North Melbourne supporter punches Daniel Motlop

Needs to be told sternly that if he wants to fly the flag for his club it had better be attached to the end of a stick.

He acknowledged the security guard afterwards when he came over to chat about. If he's clever he'll send an apology to Port and that should be the end of it in this case. Hardly comes across as a serial offender.

Let this guy off, and suddenly it's open season for other idiots to have a go.

I agree with this. I think the guy feels like shit right now realising he was an idiot.

We do remember the guy who got in Dean Laildeys face a few years ago very publicly wasn't alive the next morning. Sometimes these people have other things going on in their lives and are taking it out in the wrong place.

But the lesson needs to be forward about expected behaviour. 2 Years about right.

ban him for the rest of the season from attending any AFL games. (life is a bit much...it was just a brain fart he would regret)

Can't let this slip, need to send a strong message and let others know it isn't condoned.

I don't condone what the fan did but Motlop kicked the ball low and hard into the cheersquad. Not saying he did it intentionally either, but he's a prick and I wouldn't be surprised.

That guy probably took exception to that.

Short answer is don't sit near the fence behind the goals if you don't want footballs kicked at your head.

It's kind of like all those people at the local footy who park behind the goals and crack the shits when their car gets hit...

I'm still wondering how either could seriously be enforced? I mean, if this guy was banned for the season/life and felt like going to the MCG (or better yet, an interstate ground) next month in plain clothes, would he really be barred from entering?

As for the guy being the full quid, well I don't think it's very relevant. The issue is the safety of the players. I don't think the guy who stabbed Monica Seles was a Mensa candidate.

Saw the replay.

there was no aiming at the cheer squad

add to that cheer squads are not special despite what they think and if you don't want to get hit by the player who has every right to kick a goal how he likes sit somewhere else.

Come on lets not take things too seriously, footy is a phyisical game... I'm sure Motlop is not too concerned, four goals now and Port a fighting chance...

The guy is an idiot, but the incident was very amusing for mine...

That's a pretty ignorant view Paddy. Hypothetically, what if he did it with a bottle, or worse still, was armed. We are blessed in this country with an opportunity to get up close and personal with our sports stars. What happened here, although minor, shows that there is potential for a much more severe incident.

Moronic act. Deserves a lengthy ban (inasmuch as it can be enforced) and expulsion from the cheersquad and club membership.

Look, he didn't hurt Motlop, but a very clear line has to be drawn and people stomped on when they cross that line. To do otherwise makes a nastier incident more likely if people don't see some immediate, harsh follow up. And if that happens, as someone else mentioned, we'll end up with fences separating us from the players and lose something special from our game.

A lifeban is probably too much, but at least the rest of the season, maybe next year as well. Lifetime ban from the cheer squad.

He didn't and he wasn't. Probably pretty bad if he shot him too but he didn't.
**** me.

True, but the line has to be completely objective, not subjective, as in NO AGGRESSIVE CONTACT AT ALL

Once you allow a soft punch like that, and say it was nothing, you actually have to draw an arbitary line somewhere else, and determine what level force punch is actionable, like the bloody match review panel.

It's thin-end-of-the-wedge- stuff.

You lay down the law early on, it avoids problems down the track; spectators don't get it into their heads that punching is not allowed, but just 'slapping' a player will be ok, for example

Interesting comment considering the way the game has enraged fans with bewildering decisions. Thanx to red + black for posting the new tube clip of the incident. Nothing in it really. Foolish act if anything and at least the offender can be commended for leaving immediately. Will feel terrible with himself. Hopefully he can write a letter to Daniel Motlop to opoligize for his brain snap. Doesn't warrant anything more than a smack on the wrist. The act of remorse on his behalf was enough to convince that he is sorry. End of story.

If supporters are allowed to reach out and 'touch players' without the player acknowledging contact, surely there is a fine line to what the offender did today and someone else without club support identification giving a player a harsher back slap. C'mon people, lots of overreaction going on.

On the field maybe but not from some idiot sitting behind the fence. We can make a joke all we like about the strength of the hit but it really is irrelevant - he hit a player and while this guys intent maybe wasn't that serious if an example is not made then the next guy may not be so limp wristed - he needs to be given at least a years ban. Would we also be dismissive of this situation had Motlop retalisated what would of been the consequences for Motlop all because some idiot had a brain freeze behind the goal.

We don't want to end up like India and Europe where there are large fences separating the spectators and players and examples have to be made everytime something like this occurs.

Didn't say it was nothing, he was an idiot and he was either kicked out or left before he was kicked out. End of story.

Deal with things on their merits. If someone is going to go to the footy and stab a player that runs to the fence I doubt a life ban imposed on someone else the week before will put them off.
