NOW to sometime later in the year (maybe) - Talk about anything

A lot more happened yesterday so I am told and the posting from the club is spot on the mark. Unfortunately some Coldstream people on and off field didn’t cover themselves in any glory and their behaviour wasn’t a good reflection on the club. The game nearly erupted a few times and cool heads prevailed. The league is already investigating and a please explain has been sent to both clubs. Coldstream have had a poor year and many of the troops have become restless which supports the decision of why the well regarded Rogers is leaving.
No incidents at all out at Coldstream yesterday, and Chad Rogers informed the club he was moving on prior to the Warrandyte game.

Its no secret that a Coldstream player was suspended for 5 weeks for a hit on Warrandyte player Tom Grimes, who hasn't played football since that game earlier in the year.

Hasn't been the best few weeks for div 3 football with a Silvan player knocked out behind the play against FTG last weekend also. Video footage of the game malfunctioned that day apparently. A fight then erupted in the crowd with a current FTG father (and former Silvan premiership player) having his shirt ripped off and police attending.

Contrasting outlets for the relegated clubs.

Some real cautionary tales from Upper Gully and Knox who are in freefall. Feel very bad for Upper, the situation with their rooms has been appalling and would’ve made improving any part of the club almost impossible. Knox have sunk like a stone… in 2018 they were in the top division and in 2024 they’ll be in the fourth tier (and that’s with no relegation in one COVID season).

Lilydale and Doncaster will need a mighty effort to avoid falling further, the divisions are tight and ultra competitive, both have had super uncompetitive seasons and it’s very hard to turn that around, even in the next division down.

Park orchards rose incredibly quickly, maybe too quickly? Don’t know, don’t know much about them.

Croydon has pretty much been the victim of the squeeze, winning 5 games and getting relegated would be a tough pill.

Kudos must go to Oakleigh District who were ridiculously bad last year and have turned it around to play finals this year. Tbf they probably got a bit lucky with the implosion of Glen Waverley and picking up the scraps from that. Still, you have to move and recruit and they did, so well done to them. Shows it can be done. I would applaud the coach, a first time coach and he would appear to have done a mighty job to turn the place around.

In Croydon's case, I reckon a change in strategy for recruiting is needed. Instead of targeting reserves players from Vermont, Norwood and Mooroolbark to play in the seniors, target instead top age up and coming stars from various clubs' under 19's and also established, seasoned senior players (that are after a change of scenery) from preferably highest or second highest division in this league or other leagues. I know they are unable to afford to stock up on ex VFL and AFL players due to lack of revenue required, which is mostly due to council not providing fencing for the ground, which costs the club thousands each season.

5 games won would usually be enough to avoid relegation (Knox were even more hard done by in 2019 and won 6 games and finished last on the ladder), however in this instance the move is justified as the club was two games plus 30% behind 8th placed team. Numerous players going overseas during a season also justifies that the club at the moment probably belongs in a lower division. I will never quit supporting the club, however changes do need to be made, so ensure that once again Croydon can be a strong Eastern league club.

Premier division reserves players are often fool's gold. Obviously there's some good quality fringe players, but you only have to look at the scores to know that Premier reserves is often not good footy at all. I've been told by a few people at Premier clubs over the years that they sometimes even struggle for numbers because they can't keep a stable core of reserves players to fill the team.

Its interesting, seems like when clubs fall they really fall hard. Scoresby, Knox, UFTG, Lilydale look like the next one. See what Doncaster can do in div 1.

On Oakleigh Districts, what they have they really done other than recruited well?

There has been a bit of unrest in Div 3 this year with the points relief given to them, a few examples are coach Pearson in only a 4 point player instead of a 5 point player (Premium Premier Div Player +2), Darcy Grant 3 points instead of 4 (3 clubs in 3 years +1), Connor Cochrane 3 instead of 4 (RU B&F 2022 makes him a premium player +1). All those players that came from St Marys-GWH-Oakleigh should have the extra point added as per the policy but doesnt look like any have.Their points are maxed out, played with 46/46 on the weekend.

As the season has unfolded they have just snuck into finals ahead of Fairpark. The points relief should be given to clubs to help them survive and consolidate, not to get them into finals.

Any truth to the rumours around Doncaster? That they will struggle to field a side at any level in 2024? Seems too early to make that call.

What’s this? Surely not. Depth has been questionable of late but they have 19s this year which is a fair start. Seem to have a bit of support still and schramms too good a ground to sit idle!

Would be a shame for sure. Great club. Though I haven't been down to Schramms in a while now.

Fairly sure the B&F portion of the point system has been scrapped as it was unworkable.

Senior community players are three points, plus one if they come out of a Premier comp. Believe that would make Pearson a 4 pointer.

3 clubs in 3 years should def see you allocated an extra point.

Interesting didn't realise they removed the b&f element. Probably was unworkable but also a bit of a farce that a club could recruit a player from Prem Div that played 10 1s and 8 2s games and be the same points value as Pearson.

I'm lead to believe their source club folding would be the reason for not gaining the extra point.

You'll say that they signed at oakleigh in November/December before GW officially announced they weren't going on, but that club was done in October, which all involved at the club and the league knew.

I’d definitely implement a rule that says no club can sign more than x players from another single club in one season. Say 4 or 5.

It’s called the club sustainability policy, well there isn’t anything that kills more clubs than mass player walkouts, someone gets the shits with the club and leads an exodus of dozens of players to another club. It’s what happened at Glen Waverley. Same thing happened at Mount Waverley (SFL) a few years back when the entire playing list up and moved to Fairpark en masse.

Of course there would be scope for a review in certain circumstances where required. But I’m adamant it would keep more clubs afloat, instead of 20 lemmings playing follow the leader, it might make them stop and think that maybe we could stay and fight it out if this is the only way most of us can play together.

Good in theory bunk however the challenge with this proposal is what if the players have the shits with the committee/board? The committee aren’t necessarily going to move (many are probably old club legends) so the players go en masse…

Or a top premier player (such as Pearson) drops down the grades to coach and takes a bunch of fringe/2s players from said Prem club - massive bonus for the lower club and part of the natural regeneration of the top club. 3/4 Div clubs have been taking Vermont 2s players for years…

Confident the right number would be effective and still fair. Maybe it's 4... 5... 8... I don't know.

As for the first example, not necessarily sure it's a bad thing. A committee might well be to blame, but at least it might result in there being a higher likelihood of people sticking around to fight and resolve the issues. If a committee is really that toxic then I'm confident in most cases the players could gather enough support to get rid of them. Players make up a large percentage of a club's voting members.

Many people including players need to be a bit more invested in their club as a going concern and a historical entity, and look past a few people (such as committee members) who will be gone in a few short years anyway.

Everybody leaving is too often just the easy way out, but the cost to the game - the loss of a club - is too big in the long-term in my opinion. Don't forget this policy wasn't all about just equalisation, it was about sustainability - stopping rogue committees from sending clubs under with financial recklessness.

With a review function for extenuating circumstances.

I have heard a similar rumour in regards to Bayswater, I'm positive both these rumours (Bayswater and Doncaster) are bullshit. At worst and most probably unlikely, Doncaster may request to drop down two divisions, which will mean that Boronia will be promoted (assuming they win the flag in that particular division). Bayswater will also be fine, they fielded three teams every round this season. From what I've been told directly, they struggle to find volunteers for various roles at their club and this is the only issue they have.

Hopefully these rumours are exactly that - rumours and bullshit though never good to hear them. Be interesting to see how finals work this year at baysie if volunteers are the concern
