Well done to North and Clarkson getting a win yesterday, well deserved after a tough year. A good statement saying we don’t need pick one or handouts going forward.
Says the Melbourne fan… couldn’t make this stuff up 😆😆

We’ve received them.. no one else should because reasons.

lol can’t judge a comment without looking at the posters team of support.
Where did I say no one else should receive them? North themselves made the statement, not me.

Ironic coming from a demons fan. A team that uses early pics on Colin Sylvia, Tom Scully, Jack Watts, Jimmy toumpas and other compo picks on Liam Jurrah lol

Wouldn't a Melbourne fan be the most qualified to comment on this, considering none of those picks worked out?

don’t get why the team I support makes me congratulating North on their win ironic?

Yes teams down the bottom of the ladder get early picks. Recent years North have had quite a few and get another early one this year with pick 2.

He went alright today. So did Kayne Turner. It was surreal.

I did call Dan Howe was going to save North from winning a spoon.

The whole Flanders in the North NGA doesn't make sense - I thought they blocked NGA's being bid matched in the first round?
I think it’s top 40. His name is Sanders not Flanders, but I don’t get is he’s not part of North’s NGA, so why is he potentially getting thrown in now? Does he have a choice? Does he want to be part of their academy and go to North?

Those are extremely good questions. (I also believe it is top 40).

The application for him to be recognised as NGA went in quite some time ago. IIRC he's on an indigenous scholarship at a Melbourne school and has been listed in Norths NGA program since he was 13/14.

Fantastic win by North - that’s the kind of culture changer that inspires a team going into an off-season, not receiving handouts.

That said, here’s a snapshot into some of the North fans from this thread and their mindsets while watching the game yesterday.

Sad Kristen Bell GIF
Some real weirdos may have had that mindset. The vast majority were absolutely delighted. After 20 straight losses or whatever it is it was a fantastic feeling. Super happy for Eddie Ford too.

Is there a place where NGA players are documented like there is for Northern academies? My (limited) understanding was that both mckercher and Sanders were in the NGA when they were little kids but in mckercher's case not since then, and in sanders' case only this year (which I believe makes him ineligible based on the current rules).

Really I am asking if there is a place where we can find more information (google did not help me).

According to Ryley he first spoke with North Melbourne when he was 15, can’t find any information that he’s ever been listed in the NGA program.

It's kind of hard to know. I suspect North do things a bit different in Tassie. I don't think there are barriers to non-nga players participating at a young age for instance and as you see in the above link, Sanders is in this list as is McKercher. Sanders is indigenous and McKercher isn't. I can't find a list of NGA players recorded with the AFL anywhere and assume everyone has to apply. It is muddied by the fact that Sanders has been in Victoria for the last two years but he's on an indigenous scholarship at a Melbourne school. Maybe the AFL are trying to determine whether he is eligible for the NGA academy for Tasmania given he is now in Melbourne? **** knows. At one stage it looked like they were questioning his heritage which was a little on the nose.

Maybe if he was likely to be a late draft pick they may have just signed it off...

He's listed above in the NGA Academy from 2018 when he would have been 13 but then so are other players who don't qualify so who knows. Not speaking to him in an official capacity until he was 15 doesn't preclude him from being in the academy. The whole thing is pretty opaque.

That is my understanding too. He and mckercher were in the nga at 12 or 13 but not since. I wish there was more information available.

It just feels like we are working from a position of such ignorance.

whether he is eligible for North's academy isn't the issue

I read talk of him being a first rounder - 1st Rounders aren't eligible to be matched since the horseshit Ugle-Hagan situation meant the wooden spoon team didn't get pick 1

Melbourne missed Mac Andrew through the new rule, so are they just gonna bend it for North?

They are considering changing the rules for everyone now. From AFL.com.au:

NGA BIDDING CHANGES DISCUSSED

THE POTENTIAL to align the Next Generation Academy bidding system with the northern Academy rules is among the suggestions put forward by clubs as the AFL reviews its NGA system.

The League has had ongoing reviews of the NGA system – its rules, the access to talent for clubs, the eligibility process – across the year, with club views strong on questioning the pick 40 threshold on when they are able to match bids on NGA products.

Clubs have felt that benchmark for priority access to Indigenous and multicultural prospects in the draft was too late to warrant huge investment in the programs without the benefit of the best players within their zones.

Northern Academy clubs, like those with father-sons, have access to matching bids at any stage of the draft, with limitations only on how many per season clubs inside the top eight and top four can take inside the top 20 picks.

But club feedback on NGA provisions will be put forward on the Academy bidding systems aligning, while other clubs have suggested that clubs should need to retain a selection within a certain range of where the bid could come on a player so that they cannot trade out of a pick and match with later picks and points.

While the review is undergoing this year, any possible changes wouldn't be brought in until the 2024 draft. – Callum Twomey
