We are so used to simple easy solutions these days it's hard to spin an investment
The West Wing had a whole episode on 10 word answers, and their importance in political messaging but that was 25 years ago, rather than building an idea, one can be killed using 4 letter words, hell I used a three letter one that would have been more than enough.

It is clear that the AFL's rights requirement has outgrown what any coalition of Australian media companies can afford.

Maybe but you don't pick someone that doesn't have the infrastructure or the expertise to deliver it properly.

So how does he negotiate the purchase of a media asset in the West?!
It seems there are not sanctions against him in the West (he is a USA and UK citizen too!), just from Ukraine. Also he does donate big to the USA political parties (mainly Republicans), so that helps I assume!
But he does have ties with people that are sanctioned by the West.

A few weeks ago, I found myself in a used book store, I was reading from a book published in the 70s, whose topic was focused on the housing affordablity issues of the day, it explored how their has aways been a housing shortage since federation.

No government action in that area could really make a dent into it in the short term (won't stop people holding the goverenment accountable), especially as it is a large portion of nations retirement savings. I think the government creating an education to employment pipeline focused on construction, through a public corporation, harking back to the post ww2 construction boom, is probably our best bet, using a land tax of some kind to funds it. Can't see that winning an election though.

I'm not sure I agree with that.
The government can't completely solve the housing problem (as some of it is linked to where interest rates and broader financial markets are at and the govt can't control that).
But there's a lot it can do.

For example where I live down near Phillip Island there are dozens of good houses but they are simply kept vacant for air b Nb use as the tax system encourages it. Government should be bringing in legislation taxing vacant properties and limiting how many days per year you can air b Nb (you shouldn't leave it up to local councils who have self interest).
They absolutely should amend or abolish negative gearing and while the housing future fund is a start its nowhere near enough.
They need to invest far more in public housing stock particularly in the regions.

They also need to significantly address the lack of training options in regional areas (because I've worked in the recruitment space I see this every day) for young people to train for the building and construction sector (they have done this to a degree in capital cities but they haven't done it in the regions) by investing directly in more training hubs than they are.
They also need to address service delivery (particularly in access to appropriate hospital and health care and child care) in rural areas so that qualified trades with kids will actually move there because at the moment they won't and this is a key reason why not enough houses are being built.

The problem is the government won't address the tax issues because they don't want wealthy baby boomers booting them out and they either lack the skills or will to address the supply side issues.
But there's a lot they could do.

Unfortunately with something like housing you almost need an expert panel that will make evidence based investment decisions in these areas across the country and take it out of the government's hands-so politics doesn't get in the way. But I don't expect that to happen.

If the question was between a good product and an extra $100 million a year, they'd pick the money.

It is why Rugby Union is struggling, why cricket broadcasting is all over the place.

My fear is the sport being segregated over mutliple paywalls held by different companies.

Great post, I'll skip a detailed resposnes as I forgot that this is a football forum. It is aways intersting to read the perspectives of someone closer to the ground of an issue then myself (I have neither education or expierence in any related fields), it kind of reinforces that while it is possible that something could be done, any real solution would require an ambition that I don't think this country is capable of at this moment.

Foxtel has been sold

****ing great. Total first world issues but now it’s gonna cost more and be less effective.
They’ll gut the tech involved and outsource it all overseas to tech support that has no clue.

And Fox was shit.. the devil you know and all

Go Catters ..

The following teams will miss the top 8 next season:
Cats
Giants
Power
Some horrendous takes in that article.
Ports best players are either young, or in the right age bracket. Add in the home games, plus also the free hit in Gather Round, and Port won't miss finals. They won't win the flag, but I have them as high as 3rd and as low as 7th. Would need an injury plagued season to miss and these articles are never based around that.

Also don't see us missing the 8. Article points out that it wasn't our midfield that cost us, but our defence, totally ignoring that in a lot of games our defense got smashed because our midfield, especially in that horror run in the middle of the season, got completely obliterated. And it was our midfield, when Holmes got injured + Stanley not taking advantage of Brisbanes ruck getting a match ending injury early, that ended up costing us the PF.
Next year our midfield might be our strength, but it certainly wasn't this year. But with the games in Geelong, plus we have Bombers/Saints/Richmond twice who are teams I think will drop off.

GWS making finals will rely on if Green/Hogan/Himmelberg have big years, if Greene gets back to last years form, whether Stringer is in good form or de-stabilizing for their team, and if Taylor comes back and stays healthy.

In my opinion the teams at risk of dropping out of the 8 next season are:

Brisbane, who are a Hipwood injury away from their forwardline being totally ****ed and aren't a sure thing to get on a run again leading into finals. Plus we have see Premiers recently missing finals because the short offseason/celebrating tends to have that effect.
Western Bulldogs are my other pick, they were looking likely to miss finals relying on other teams to drop games while they got wins late in the season against a Swans team who had dropped off, a Demons team who were cooked, a trash North team and an inconsistent GWS in Tassie.

And once in finals Hawthorn dumped them out of finals comfortably.

And Sydney are a sneaky chance too. Swans have been in contention and at the top end of the table for a while under Longmuire and they keep getting battered in GFs, who knows what that will do to them. Maybe Cox is the difference maker and gets them that GF win. Or maybe the players are mentally cooked and have a dip, and in a tight season that can mean missing finals.

Thread title updated to reflect the start of a new year

And not the ideal type news we kick off the new year with - just as if it was one of our players, be mindful of comments in reply to this topic

I thought Richmond would need to save all its fight to get a win this year. Guess I was wrong.
Hope it gets resolved and ain’t due to some boof head baiting him.

Article says he handed himself into police, does that mean he Balta'd from the scene of the crime?
Curse of the 7 year contract strikes again.

JFC if you want to lose brain cells take a look at the thread on the Richmond forum discussing Noah Balta.

It's unclear what a Richmond player being charged with assault has to do with Geelong. But the thread is all about conspiracies to do with Geelong, Steve Hocking, Stengle, AFL corruption, etc.

How did their supporters end up so completely mentally cooked? It makes my dislike of Hawthorn look completely reasonable and rational.

Life experience has told me that attempting to talk footy with a Richmond supporter requires total disengagement of any and all brain cells.

It's a faster process for them though as they have few to disengage.

We have so much money foating around, what is the harm in using a small amount for bribes and crisis actors. It cost us less then we spent monthly Coffee, farm animal subsidies or even golf lessons for new draftees.

Our crisis actor moved in to a cheap house and land package down the road from Smith?

Heart-warming

Some of it is pretty light hearted and rational. I did enjoy this banger:

About time we won something, been a few years now.

Richmond won something already. They did the double.

Put out the last apology of the year for not saying Merry Christmas, and the first apology of the new year for Balta.
