but credit where it's due, they're looking like a legit flag heavyweight.

Semantics. Both were drafted as small forwards, both are playing as small forwards. The big difference is that one has embraced playing in the big league and one is still getting there.
It's not semantics. No question Pickett is currently a better player but they play a different role and are different players.

And as WTG points out, Henry didn't cost us Pickett. To get Pickett we needed to give up Serong or Young.

Dees are blessed in the injury department this year. No serious injuries to any key players. This allows them to fill the side with very good role players like spargo, Mcdonald, hunt, rivers, melksham, Langdon, etc. these kind of guys are operating at level of solid picks in the 20s.
Our bottom 6 each week are total passengers that would not get a look in at any of the top sides.
Duman, Watson, colyer, acres, crowden, Treacy would all be in the VFL and wouldnt get a look in to the 22 on either side tonight.
Until we have moved these guys out of the 22 (or some like Treacy have improved) we will be a long way off

Yeah dees very impressive, couldn’t have done anymore this season so far in beating every challenger that’s come their way .
Genuinely deserve to be premiership favs atm

Only question i think is whether they can sustain it right through the finals when “expectations “ will be enormous for them considering their past

Do we really have anything against Melbourne?
Their drafting is finally impressive with quality trades. Got the right one For May (for Hogan.. funny that). Weidemann and McDonald are upgrades on Jesse.
Their midfield is just beastly. Clayton Oliver is just incredible. Petracca and Gawn just make it awesome.
Funnily enough Lever and May are about Cox and Logue’s height. Seem like they’re over 200cm.

Ran em pretty close considering how dominant they’ve been since then. With injuries happening during the game.

Remember that year they were tanking under Bailey and suddenly doubled their interchange average against us because they'd pencilled us in for one of their wins?

We played along by being typically shit, but it always stung me that a team deliberately losing could so successfully identify us as an easy kill. Not sure whether to hate them or us.

I don't hate this current Melbourne team but I'll never forget that either.

What year was that? But have to admit Fremantle away are quite ripe for the kill.
Look at Carlton. It’s their freaking GF the past few seasons playing us. They know we’re ripe for the kill.

They are Vics. The umps did give them plenty of momentum in that 3rd quarter. Was shameful to watch.

2008. We were their first win for the year in R7. Which would have been fine, but if iirc the stats showed they suddenly doubled their interchanges that game after previously hamstringing their own team all year as part of their tanking strategy.

Luckily they got Scully and Trengrove out of it which showed the footy gods have some sense of justice.

You can do all the talking you like but you can’t win a flag in the AFL unless the majority of your elite talent is between the ages of 24 and 30.
Ours is 35 (Mundy), 30 (Walters) 29 (Fyfe).
Then there is a big gap to a clutch of players drafted from 2016 onwards aged 23 and under.
Luke Ryan (25) is really the only player on the list who is elite in his mid 20s.
Tabs is in his prime now too but is a very good support player and has been a slow burner, I can’t call him a true A grade key forward.
As potentially elite players like Darcy (22) Logue (23) Cox (22) cerra (21) Brayshaw (21), Sturt (21) Serong, Henry & Young (all 20) and the 2020 draft class move forward in the coming 2-3 years we will start to get very good.

It’s taken Christian Petracca about 7 years before he was fully trusted as a truly elite player of the competition.

I know Alex Pearce is 26 and potentially elite but I can’t count him as he hasn’t played consecutive games in over 2 years. Would be an amazing boost if he got back to his best and stayed fit.

Look below at the players in that 24-29 bracket at the club that play regularly now that I haven’t mentioned so far:
Conca
Colyer
Acres
Lobb
Wilson
Tucker
Hughes
Blakely
Switkowski
Aish

Apart from Fyfe and Tabs, this is our mid to late 20s core and it’s not very inspiring is it?
Between now and November 2023, at least 6 young players should arrive at the footy club that if drafted correctly, should push the majority of the above list out of the picture.
Then we will be ready to make a serious impact on this competition.

Easily my preferred choice for the flag this year.

Pretty accurate, but for someone as old as me I still remember the baby Bombers of 93.
Squad seriously lacking toughness, enforcers, but the kids are the standout.
Sheedy always surrounded the kids or tried to with hardened players.
But off the field it was Daniher that worked out Carltons midfield plan.
It’s the experience off the field that concerns me.
I just don’t see our game plan taking the competition by storm.
Just because we get plenty of inside 50 ball doesn’t mean it’s going to click.
A mature head, highly qualified would be welcome. It’s working for the Demons and Bombers, lead the Tigers out of the wilderness.
Freo have a soft underbelly, that’s not going to change unless the group is challenged.
