I reckon there'll be an early meeting at Punt Road tomorrow between Damien Hardwick and Richmond's fitness staff. They look nowhere near ready for the start of the season. Hardwick desperately pulling players off so no one gets injured.
It's one thing to taper for the start of the season, but it looked like they had some really underdone players out there. Don't want to be making your gains this late in the pre-season

Sounds familiar

GUN GOLD Coast midfielder Dion Prestia will wait until the bye in mid-June before thinking about his next contract with the Suns.

At that time Prestia, David Swallow, Gary Ablett and Jaeger O'Meara were a super midfield. The quartet has not played together since Ablett hurt his shoulder in round 17, 2014.

The Suns midfield could be in a bit of trouble in 2017 if Prestia and O'Meara leave in addition to Ablett (age) and Swallow both generally struggling to stay fit in recent year.

Interesting also that GWS' Whitfield and Stewart also have big offers from Vic clubs to leave at the end of 2016.

The AFL have to be kidding themselves if they're going to further reduce the access the northern AFL clubs academies have to their home grown talent given the growing body of evidence that Victorian based clubs are going out their way to target Victorian kids at the northern clubs.

Irrespective, the AFL has a massive issue on its hands in regards to the declining long term player retention of drafted players not from those northern states sticking around beyond their first and to a lesser extent second contracts, although I just don't see the AFL caring particularly with Gil as a lap dog to all the powerful Victorian clubs Presidents and now the ex-Hawthorn President joining the AFL Commission.

It's becoming abundantly obvious that there aren't level playing fields for the northern clubs and to simplify it somewhat, exist purely so the AFL can cash in on their lucrative TV rights deals.

Wellingham will apparently miss round 1 with a knee problem, West Coast are going to be missing quite a few at this rate.

Go to Pies board to see what is their thoughts on Aish... See this

At first it made me laugh but then I thought... we did draft him with a top 10 pick (pick 7)
It's a completely nonsense article though because we know that the one thing Aish doesn't have a problem with is decision-making and kicking. If Connolly said Aish had a problem with footpace, strength or stamina maybe it wouldn't be so laughable.

The thread's pretty funny though.

Are you serious?

They are the exact two things that were Aish's weakness in his first two years. Shitting himself under pressure and often times kicking around the corner to no one in particular with a pretty weak kick.

But if that's what you think, knock yourselves out.

To be honest I was a little disappointed with his footskills and decision making (he seemed to panic under pressure) in his time with us, given his pre draft hype. In saying that, his contested work was probably better than advertised. Connolly may be right in that he won't be best 22 at times this year, but I'm sure he'll work out fine long term.

This I am unsure of. I think everyone is watching his game to find something good while overlooking all of his weaknesses (due to being a high pick). I think if he was drafted in the 30-50 range I doubt he would be in the Pies best 22

Yeah but the reason why he always finds himself under pressure is because he doesn't have the footpace to get into situations where he isn't under extreme pressure. When he actually does get clear his disposal and decision-making is pretty good and something that we need.

I agree in that I think he has plenty of things to work on and is far from a guarantee. I'd be surprised if he turned out to be a star, but I think he'll work out fine long term, as in a solid best 22 player.

Yeah that's my view as well. He has a relatively low ceiling for a top 10 pick but his skills are something that we currently lack and if he becomes a regular best 22 player I'll be happy. Can't see him becoming any better than a top 12-22 player on a list though given his physical limitations.

I hope so. Does seem the type to only reach solid foot solider in the squad. Hopefully he does well at Collingwood

When Aish has time and space, he can display some class. Under pressure though...

I watched the 2014 round 21 v Collingwood (the one when Collingwood lost a few to injury, just before and early in the game). Aish collected 19 disposals, and only one was counted as a clanger. Now, I don't know what exactly is officially counted as a clanger, because if you go and have another look at that game, you will see most of his 7 kicks were shocking scrubbers or turnovers resulted. A lot of his handballs were pretty errant as well. Got plenty of the ball, but mostly made a meal of it.
Granted, that was his first year, but it was also his better year of the 2. His output last year was pretty unimpressive, so probably a bit hard to judge at this stage. I certainly don't think you could credit him with having a particular strength, just yet. Weaknesses though, have been seen. Disposal is definitely a weakness for him to date.

Not good on the wing and not grunty enough for a full time midfield role.

If he doesn't improve his kicking, the half back role will be given to someone else pretty quickly.

He isn't going to flop like Karnezis or anything but can't see him ever being a superstar.

There is a reason a lot of Lions supporters weren't all that fussed we lost him, Yeo on the other hand left us devastated.

Edwards and Conca out for a while by the looks of things. Tigers could be in some trouble if they lose a couple early and lose some confidence.
They had a good base injury wise, only had one player (fringe) not available for selection going into the game. They are going as good as anyone, still.
