Roast North's Daw racially taunted in VFL

Didnt read this article but MMM said it wasn't even security that threw him out, it was our own Donald McDonald.

Not quite, Donald directed the police to the guy, police escorted him out. Disgusting incident. Enforced education of this mental midget is required. What Majak is bringing to football is amazing, such an athlete. Hope he moves on from this to become the footballer we knew he can be.

Absolutly disgusting behavior. I suppose the question is 'why'. What has our man Majak ever done to him?

Mark 'Robbo' Robinson:

10 Things I Don't Like

1. Does it have to be said: Racism

Not talking Eddie McGuire here, because that was run-of-the-mill abuse. We're talking about the peanut who abused Majak Daw and the uproar which followed. Twiiter, fan forums, reader comments, radio phone-ins ... it would seem the world has awakened. And to the peanut, seriously, you think it's cool? You're just like the bloke at Launceston who went Buddy Franklin: Dumb, redneck coward.

There's no place for racism in sport full-stop. Being of Croatian descent & not having a full grasp of the English language as I do now, I was racially verified many times during my tennis career but sometimes you just gotta take a stance & one dodo from an Eastern suburbs tennis club learnt his lesson when I grabbed some of the saw dust from my pocket (ala Ivan Lendl) & blew it in his face as he went to shake my hand after the game. Sure, that resulted in some cut-lunches being thrown & me copping a 3 month suspension (which cost me representing Victoria) but I was never racially verified from that day on.

So if he didn't mention it what would you say?

Nothing.

I'd prefer if all footy 'journalists' stuck to writing about footy, to be honest. Call me old fashioned. I hear a young team who had been pencilled in for a bottom-four finish handed out a shellacking to a perennial 'finals contender' on Sunday. Probably a fair bit to be written about the young, emerging midfield which led that charge if any 'journo' wants to put some effort into it.

:thumbsu:

If he feels he has to use his column about football to talk about the incident in question, he can simply note that it was unfortunate, shouldn't happen, bla bla bla. No need to get vitriolic towards a member of the public who has no right or means of reply and, if he has any sense about him whatsoever, already knows he stuffed up bigtime and doesn't need to be reminded about it. Can't see what good getting vitriolic towards the man will do, other than bolster the egos of keyboard warriors like Robbo and a few clowns on bigfooty.

Ripping bloke is young Maj. This may sound a little odd, but the upside for me is he has never encountered this before. Says a lot about the majority of Australia, it's not totally full of clowns obviously.
Hope this is the making of the big fella, needs to continue to develop at the same rate and will hopefully be a very good player for the Roos.

AFL Victoria will ban a spectator from entering VFL games unless he undertakes racial vilification awareness education. The league has arranged with Victoria Police to offer the spectator racial and religious vilification education.

I went to the Crows/Collingwood game last week and sat through the ”Welcome to Country” ceremony before the match…I have sat through and actually delivered many of these ceremonies (acknowledge the traditional owners) myself when delivering papers at conferences and have had no problems whatsoever with them…I actually think they should be delivered at public events as we should acknowledge the traditional owners of the land. Anyway, the other people I was with at the game were pretty silent during the ceremony but once it ended remarked that it wasn’t a ritual that they enjoyed and that it was a complete waste of time. I didn’t reply as it would have started a conversation that would have erupted into something larger and given that the people I was with I hadn’t seen for some years, I wasn’t going to see them again for some time again (maybe never) and I didn’t think I would change their minds.

An argument for another time perhaps but...

I think your wording is quite revealing here - you have "no problem" with the Welcome to Country ceremony, whilst your friends acknowledged it "wasn’t a ritual that they enjoyed". The waste of time bit is harsh but the rest says to me that people don't and can't enjoy this routine, it's awkward and uncomfortable and at best we agree intellectually and compassionately to have "no problem" with it. Which is kind of ambivalent. Or politically expedient. How much better would it be if it was structured in a manner where we could all feel pride and dignity and appreciation and honour. It's not the sentiment or the intention that totally blows chunks with Welcome to Country. It's the way it makes us feel. And that's not great. When I go to a big event, I don't want to feel guilt. I want to feel good. Welcome to Country needs to aim for that.

True..

I want to feel good. Welcome to Country needs to aim for that.
Thats the thing...the Welcome to Country ceremonies are very welcoming...they make the recipients welcome to the land on which they are visiting...of the ceremonies I have attended, they have been serious but a side note has often played a part that attracts a bit of humour...Welcome to Country: opening of the 42nd Australian Parliament

In relation to Big Maj on both the TAC Cup Future Stars and 3AW I thought has was outstanding given he has had little exposure with the media (guess he has been thrust into it)...
I hope that his progression up to AFL ranks goes smoothly...

cheers

Great to see Majak handling this so well.

Thought this was a good quote.
When questioned on AFL Insider about how the club handled the Majak Daw incident:

Brad Scott: "One of the best things that ive noticed about North Melbourne is when things like this happen, I have NEVER experienced a club to rally around their own like North Melbourne people do. Hes really been embraced and hes wrapt with the support he's received and is going about his business as usual."

Chief then went on to compliment the club with their handling of the issue.
