Timmy Hargreaves......went out with my sister for a bit in the mid 90's.... played 42 games for 57 goals before heading off to the cats and playing another 20 games.
Actually thought he wasnt bad just way too inconsistent, would play a blinder 1 week and hardly touch it the next.

What of Matthew Robran, was heralded as our new CHF to replace Dermie, maybe played 20 or so games, before we traded him back to Adelaide, love to know how high we took him in the draft.
Another bad trade was Brett O'Farrell, we gave up a first round draft pick if my memory services me correctly, again another player who faded after a season our two.
Def not bad drafting here, Matty robran was a potential star who cracked the sads about not playing finals in 1991, had he hung around a few more yrs we could have been a better side. If anything it was poor management of him by the commitee at the time, dermie was on the way down and robran should have been given more of a chance. Look wat happened when he moved to adelaide, became a good solid player.

Mark Bunn
Matthew Dent
Gordon Fode -St Kilda Reject. Pretty sure he was just a rookie list

Glen Bowyer - Look the goods, got injured pretty badly and I think tried to top himself in Greece. THankfully he failed and went on to play at Carlton for a few games. Seemed like a good guy too

Stephen Jurica - Kicked a few bags for the Tiges early in his career and faded to nothing. CAme to us on the Rookie list.

Leon Higgins and Darren Kappler came from Sydney during our horror 90's years. I thought they would be great, didn't turn out that way.

Sean Ralph-Smith was another. Later went to Stkilda around the same time as Dean Anderson

And finally, Stephen Lawrence. Still remember McAvaney saying during the 91 GF, "You just have a feeling that Lawrence is going to be an imposing player for a lot of years" or something to that extent. Bad Call Bruce. Anyone know what happened with him??

The 90's is a goldmine for obscure players you never think of any more. Richard Taylor, Michael Collica and Brendan Krummel are a few that spring to mind that I'm not sure have been mentioned.

Kris Barlow too, although I thought he was a better player than a lot of the others who've been discussed.

Did some research on Phillip Murton and came up with a Big Footy thread circa October 2001 - this lists a fairly large amount of obscure hawks from the 1990s.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-19401.html

And the Hawks, limited to the 1990s, and to those who actually played a senior game (thereby dismissing luminaries such as Paul Sharkey, Jason Daniltchenko and David Loats):

Backs:

Mark Bunn: While playing for the Roys against us in Round 6 1991, Bunn had five or six goals kicked on him by one D Jarman. I'm not sure why, but the very next time I saw him, he was in a Hawthorn jumper. Not spectacularly bad, just goddamn ordinary.

Todd Ridley: I've got an adage - "If Freo get rid of you, there's something wrong." Not content with getting burnt by Brendan Krummel, the Hawks went for some height and experience in Todd Ridley. Played one game, against Carlton at Princes Park. Got thrashed, back to the twos for you Riddler.

Greg Madigan: The man is an unmitigated legend, and his illustrious career needs no embellishment from me. At least we got Freo back.

Half-backs:

Greg Whittlesea: Got him in the same draft as D Jarman. Whittlesea actually won a Margery Medal before we got him, so I imagine Fudd was suspended that year and was ineligible. Played a few games in 1991 when we had some injuries, but we worked out pretty quick that he was Rick Davies in disguise, and popped him back into the seconds.

Randall Bone: Oh dear. Another tall recruited from elsewhere, this time a Crow. He played a few games in the ruck when Stephen Lawrence wasn't fit, which should tell you enough about where the Boner slotted into the pecking order.

Haydon Kilmartin: A pre-season draft pick nightmare - we could have picked Glen Bowyer, but we selected the Killer, who played four or five games, but got delisted after one year. We replicated the pre-season stupidity this year by picking Matthew Dent ahead of Matty Brewer.

Centres:

Glen Nugent: Made his debut against the Roos wearing 55 in Tucky's 400th game. "Another young star from Berwick" we thought. We thought wrong. Packaged him off to St Kilda quick smart.

Barry Young: Say no more.

Kane Fraser: Had a chest cavity problem - ie. no heart. Great reserves footballer, but never cut it in the ones.

Half-forwards:

Philip Murton: Another flashy blonde, but this one couldn't get the footy. Actually looked alright on a few occasions, but broke his leg badly and was never heard from again.

Tim Allen: Another useless tall imported from a rubbish team. Absolutely pathetic footballer.

Matthew Young: How this bloke is still on St Kilda's list is one of life's great mysteries. Totally lacking in any footballing ability whatsoever.

Forwards:

Shannon Gibson: Yeah, yeah, eight goals in an under-18s Grand Final - did he kick eight goals in his entire AFL career? One in a long line of failed Dunstall understudies.

Simon Minton-Connell: Another useless tall imported from a rubbish club. There's a pattern forming here.

Tim Hargreaves: Oh Hargie, how we loved your chest beating antics with Huddo, back in the dark days of 1997 when the only entertainment we could find was having bets on which of you would dog it first during a game. Aaron Lord may be bad, but he's a damn sight better than you.

