Sam Mitchell to take over from Alistair Clarkson in 2023? Thoughts in this succession plan?
I wouldn't be surprised if Sam Mitchell takes over next season and Alistair Clarkson moves onto the Blues or the Suns.
Or maybe Clarkson moves on from the Hawks in 2022 as expected, takes a year off in 2023 and then we grab him for the senior coach role at our club for 2024 and beyond, while Fages then takes up a Head of Coaching position at our club to help mentor our players and coaches in the future part-time, after retiring from being a 3x premiership coach at the Brisbane Lions ;)

A succession plan from Fages to Clarkson?
Nice!

....he might move up to Brisbane beforehand and just "look in" to see what 'ol mate Fages is up too. He'll have had a good rest by then and ready to go again.

Our own succession plan. Oh, I love it! :grinv1:

Don't scupper my plans to grab Luke Hodge as head coach and get the 3 x Hodge boys through academy !! ;):D

LOL, I was actually thinking something similar to that other day but thought Nah way too early to post.

I do not want to lose Fagan when he decides to call it a day as the senior coach and was mulling around the idea of having him as Head of "club culture", not sure of exact definition/purpose... maybe a role say over the top of Andrew Crowell our head of welfare.

Hopefully Fages loves it up here and wants to spend his golden years in the Queensland sun, plenty of nice places to walk around Bulimba (they even have a Lawn Bowls club) and surrounds.

Come to think about it, what is our succession plan? Fagan won't be coaching forever, nor would he want too considering his age and the stress that is involved in the job. I would love for Fagan or the club to pick out our next coaching candidate and have him work in the system for a while before Fagan hands over the reigns to him

I don't want to lose our Fagan either but I also don't him physically stressed out working at the head-coaching role for the next 5-10 years for the club, especially due to the fact that he is in his 60s now. I rather him to enjoy himself in his golden years without much stress and something like Head of Culture would be a nice job role for him in the long-term, while Clarkson takes the reigns as the senior coach in 2024 and Hodge comes on as a senior assistant as well ;)

I wouldn't be also surprised though if Fages does return to Tasmania for his golden years, after he has finished with the club (whenever that is) to be the inaugural GM/Head of Football in the future for the Tasmania Football Club (in the future) over there.

I've heard Michael Voss or Justin Leppitsch are available again ;) 🤣

Seriously though, I think we have got quite a couple of options within our club alone, if we wanted to choose that way, like Tapping, Davis, Stone, Daly, Hodge, etc.

Or do we look on the outside and find the best coach possible available, it's going to be mighty interesting what we choose either way, but we need to decide on that matter sooner rather then later so we our club doesn't stumble into irrelevance again for the next 10 years like previously.

If I was making the decision in the future, prettly simply it would be Clarkson takes the reigns as the senior coach in 2024, Hodge comes on as a senior assistant while Fagan can take up a Head of Culture role, like Jason mp mentioned to, if he wants that position at the club and also, lets not forget to bring back our Noble home to be our new CEO at the Brisbane Lions as well 😍

Fages' ability to coax his ex-Hawthorn connections to the Lions is a testament to his people skills.

Got Hodge here for two years when it looked like he (Hodge) was done and dusted.

It was a brilliant move both culturally and from a value added (to the playing group) point of view

Hodge wasn't just a figurehead, he was bloody brilliant as a Lions player and became fully invested in the Brisbane Lions as a club.

Birchall, a lower profile acquisition is frequently the subject of calls to be dropped but keeps on keeping on and rarely makes blatant errors. Fages keeps playing him and if we believe in our coach, we must believe in his judgement to keep putting him in our side.

Clarkson/Fagan was a winning combination at Hawthorn.

It may be a pipe dream but Clarko taking up a Head Coach position here at some future time with Fages still heavily involved sounds like a brilliant idea to me.

One thing we have done well as a club since Leigh came here in 1999 is to engender a genuine love of the club from imported greats of other clubs

Fages is a young 60 . If he continues to have success at the club there's no reason why he can't keep going for a while yet. I'm sure there'll be a succession plan put in place at some point.

He seems to be highly skilled at delegation and trusting the right people which lessens his load and probably aids his longevity in the caper.

Alex Ferguson was 71 when he finished managing Manchester United in a spectacularly successful stint at the club.

We should be more like the US where head coaches go on for ever. No need to worry about him burning out if he is surrounded by great people and structures. We toss people away too early and too easily.

Fages is going to be a hard act to follow so it will have to be someone really really good to take over.

Fages to Clarkson to Hodge to Zorko;)

I'm not sure about zorko as head coach. I think you need a calm, consistent approach and those aren't word used to describe zorko. Given his age, don't see massive changes to his approach happening.

Definately an assistant coach.

The same could have been said about Clarkson during his playing days.
