Oppo Camp Non Geelong football (AFL) discussion 2025, Part 1

JFC if you want to lose brain cells take a look at the thread on the Richmond forum discussing Noah Balta.

It's unclear what a Richmond player being charged with assault has to do with Geelong. But the thread is all about conspiracies to do with Geelong, Steve Hocking, Stengle, AFL corruption, etc.

How did their supporters end up so completely mentally cooked? It makes my dislike of Hawthorn look completely reasonable and rational.
I've seen some of them mention Whateley being out to get Richmond too, which is crazy.
These people probably think the Earth is flat and the weather is being controlled and manipulated by the government.

Anyway, the 'rivalry' doesn't exist in real life and I remember myself and my Geelong supporting mates being happy for Richmond when they won the flag in 2017.
We were on Swan St and my mate ended up with a Richmond scarf while we were singing the Richmond theme song at various stages during the night.

Compare this to Hawthorn winning a flag and there is absolutely zero chance of being happy for them, let alone singing their theme song or wearing their merchandise.
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a Hawthorn scarf, and I know my mate wouldn't either.

Corrupt Football League strikes again!
I doubt he gets jail time, but is the 4 match ban just the AFL being safe until his court date? Id imagine if he was in bigger trouble the AFL still gives him a small suspension and increase it pending. Or perhaps it doesn't matter because if he is jailed then his contract is likely null and void.

But then I assume the legal system makes him pay a fine and gives him a slap on the wrist.

Slap on the wrist nothing surer. Afl learning to cover its bases for once

Would have been a worse punishment to make him play the first 4 games of the season.

Wonder if its 6 to 10 games if he wasn't an important player at a bigger club.

I couldn't help myself and wandered over to their board. Apparently if he was a "scat" he'd get off scott free, like all of our other players.
Wild, Richmond only suspended him for 4 weeks, we initially suspended Steve Johnson "until round six" and had him train with our VFL team and that was just for public drunkenness he didn't even assault someone, and Johnson was a significantly better player at that time than Balta is.

I guess some clubs take indiscretions more seriously.

On a semi-related note, I saw a Reddit post the other day about Steve Johnson and the 2013 Brownlow count. One Pies supporter was bemoaning that we were ready to give him away after 2006 but he failed the medical...then was an absolute star from 2007 on.

It does seem that Harley and the leadership team giving him that 5-6 weeks off was the major wake-up call / turning point that he needed.

I saw that thread, he showed a lot of talent before 2007 but his off field stuff was a major issue. Wonder if he would have matured at the Pies and gone on to be the legend he was or if he would have got caught up with the "rat pack" and never hit his potential.

Also obligatory "Selwood was robbed in 2013".
