AFL beats NRL in grand final TV audience count

4:15 PM Thu 08 October, 2009

THE LEAGUE has confirmed that the national television audience for the 2009 Toyota AFL Grand Final between Geelong and St Kilda was 3,848,813.

The figure, which includes five mainland capital cities plus regional Australia, is 311,200 clear of the viewership of the NRL grand final.

A total of 3,537,613 tuned in for last Sunday's clash between the Melbourne Storm and Parramatta Eels.

Record numbers of fans also flocked to the Toyota AFL Finals Series matches, with 615,283 patrons attending the nine games in September.

Anyway, I was really happy with the nrl ratings, especially in Melbourne.
I'm sure Beaussie, Hoops and the Red BackSpider are thrilled with the results!

LoL. Indeed.

Melbourne has shown, without a shadow of a doubt, that they want Rugby league on the tele at a decent hour. Lets at least start with our home team.

Rugby league journalist admits the truth and publishes a retraction on behalf of Roy Masters in the SMH. :D

"The NRL's belief strong grand-final ratings last weekend would help their next TV deal was punctured slightly with the revelation yesterday the AFL's decider had in fact beaten its rugby league counterpart in national ratings, not the reverse as had been claimed originally. Recalibrated figures lifted the AFL's ratings by almost 400,000 nationally."

We await the Daily Telegraph to do the same.

For the record: I'm sure all NRL fans acknowledge that when the Swans were in the AFL Grand Final a significant boost was gained - its called bandwagon and we all know what happens after that ;)

Bitter are we?

NSW/QLD Regional Areas - FOUR MILLION
SA/WA Regional Areas - Approx Five hundred thousand

Now say with me, NSW/QLD Regionals are EIGHT times the size of SA/WA.

Lets put it slightly differently, there are about the same amount of people in regional NSW/QLD and in SA and WA in TOTAL.

Now, why do you think that NRL fans are insistent on Regional figures? The AFL beat the NRL in metro ratings (just :) - However in the Regional Areas FAR MORE watched the NRL than AFL

Really?

Err nope. Combined regional population of WA and SA is 1.2M.

further, read the SMH today about the national result of 3.8m for the AFL GF.

And when exactly is Ch 9 planning to telecast rugby league at a decent hour in Melbourne, on Friday night up against the AFL?? - you are dreaming.

Two swallows dont make a summer - the Storm were in finals with no competition. It demonstrates a level of parochialism in Melbourne nothing more.

Next you'll beleive RL is bigger than AFL footy in Melbourne.

Nearly 1,000,000 watched the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final in Melbourne, I guess we are all Rugby fanatics aswell

Well, we have to dream because it's clear Nine in Melbourne are hell bent on doing nothing to promote the game here.

As it is AFL smashes all and sundry on a friday night, so why not put Rugby league on at say, 9.30?

LoL

And yet people will tell you over and over again that, noone cares and noone will watch Rugby leaguein Melbourne. You guys need to make up your mind what your story is.

That would be a completely stupid and childish thing to say.

the swans arent up against any nrl games on tv in sydney on saturday nights or afternoons(which is when they are usually on) yet they still struggle to get past 100k sometimes.

I dont think anyone doubts the afl would smash the storm in the ratings in melbourne but surely they could put it at a better time than 12am or whatever ridiculous time its on down there.

Focusing on the Storm certainly takes the focus away from the poor Sydney & Brisbane AFL grand final ratings which is what they should be really worried about.

Not surprised with that result, given its only played once every 4 years.
Just remember one thing, Victorians love their sport, no matter what code.
Not everyone here in Victoria just follows afl.

Scotty,

this is my opinion (cut and paste from elsewhere on Bigfooty)

"The core value in the AFL TV rights is not Sydney/Brisbane it is Melbourne.

Melb is used to watching a 3 hour game and regularly attracts 500K average viewers for a delayed telecast on Friday Night. the NRL gets between 350-400K for a 2 hour live game in Sydney.

The value difference between the TV audience of Melb-AFL and Sydney-NRL is sizeable.

Both Sydney and Brisbane AFL ratings will fluctuate based on on-field success, they have climbed the mountain (premierships) rode the bandwagon for awhile and then dropped off. Brisbane ratings improved markedly this year as the teams fortunes started to rise again.

The Swans are still in decline and have not yet re-built confidence that if you watch them you will get a winning experience, they have almost been over exposed in Sydney on TV.

Ironicially, Storm benefit from being under exposed in melb, thus most times Melbournians watch them they win, that can't last forever. in fact if Melbournians had watched some of the lacklustre Storm performances this year it might have turned a few off.

However, Storm still has some legs to run before it reaches saturation in Melbourne and as soon as its starts to lose the viewers will switch off in a similar fashion to the Swans. They're not dyed in the wool fans but success fans.

This is why IMO a two team market is next stage for the AFL, the Swans brand has matured and is now declining, a new team offers a chance for a new kid on the block to rise up and grow its own bandwagon plus having one AFL game per week in Sydney."

Its just an opinion, but remember when the Swans were in the AFL Grand Final, the ratings hit 900,000 and 765,000 for 2005 & 2006.

blah blah blah..

btw i love how you whinge about RL people here, when you goto the roar site and post of RL stories

Bigfooty is for Aussie Rules, other forums are created for interest but all this has done is invite trolls like you onto AFL topics instead of staying on the RL sub-forum.

So I just find your feigned indigination a touch precious.

BTW how many alts do you have?;)

I've always found it funny when a troll calls someone else a troll.

I've said this a million times before. If you post a subject which interests Rugby league people, don't whinge and cry like a little baby when they reply to it.

Obviously you miss the point, Im not talking about the sub-forum for RL I'm talking the rest of Bigfooty which is 95% about Aussie Rules.

Bigfooty is an Aussie Rules forum yet RL trolls like Gost, yourself, others populate non rugby league threads on Bigfooty.

your like communists in the cold war. Some have even gained a rank on the good guys side.

^ At least the Ghost doesn't have agendas like yours, eg. Boycott Storm games, etc. etc etc etc.

Don't make me laugh. Of course he has an agenda he is on Bigfooty to promote RL on AFL threads.

Posters like MelTiger stick to here. So if an AFL fan is interested in RL he can come over for a yack, learn something about the game and move on.

What trolls do is polarise, so they actually decrease interest/turn people against RL.
