With Rugby's state of origin on tonight (a rip off of the Aussie Rules tradition of State of Origin that we sadly abandoned), I thought out of sheer boredom that I'd construct some Nationality of Origin sides for current AFL players (I'd even allow past players actually). We'd first determine the country then the area (eg, Eastern Europe, Africa etc)

Italy - Fiora, Giansiracusa, Prestigiacomo, Iacobucci, Licuria, Ricciuto, Camporeale, Carrazzo

Greece - Koutoufides

Germany - Hennemann, Minson

South Africa - Cupido

Albania - Yze

Feel free to add yours.

Also I'd be interested to know the nationalities of players like Pavlich, Petrie, Sylvia etc

Rugby League's (not Rugby) SOO matches supersede the traditional uninspiring interstate games of some years ago and have been a huge success. Players might even value a state jumper over an international one.

Your NOO "sheer boredom" idea might well be worth developing further. The guy who suggested League's SOO matches was probably considered a dill initially. Maybe a push could be made for NOO AFL games, say, Australian Born versus the Rest of The Word. (The ROW players limited to those with at least one non Australian grandparent.)

Such an innovation might just work. Can't you just see Mr. Crow leading the ROW cheersqad!?

NOO would be great watching.
PC is the only enemy as it could be seen divisive.

We could have a mini World Cup which would get a lot of international attention.

Australia
Great Britain
Indigenous Allstars.
Italy.
Europe Allstars
Rest of the WOrld.

Indgenous Allstars to play Australia in the final.

How many of these players were actually born overseas though ?

I would suggets most of them are 2nd or 3rd generation Australians.

It makes the game more like Surname of Origin. Then the only Australian side would be the aboriginal side.

For a rep calender, I think AFL's best bet would be every two years Int. Rules vs Ireland.

Every 4 years a round robin SOO, 4/5 weeks after the grand final.

So

2005 Australia vs Ireland in Australia
2007 Australia vs Ireland in Ireland
2008 Victoria, SA, WA, NSW+ACT, Qld in a 5 week tournament, playing each other once, + top 2 final.

Repeat every 4 years.

That was kind of the point though. You'd struggle to find many players born overseas so this is the closest thing we have.

Italy would be the best represented team I'd imagine.
