Unless it's formally announced, he's still on the board, as with any other pick in the draft, or that fall through to the rookie draft.
For me personally it’s not just the realism of it, every man and their dog knows he is going to the crows in the real thing but the rookie draft was made as a good chance to see some lesser less established names get looked at. Well atleast I thought that was Chris25 intention

Yeah I personally don't care if recycled players get picked, but for me it's about getting names out there who might be drafted, more so than players we know their fate. I have a few more names on my list I think are worthy of discussion (even if they don't get picked).

Any time you're making a pick, you want the highest probability of an AFL career with your selection. Otherwise you're doing the wrong thing by the club you're selecting for.

Hately of course was not available in the national draft because he's electing to join the PSD, where Adelaide then have the opportunity to pick him - which then becomes the rookie draft if he's not selected there and then.

Junior talent isn't the only talent that exists or should be of AFL relevance during the draft process. Mature agers are viable, and this year the delisted free agent market is historically great. When you've got a shallow draft pool including an unusually poor class of mature age prospects available, I can't speak for others, but I'd be looking towards value, and that's those delisted guys if they're not re-rookied prior to the start of the draft, are those guys I'm seeing this year, at this point in the draft as that best opportunity.

I don't disagree with your premise, mature-age talent is important and I was considering James Rowe as example.

The problem with Hately is in the PM, Chris25 literally said "And in case someone tries a sneaky Jackson Hately pick, he's not available. "

I think the distinction also has to be made between truly delisted players and those who have commitments to be re-listed.

Obviously any team can pick these guys up first or potentially convince them to sign a senior list contract as a DFA. But teams don’t generally steal players because it’ll come back to haunt them in the future.

In the national draft that would be correct, as per my previous comment, no one could take him in the national draft as he wouldn't be part of that pool to select from. He isn't entering the national draft, because he knows if he just enters the PSD that Adelaide will select him #1, and he gets to where he wants to go.

There is however no acknowledgement in this draft thread that Adelaide have indeed chosen to take Jackson Hately either in the PSD or rookie draft. If that is the intent, and it sounds like Thunderstruck would like Hately to Adelaide, then I would encourage that to be updated accordingly in the OP.

Great effort all.

So will ND go as deep as 67 picks? Will clubs pass to keep a list spot available either to take an extra rookie list player or perhaps for mid-season drafts next year?

Clubs could invite a few to train to try them out.

I’d say we had about 10-15 more picks than there will be in the real thing. Combination of teams going in with smaller list sizes and saving a spot for later signing periods.

I doubt very much the ND goes over 60 picks, and yes most if not all clubs will leave a spot open given the multiple Opportunities start of season and during season to get someone if needed. Lots of players will be training at clubs over summer in hope of gaining spot.

This isn't the actual draft, you are aware of that right?

Wait, do you mean I can't announce I had coaxed Gazza out of retirement?
I'm not here to ruin any parties, so I'll allow it for now, but as soon as Eddie picks up wind of it we're gonna have to call it off

Don't worry he's on a nine-year heavily back-ended contract. Nothing should go wrong.

Even factoring in list cuts and players with a commitment to be re-rookied, there are still more than 100 vacant spots at the moment.

Sydney Summary
Sydney Draft Wrap up

Pick #4 - Logan Mcdonald
Pick #7 - Braeden Campbell
Pick #42 - Shannon Neale
Pick #60 - James Borlase

Rookie Pick #4 - Dominic Bedendo

Really successful draft for the swans managing to fill some major list needs. Sydney have finally got a key forward and ruckman for the future, got their gun academy prospect Campbell and managed to add some depth to their key position stocks with Borlase. Rookie player bedendo will take some development before he is ready to play but his athletic profile is quite exciting, with the future of Elijah Taylor questionable another dynamic medium forward would definitely add some spark to the sydney forward group.

Rookie Pick 16: Port Adelaide – Matt Allison
Rookie Pick 17: Geelong – Patrick Walker
Patrick Walker is the highest available player on my draft board, so I'll take him.

Rookie Pick 17: Patrick Walker (General Defence/Tasmania) (Height: 187cm, Weight: 76kg)

I couldn't go a whole draft without picking a Tasmanian boy could I? Patrick Walker is the best available player on my draft board and someone who can potentially fit well into Geelong's lineup. He's a utility in the sense that you could play him anywhere from half back, to the wing to half forward and develop in any of those areas. The main highlight of his game is his skill and decision making, which means he's one of the players that you can trust with the ball at all times. In the long term he can probably develop into an outside midfielder, but for now his work off half back over the past 2 years has been what's impressed me the most. He's still a player that needs to find consistency and work on his inside game, but given the tools he already has to work with, he's too good to pass up, especially in the rookie draft

Bring us home Smythe

Rookie Pick 18: Richmond – Campbell Edwardes

With Richmonds rookie pick, and 3 of my top choices gone, several still worth a shot but unfortunately I cannot accommodate them.
With our list now choc full of mid to small size mid, fwd, running def, I am going to give a rookie spot to Campbell Edwardes as a developing tall def/utility.

Campbell Edwardes
Height 196cm
Weight 81kg
Current Team : Calder Cannons
Birthday - October 7, 2002
POSITION: Tall Utility
DRAFT ANALYSIS: “Edwardes is a tall utility with clean hands and skills, who suits the modern game in his ability to play just about anywhere.” – Michael Alvaro (AFL Draft Central)