Rucks:

Simon Crawshay: To beat a star-studded field containing the likes of Lawrence, Laurence Bingham and Stephen Rode, our ruckman must be the single worst footballer to have ever played the game. Luckily enough, Crawshay fills that bill. I think he played nearly 20 games in the end, a massive indictment on the Peter Knights regime. Completely lacking in every facet of the game.

Darren Baxter: The first in a long line of tagger recruited from other clubs. Jon Hassall was an improvement, Tony Woods an excellent acquisition, and Bazza Young completed the circle of mediocrity.

Justin Crawford: Oh Puddles, we hardly knew ye. And we're grateful.

Some absolute gold there from Mocca, from the days when Bigfooty wasn't such a sh1tfest. Good find RPNT.

Treleven had a good first couple of yrs at the club, his problem was he had no pace and the older he got the worse his decision making got. Had good skills i remember tho.

He was playing well, if not really well, until Mick Martyn charged into his back while he was taking a mark. Treleven hurt his back and never could get back his form.

Have to agree TWITA i played for Carlton Under 19 teens as a youngster it was Zones back then but was more interested in having a few beers Rather than the 5 KM run before we even had a kick determination & commitment to make a AFL list is a bloody achievement in it self!

Who was your coach Noos??

absolutely! it goes without saying that any player to make it to the highest level is damn talented.
Not that i ever saw him play, but Mark Scott is one that comes to mind. I think he was the leading goal kicker in the reserves for a few years - yet unfortunately could never crack the big time

Was Mark Scott one of the 2 players traded overnight to the Saints for Russell Greene?
The other being the somewhat obscure Tony King!

While I'm here I feel the urge to type the words - 'Kingsley Hunter' :)

Brad Lloyd, Robert Handley, Matthew Dennis, Thomas Willday, Todd Ridley and Haydon Kilmartin

Chopper Handley was very unlucky. Burst onto the scene in 85 then got cut down by injuries.

Scott Crow. Played a few games in the early 90's then took off for the Pies.

Was Mark Scott one of the 2 players traded overnight to the Saints for Russell Greene?
yep indeed, you're right Mervyn.
here's what wiki says about him:

Mark Scott (born 24 March 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn, St Kilda and Fitzroy in the VFL during the 1980s.
Although Scott, a full-forward, had a career in the VFL which spanned over a decade he is probably best known for his performances in the reserves. In 168 reserve games he kicked 655 goals, only showing similar goalkicking skills in the seniors at St Kilda. He topped the Saint's goalkicking twice, with 48 goals in 1980 and 45 goals in 1982. He had started the 1980 season with Hawthorn but during the season was traded to St Kilda for Russell Greene.

Who was your coach Noos??
TBH mate i cant remember I'll make a few calls to some mates & will see if there memory isn't as bad as mine it was over 20 years ago i Played for Mt Evelyn Seniors which was a Carlton recruiting zone at the time i used to play against Fraser Brown when playing also Played Seniors for Seville & was Coached by Mick Shaw famously known in my circles for biting a mans ear off....

Glen Bowyer - Look the goods, got injured pretty badly and I think tried to top himself in Greece. THankfully he failed and went on to play at Carlton for a few games. Seemed like a good guy too

Bowyer, thats the one I was looking for. Didn't he try to cut of his arm or leg or something in Greece after a few too many?

And finally, Stephen Lawrence....Anyone know what happened with him??

Ran for Liberal Party preselection in seat of Burwood last year. Don't think he got up. (Jeez the Libs dont attract the same calibre of celebrity candidates do they. Peter Garrett, Justin Madden Vs John Alexander, Stephen Lawrence).

A while ago I posted a team of recent Hawks who never won a flag.

Obviously Rehn Robran Salmon. Jarman. Barnard, Scott, and the little guy from Norf can be excluded because they won one elsewhere.

It was a fair team who'd possibly get to a prelim or grand final in the right year if they all fired at once.

Oh wait, 2001

But the team was something like:

Lord Barker Dixon
xxx Holland xxx
xxx Harford Graham
xxx Rawlings Lekkas
McCabe Hay Tallis
Thompson R.Taylor Woods

Great thread..he was 24 before Peter Knights..could go on for ever..Len Petch, Lou Milner (Tucky's mate 99 reserve games and only one in the seniors. Jeff Murray, best right hook on Barry Norsworthy in his first game, got 4 weeks but Norsworthy out for 8 with a broken jaw, Jeff said he won that by 4 weeks. Rudy Gilham, Ron Beattie, Mark Turner, Glen Harrison, (Dr) Nick Wilton, Peter Bennett, Dr Peter Sherwin. The Cooke brothers............. I could keep going, I will. Robert Polkinghorne, Geoff Smith, Robbie Mace, Paul Considine, Mike Zemski, Clinton Browning, Scotty Wade, Russel Shields, Kim Kershaw, Lou Pepe, Richard Walter.......

Pete Sherwin... helluva nice guy.... has been the lanky communications guy on the bench now since the Judge years.... u will see him holding the board up at all our huddles... hes also the one that walks like herman munster now after a back injury a year or so ago :)
