NSW & QLD pop = 7.5 mill. Melb in final so half of vic watching

Vic Sa WA = 7.5 mill. No NSW or Qld team in final . so i don't think the numbers are such a disappointment.

I watched the NRL because it was 7pm on a sunday. Would not watched it if it was on sat afternoon.

*** think i short changed oz pop by about 5 mill but the percentages are right***

It was a two fold affect this year. Wit sydney being out the of the AFL grand final numbers dropped off 500,000 less sydney viewsers this year and such a one sided affair people who are realy into AFL wont keeo watchin a flogging

And then the flip side melbourne storm in the NRL GF thats 500,000 more melb supporters watchin NRL than normal. Good close game until half time and storm broke the game apart in the 2nd half

All depends on which sides are playing.

It was obvious that the Grand Final of NRL was going to outrate the AFL Grand Final.

- NRL Grand Final on at night (nught games always do better than day games).
- NRL was NSW vs Victoria (2 very high populations) while the AFL Grand Final was only Victoria vs South Australia.

Those two facts alone account for the difference it ratings.

I'm not sure where you got your figures from, but the official figures looked something like this....

AFL = Peak audience of 2.88 million
NRL = Peak audience of 2.86 million

AFL = Average audience of 2.5 million
NRL = Average audience of 2.48 million

Slight win to AFL. But keep in mind that it was Saturday afternoon. Not traditionally a high viewing time for TV.

Having Melbourne in the NRL GF had Victorian viewers watching when normally then wouldn't

And if you want to be really pedantic, more attended the MCG game, so this is going to result is less watching.

Its amazing how the NRL couldnt beat the AFL in TV ratings for grandfinals since they have everything in their advantage. NRL must be spewing. They'll need to prop the Storm up to make sure they win a few more premierships just to stay close.

Tortured numbers board.

Why do the rugby people keep insisting on coming over here and telling us that their English game with the American-themed teams is better than the Aussie one, when it is obviously not and we are never ever going to agree with them?

The coverage in Sydney has been pathetic. Watching the Sydney news broadcasters trying to make NRL look really popular in Victoria are so far off the truth its not funny.

I hate this rating bullshit many other leaguies come up with, i dont think it means much when we get consistently shite crowds week by week in the regular season.

Number of factors.

AFL is played on a Saturday afternoon.

NRL is played Prime Time Sunday evening.

On a Saturday afternoon many people come together and watch this game at one location. These figures are not taken into account. The number of licenced venues taking the telecast are not taken into account. What were the number in Sydney for the respective Grand Finals? There is where a massive amount of the difference lies.

You can just picture all the Thugby deadbeats huddling around their TV sets/computers/whatever gives them the ratings figures with their eyes closed and fingers crossed, waiting for the figures, saying 'please, please! PLEASE give us something to hold on to!'

Ratings counts what? Number of TV sets tuned to the footy? If so that'll skew the results big time.

Everyone gets together to watch the Footy on a big screen at a pub or a barbie. I don't know a single person who watched the game alone: everyone was happily crowded around with a bunch of family and friends, except the poor sods who had to work.

The Rugby league was on in the evening, anyone channel surfing at the end of the day is goinmg to catch a glimpse of the bumsniffers at work.

Do you mean like how the AFL gave the Swans and Lions advantages to the detriment of all the other teams?

Bottom line is that the Swans making the AFL GF was a high water mark which will be hard to emulate unless the Swans make the big game every year.

put them up head to head and see how it tracks....

AFL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NRL

I like your idea. So how do you suggest the AFL help the Swans make next years Grand Final? :D

The REAL issue is membership :

AFL 500,000

NRL 50,000

i would rather steer clear of these sorts of threads, but thought compelled to correct you here.

the sources of funding for afl and nrl clubs vary. rugby league rely on grants from leagues clubs. there has never been a great push for memebership of the football clubs as there is in the afl.
