Wiki covers the details:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposed_relocation_of_the_North_Melbourne_Football_Club

Basically, north's shareholders wanted to move north (they had the power under the club's old constitution). The north members cracked the shits and mobilised to stop any move. The club's constitution was amended after that.
Awesome. Thanks for doing the legwork for me.

Im finding it odd how much north is getting talked about at the moment. In my opinion its your own fault for beating brisbane because at least then it would be deserved but with a #1pick

Instead of writing into the Constitution: 'North Melbourne football club can never relocate.'

The choice was made to allow for it in the future, if a 70 percent majority is reached.

Not sure how such votes are called on, but if they were struggling (millions in the red, bottoming out, future bleak etc) and the AFL presented the following two options:

1) 'You agree to move to Tassie/ the NT and we give you an extra 1st and 2nd round PP for the next 3 years, a generous Academy zone (Tassie and the entire NT), 10 percent extra cap player retention allowance (because those areas suck), and 10 million a year cash from the equalisation/ expansion fund for the next decade,' or
2) We pull the plug and you fold.

You call a vote.

**** it. Im not particularly connected to Carlton the actual geograpic area myself, and I watch most games on the telly. The club is the club no-matter where it's physcially based. Id want us to at least consider such an offer.

Of course, there are some that say 'it's better to die on your feet, than on your ******* knees begging'

Like that preacher dude from Alien 3.
Pretty much the circumstances you outlined. But even then, the situation north were in 2007 is that much worse than north's current position, it's not worth the comparison. Hell, even the list was much, much worse off than it is now. You may not rate north's current list or even know a name outside brown, but at least north poster's can see the potential, we really couldn't at the end of 2007.

If north didn't take the money in 2007, they wouldn't now, constitution or not.

It's a combination of things.

Latest club linked to a major relocation.
Start of a rebuild.
Tasmanian games.
Quiet trade period.
A lack of a media defender with JB moving on, so we have to cop relocation and list bagging garbage from disgusting vermin like Jabba the Hutch.
A bit of a chip on the shoulder comment, but the whole norf thing (linked to the 2007 relocation stuff) has retained its power over many opposition posters, with it often being the leading site hashtag.

Every club has supporters that dont help the cause. I really cant even understand how its even offensive to say norf to a north supporter. Its barely even insulting.

Or does that also have more to it that i dont know

The Swans were at their lowest ebb a decade after relocating, and Brisbane won 15 games total and a spoon in the two seasons after the merger. Take out 2001-2004, and the Brisbane Lions have been Richmond 2002-2016 levels of ordinary.
You cant just 'take out' a three-peat.
You may as well say 'take out Hiroshima' and Japan won WW2.

It's like this thread, it annoys the older north supporters that were heavily involved in saving the club and was a term heavily associated with the demise of north as a club.

I don't really care either way. I use it on the bay myself, but don't like it on the mb, as we are suppose to be a little more respectful on this board.

In saying all that, a few north posters over the years have been less than pleasant on the boards and have ruined the majority of the reputation of north bf posters. So I don't blame opposition posters for using the term or giving north grief, I would too in their position.

You do have a decent teamboard :thumbsu: always enertaining. And im not saying just for trolling/lurking whatever it is. Many just aren't very enertaining. I love the north and stkilda boards because <redacted>

</redacted>
And im not going to say anymore because my opinion might upset too many people whos quotes i dont want to read.

But its basically what i already thought about the insult. I will still use it on the bay when the timing feels right

You can't also hang onto it as evidence of long-term success over a 20 year period, either.

In 13 of the other 16 seasons post merger, Brisbane has missed finals, and had no more than 10 wins in each of those years, and that includes 8 bottom-four finishes in there as well. They've made the finals once in the last 13 years. Even Fitzroy made it twice in their final 13 years pre-merger.

Brisbane's cause has not been helped by the GC. The GC have really been a stuff up imo.
Only room for one team in SEQ. Lions should be playing some home games on the GC each year.

Absolutely. I'd rather the club die as North Melbourne than live on as some sort of 'Tassie Kangaroos' abomination. In the event that they did, I'd stop supporting them anyway. And I say that as a Tasmanian.

Same and this probably goes for 80% of current north fans/members.

Solution to being boxed in. The reason players are avoiding North isn't that they aren't paying (they were offering Dusty a King's ransom), it's because there is no interest because they could play at a club with a better list, facilities and culture just down the road at clubs like Essendon, Western Bulldogs or Melbourne. And about the membership, let's go worst case scenario as say if North relocated they would lose half their members. That makes 20,000. Now let's be REALLY pessimistic and say a mere 5% of Tasmania's population become members, that 25k ~ 30k from that, growing the membership and building and solidifying a fanbase from Hawthorn. 50k members + AFL subsidies + new facilities + potential new stadium. Sounds like a good deal for you guys.

Melbourne/Dogs have a better culture?

Didn't take long for the jungle drums to start after one poor season though. The conduct of the ARU vis-à-vis Western Force (offering financial assistance when in dire straits then screwing the Force once they had secured control of their licence) is not something I'd put past the AFL

They were an expansion team, located in a region where Essendon were not only located but extremely popular. Never have they had a large amount of support. This is not a new thing but it needs to change for the Kangaroos to continue well into the future. The only way to get themselves a strong supporter base is to give them a market to represent. Tassie would absolutely get around that club.

complete and utter garbage....club was established in 1869...yes always a small supporter base, go through our history and have a look at how many hall of fame inductees this small club has produced...not to mention arguably the best player of all time....oh yeah he always beat up your mob....

All I can say is that I am overwhelmed by the concern for my club and I look forward to all of you football loving people supporting Norths application for a priority pick in 2018.

Rankine, Lukosius, Blakey, Thomas, Scott and Crocker will form the core of our triple premiership push and alleviate all of your concerns.

Didnt the club disband in the 70's, only to be reborn later out of Hotham? (Forget the exact details, asking as such not telling)

North Melbourne changed title to Hotham in 1877, in line with the changing of the shire name from North Melbourne to Hotham. When the name Hotham reverted back to North Melbourne in 1888, the club again followed suit. It was still effectively the same club.

Clubs were not the entities back then that they are now. They were supported under the banners of the local councils for the recreation of the citizens of their respective shires. The Richmond football club didn't even exist when the North/Hotham name change initially occurred.

Things have changed a bit since then, as this picture of down town Richmond circa 1890 highlights

I get it. I get the same feel when people us plastic, and it's treated the same by the mods. It's not so much the haters wanting to insult the club, thats meh and the price of being successful enough to threaten.

.It's more the way it becomes the norm and entrenched. Even more than North the average oppo footy fan ( Swans excepted) isnt going to get pulled up much by our supporters, so there are no natural brakes.
