If we had won on Sunday I would have put this down as a definite defeat. As North ran Sydney close, and are due a win, I still think they'll get up over us unfortunately.

Is there any thread that doesn't just dissolve into boring negativity? I used to enjoy this board but not anymore. Thank goodness we haven't gone through a period of losing like Richmond.

Amen.

I don't think I'd ever visit BF if Adelaide went through a heavy and consistent losing period  Would be unbearable.

People need to get over Sunday.

Huh? If we had beaten Brisbane, this would be a loss. But now that we lost to Brisbane... it will still be a loss?

I almost think the 1 point loss could've taken a lot out of them physically and mentally. Sydney wore them out massively. Also expect our forward line to dominate with their two tall defenders in Pratt & Firrito out. They're going to have a brand new, untried defence and we really should be able to take advantage of that.

You would think so, but the way our mids kick to the forward line....

Seriously need the ball in Wright, Smith, Jaencsh and Vinces hands more when getting the ball into the forward line.

Genuinely no troll - I don't troll other people's board - but I reckon we'll pump you. Ten goals.

We've been 'on' even in the games we've lost recently and showed against both Melbourne and Port that we can score quickly and heavily when we kick straight.

You guys seem really flat and vulnerable.

Out of our next 5 games this one is probably our most likely of a victory. I can't remember the order exactly but we have North, West Coast, Bulldogs and Geelong coming up. Bulldogs and Geelong away and I dont fancy us against West Coast at the moment. Hate the Sunday games but I will be watching for sure.
I'm not saying you won't win but I would think you have more chance of beating the Bulldogs than beating North. They are in shit form. The Roos aren't in shit form they just have the yips in front of goal. Was at their game on the weekend and if they had have kicked straight they would have beaten Sydney pretty easily. I also think people here are thinking back of North under Laidley. Under Scott they don't appear to play the boring defensive crap. Anyway good luck.

That's what we like to hear! It's when the opposition says "you'll thrash us" that we get worried, here on the Adelaide board.

Running away now, before I deliver kiss of death...

I wouldn't be surprised if you do pump us. Shit teams love to smash us and you guys are pretty rubbish so it's basically guaranteed.

Pratt and Firitto are not our tall defenders, but have been taking the mid sized forwards and trying to provide run off the backline. Some would say Firitto was on the chopping block anyway as his form has been really poor.

Our tall defenders will be Luke Delaney, who has played 2 games and will match up on Tippet I reckon and either Scott Thompson or Robbie Tarrant, whose defensive work in the seconds has been exceptional and should come in for Firitto. Both Delaney and Tarrant are 6'5 and solid young men, although inexperienced.

As for our form, we have been very patchy with our disposal killing us. Despite poor field kicking we are still getting 55 inside 50's a game but butchering the ball in front of goal. If this continues we will struggle. If we maintain our inside 50 ratio and kick straight we will be in with a good shot of scoring 100+.

north have been unlucky not to have at least 5 or 6 wins on the board.

Looking at our form line over the last 5 weeks it has been.

Lose playing horrible football one week and than coming out the next week with three good quarters and one bad quarter leading to a possibly victory with a one shocking quarter costing us victory against carlton and collingwood.

Our best football is better than norths so if we turn up 100% switch on we will win, its just been able to do it on a more consisent basis.

so this season has not been all doom and gloom.

This. Lindsay Thomas has kicked 11.24 this year. Liam Jurrah has kicked 24.10.

If Lindsay has kicked what Liam has, we'd have won against Richmond, Brisbane and Sydney. We were also desperately unlucky against West Coast, who have been shown to be a decent team.

We are very much up and about and I'm pleased that for a young team, its our clearances and inside 50s etc that are going well.

I'm quite confident this week.

I realise I have probably put a giant mozz on us and will probably have to crawl back and cop my whack.

Will be listening on the radio so I don't destroy the television. This could be the butcherfest of the season.:(

North will let us get a small lead then kick the next 20 goals unanswered.

So I went to this game, probably the only match I will get to in person this year, and what an experience it was

I was all set to make a player-by-player breakdown, but couldn't find a "Thoughts on the North Melbourne Game" thread, crikey. I guess it's a bit late to start one myself.

SO

Overall - I thought we made a solid effort. Lacked some confidence, sharpness, organisation at times, but it's not like the players gave up at any point. Basically beaten by the better team. I felt the players lacked some energy, hard to tell whether that's due to lack of motivation, confidence, or talent.

We were pretty efficient up forward, Johncock was amazing in defence. Through the midfield, I think their pressure was a bit better than ours. And obviously Swallow got a million clearances.

Graham Johncock - really really good
Richard Douglas - solid, tried hard. Good 4th string mid.
Bernie Vince - solid, tried hard. Good 4th string mid. Needs to lift if we are to be any good at all.
Rory Sloane - is a ripper
Kurt Tippett - it turns out he can take contested marks when [certain other key forward at AFC] isn't bringing his defender over to every contest.
Matthew Jaensch - nice disposal, bit of a diver, reasonable defensive skills
Scott Thompson - when your best midfielder has a game like this...good 3rd string mid.
Sam Jacobs - well beaten
Brent Reilly - solid, tried hard. Good 4th string mid.
Patrick Dangerfield - is a ripper
Chris Knights - okay
Jack Gunston - very promising, seemed to make the forward line better through his presence. Will get more games
Nathan Van Berlo - No awareness, no skills, no physical presence, no defensive mentality. But very fit.
Michael Doughty - solid game, kept Harvey fairly quiet and also made some good team defensive plays
Matthew Wright - solid, tried hard
Luke Thompson - lots of good spoils, is good as long as he doesn't panic
Ben Rutten - falls over, can't keep up on the lead, but will neutralise any high ball regardless the opposition. needs his weaknesses to be covered by the team, which is not happening right now.
Ricky Henderson - okay
James Sellar - terrible. not afl standard.
Jared Petrenko - terrible. not afl standard.
Brad Symes - subbed on for Petrenko, was okay.
Brad Moran - terrible. not afl standard.

Objectively, our midfield would have to be one of the least-talented in the AFL. Our defence is a combination of aging and inexperienced. And our forward line is pretty much entirely inexperienced.

Our game-plan relies on a coherent team who understand the strategy and where they fit in, which also we don't have.

Finally, we had 3-4 players who are not just questionable AFL level, but are actually nowhere near the level.

On the one hand, I stand by my view that we should have tanked in the hope of a Trengove or two a few years ago.

On the positive side, some of our young players have some talent, which is a miracle considering. But regardless of who is coaching, it will be at least a couple of years before they are capable of lifting us to a competitive position, and that's only if they develop as we might hope.
